    Synthetic Oil

I never looked at it till it quit. So I cannot elaborate on exactly what happened. What I do know is that she is a person who doesn't miss scheduled maintenance. Most of the times she will get her car serviced a bit before what is required. I agree with you that there were probably some signs, yet the Ford dealership did nothing in advance. Hence, this is why I work on my own cars. They are lousy, unprofessional, lack mechanical knowledge, etc.. [Note: I know there are great mechanics who may work for Ford. I just haven't ran across any. ] That is why after her experience she vowed to "Never buy a Ford again." We believe that they knew the engine had issues and never fixed it. If the dealer fixed prior issues before hand, the car would have probably lasted much longer. I am not sure what Ford's policy is, but the people at our service department only do the bare minimum. See what you are failing to see is that I never stated that it was "a perfectly running car that showed no signs of engine failure." Nevertheless, you can take my aunt's experience for what its worth. If you feel its "dubious at best" then move on. Maybe we just had bad luck or maybe Ford houses crooked employees. I am sure I am not the first person who has expressed concern about the quality of the service which is performed at the dealership. Also note that I am not trying to deter anyone from buying a Ford at all. Even though, my aunt had a bad experience, I still bought the Edge, because I will be the one who services it. Hope this helps :shades:
  2. It should fit. Your main concern is the height. Measure the height of the TV and the Height of you Edge's cargo space. If you have clearance, then you should be fine. Also FYI do not lay the TV flat or on the side. Its best to transport LCD and Plasma vertically.
  3. try using wd40/goo be gone and a clean cloth. Note be careful with the WD40 [if thats what you decide to use] so that you do not get it on the Rotors and Brakes. We still have goo on ours as well, just haven't taken the initiative to get it off
  4. Excellent work/write up Lex Talionis. Very clean and very professionally installed. I do not think anyone could ask for a better setup/install. :hyper:
  5. Ok figured out how to access to additional accounts. Akirby suggestion was correct and help me find more answers. Basically we would need to register the VIN number with a different email/password and then when you finish the registration process it will give you the fees for Sync Services [Traffic, Navigation, Information, etc...] Its $60 for 12 months. So, yes it sound like Ford is going to OnStar route. Thank Akirby for your suggestion.
  6. Just to be clear.... I do not have the touch screen navigation, just the regular 6 disc/mp3 stereo. However, with Sync ver. 3.1 [our car came with 3.01 installed] there are more features to sync. Its called Sync Services. Basically you press the sync button and say services. It will dial into sync services and then you can say something like directions, traffic, etc.. and it will download the info the the car and then hag up so that you can use you phone if needed to make calls etc... If I find out how to get access to more account I will let you all know. :stats:
  7. To my understanding Sync in itself is free. Sync Services [weather, traffic, directions, sports, news, & business search] is free for 36 months. After that its a fee & I do not know how much the fee will be.
  8. Like you said its not the right thread. However, you have very good points. Yet, we all have our opinions and what interest me or you may not be of interest to others. All I am stating is that I would love for Ford, GM, Chrysler to strive. The reason a majority of US consumers are buying Imports is because of the small details. When paying $40,000 + for a vehicle, we expect to get higher quality. Such as the wheels, or memory seats. etc... Once again, my wife and I like our Edge. I'm just pointing out that there are areas of disappointment, which would be nice to see changed in 2011 or later. 1. Memory seats are a joke. They only record the distance from steering wheel/pedals. No lumbar adjustments. It would be nice if it recorded both the distance and the lumbar position. 2. Sync is good but not great. Sync services is a nice feature but you can only have one phone number active. Hence if the car is your wife's and you have it for the day. You cannot utilize sync services such as traffic, directions, etc. unless you log onto syncmyride.com and make your number active or You could also pay an additional fee to activate another line as well. 3. Wheels - at least for the limited it would be nice to offer actual chrome or even polished aluminum as a standard package [even though I rant about the chrome clad, I would have preferred polished aluminum over chrome clad and actual chrome wheels. ] 4. ATM with a sport shifter available for SEL & Limited editions [not a biggie but could definitely help] I have owned Imports before (Lexus, Audi, and BMW) and they do offer nicer amenities. It doesn't mean that they are better, it means that they have managed to get the little things right. Hence, if these things were changed/modified. IMO people would be more inclined to buy the Edge vs Lexus, Audi, BMW, etc... and we can start to pave a road for a very successful future for the BIG 3.
  9. Actually we would need to only buy one subscription since we already have one free fro 36months. I just do not see where I can purchase the extra subscription. Actually now I am considering wether I should buy and install Ford's in-dash Navi system.
