Sharing some additional information on battery corrosion. I purchased a used 2009 with 65,000 miles in Sept of 2010. I had paperwork for all the historical work done on it and about a week before I got it, the battery was replaced at a Valvoline shop due to "corrosion" on the battery (hey, how about just cleaning it...). Anyhow, I was happy to have a new battery but noticed the terminals were still quite corroded. I had cleaned them a couple times but still a lot of corrosion. Roll forward to