  10. We are trying to allow more than one number to have access to sync services. Both our numbers are entered but we can only have one active line at a time. According to syncmyride.com, I can purchase additional services, yet I do not see where I can do this. I would really hate to have to pay additional fees to have more than one line active. I bought the Edge for my wife, so she will be the primary driver, yet, if I need it I would like to have access to sync services with out having to go online and changing the active number from hers to mine. Any Insight????
  11. bbf2530, You give great explanations. Thank You! :shades:
  12. Fantastic! Glad it worked out! :hyper:
  13. Actually I never say the wheels till I got home. At the dealer they were covered in a semi transparent film. I could see the color was chrome but not wether the wheels were plastic or not. Whats wrong with the Plastic cover: 1) Cheap quality/poor design 2) Many state that they will start to discolor, flake off, etc... hence not durable 3) If there is a scratch or any damage to the plastic you cannot re-polish it out 4) If there is a crack or major damage you will have to replace the entire wheel along with the plastic veneer. Hence very expensive. You cannot fix or remanufacture to wheel to correct the bent wheel 5) Hear of the plastic making a clicking noise, etc. As far as chrome existing for appearance, that is true, but the plastic cover does not look like real chrome. [they are very close but doesn't have a real metal look] There are no benefits to having the plastic veneered wheels, b/c the core wheel [alum alloy is expensive] At Marccom, I really like the Edge. I do not base a car solely on the wheels. I just prefer to deal with honest dealers and would like to get parts which are not imitations. We can say that Vinyl seats look like leather so if Ford changes the leather seats to Vinyl, but charges for the price of leather, more people will be upset. However, I did not want to hijack this thread just wanted to make an observation and like you said rant.
  14. Thanks bbf2530, I am aware of that. Currently we have no issues, just wanted to know for future sake, that if the sensor does go off and the pressure is fine/or if I refill to proper specs, would the "Reset" button be all I need? If I am not mistaken our tire shops such as Discount tires and NTB will program the tires when ever they get replaced. Fortunately we will not need to change tires anytime soon considering its a 2010 and I believe the Perilli's are 65,000 thread life.
  15. NOOOO They are still using those cheep "Chrome Clad" wheels :stop: At least for me that cheapens a perfectly good car. IMO either leave the wheels as polished aluminum alloy, put real chrome, or change the label to "plastic chrome clad" as is stated in the parts catalogue. The 1st thing people judge a car on is wether they have quality products. None of the Imports offer this "feature" if it can even be called a feature. Also no tire shop will sell wheels with a plastic veneered wheels. Why does Ford and other domestic makers insists on offering these wheels is beyond me I am aware that some will say this is actually better than chrome wheels or that they are lighter than actual chrome wheels.... Not True. These wheels which come on our vehicle are 34 lbs. for the 20' version where as wheels from TireRack, Discount tire, NTB, etc... are around 31 - 32 lbs. So these wheels are not used to improve on gas, etc... Its like buying a Fake Rolex, Fake Leather Jacket, Fake Ipod, Fake designer Shades, Fake Leather [Vinyl] Seats, fake anything.... Why not offer the real deal The Edge and MKX are great cars and do not need to be cheapened by these wheels. Feature such as veneered wheels will cause some to buy a Lexus, BMW, Audi, etc... I am a bit bitter towards the wheels b/c When we purchased our Edge, we thought that the wheels were actual chrome and even asked how the chrome metal will handle the road salts. Never were we told it is actually a plastic veneer. The answer we got was Ford puts a special protection over their chrome metal which will protect it from the road salts. Guess I should have pealed off the Protective covering which was over the wheels when performing the test drive to see if the wheels were actually metal chrome. Hopefully our Domestic car manufacturers will step up and not give people an excuse to view our cars as cheep, fake, imitations, unreliable, etc.... These are quality cars with not so quality parts [i.e. the wheels]
  16. this may be a bit off topic but is a reset tool necessary? I have an 2010 Limited FWD. If we get a TPMS warning could we just "hit the Setup button first. It will run through a menu. When it gets to Tire Pressure then you hit the reset button real fast" Source --> http://www.fordforum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8939&postcount=3 I looked through our manual but it does not give any instructions on how to reset. It only states to goto the dealer.
  17. Have to agree with akirby! Leasing will get you a new car, but you end up paying more. :stop: Think of it like this..... why do people try to buy/own their houses? If you rent you will never own the property, you cannot improve the appearance, etc.... you are just own the right to that space for a certain period of time. Hence your money is not going towards anything. Same applies for leasing a vehicle. You are basically renting it, hence the word lease. You do not own the car so when you want to upgrade/get a new vehicle the dealer is not buying it back, you are giving it back due to the end of your lease/rental period. It is always better to own a vehicle, house, etc.... It may cost more early on, but later on down the road its yours and you can either pass it on to your child, family member, or loved ones. Sometimes its best to be patient as well and not ac on impulse. Currently [i think the deal ends on 01-15-2010] you can get a new 2010 Ford for $0 down and for 0% for 60 months. All you have to do is make the minimal payments per month and the car is your. Also GM is a-offering something similar but for 72 months. Hope this helps!

    Synthetic Oil

Just trying to learn... Did not mean to wear you out also I found out some good info [at least I think its good ] It seems that the Motorcraft blend is actually on Par with the high priced oils [M1, M1 extended, Valv Syn Power, PP] Thanks for explaining this... I do not want to be one of those consumers who falls blindly to the hype MotorOil Data Sheet.pdf
  19. Great post! Looks interesting!!! Cars and tech.... great combo.... One thing I would like to add is a manual transmission. I know its not a popular addition and I am probably the only one who would want it, but that is what I prefer to drive.

    Synthetic Oil

Thanks flyerjmr33 for the info! At akirby, I believe it to be of lubrication related issues as well as other issues, hence, it was not just one factor. There was minor sludge build up, bad gaskets, scuffs on the pistons, etc... [note she serviced the car at all the appropriate times] Could it be rare... possibly.... could it still happen... possibly That is why I am very interested to see the data which Grey refers to. See my post #45.

    Synthetic Oil

The reason is that some people had their vehicles stop running or inherit major problems after the power train warranty is over. I have an Aunt who had a Ford and her car was serviced by the Ford dealers. Then, 125 miles after the power train warranty expired he engine gave out. She went back to the dealer and guess what..... she would have to come out of pocket to fix the issue. If she had different oil would that have made a difference? I am mainly using the OEM oils and filters just to decrease the risk of giving Ford room to wiggle out of their warranty. Now I know someone could say just take it to the dealer and have them change the oil and that would guarantee that if anything went wrong then its 100% on them. Which is true, but our dealer houses employees untrustworthy and I would like to keep the Edge running past the warranty. Some oils are now claiming to protect up to "300,000 miles guaranteed" which is longer than my 100,000 extended warranty which I bought. So wether they will back it up is to be determined by whomever uses their product. Hope my explanation sheds some light on why, at least concerning why I, considered using different products.

    Synthetic Oil

Can you give a list of oils which "marginally meet the specification" and also did you see the other tests which failed? I am asking because when you say "When asked to demonstrate compliance with the specification, they would show the one test that passed" seems like you only saw the one which passed and not the ones which may have failed, hence there may have been no "fails". I am very interested in seeing the results from the MotorCraft Blend as well as from others which "marginally meet the specification." I am sure other manufactures have the same considerations as For in protecting their engines such as BMW, Lexus, Audi, etc... which btw their engines cost more. Thats not to say that They are right and others are wrong...... In saying that I still believe that a quality Synthetic oil is much better than the MotorCraft Blend. The reason I am sticking with the Blend is b/c I will be changing my oil either before and no later than the 7,500 mi recommendations. I am not trying to be rude or anything, just asking for some data which will back your comments. I am interested in learning and seeing this data. Thanks
  23. We have an 2010 Limited FWD and recently passed the 1000 mark [think we are at 1200 now]. So far no antifreeze smells. If the dealer claims its fine [it probably is but sometimes we have to double check] and If you are mechanically inclined pop the hood and check the hoses make sure they are tight and inspect the cap as Depiry mentioned. Good luck!!!

    Synthetic Oil

Thanks! According to what I have read about the MotorCraft Blend oil [what appears to be from Conoco Trop Artic oil] it seems to be fairly decent oil. I was initially thinking that maybe by getting a full synthetic oil I would further protect the engine even though I am following Ford's OCI recommendations. The oils I was initially thinking of were: 1) PP or 2) Valvoline SynPower However, I am now planning on sticking with Motorcraft Blend & Motorcraft Oil filter and performing changes around 6,250 mi [mid way point b/w 5,000 and 7,500 mi] just to be super safe. This should carry the engine to about 200,00 miles before any major problems.
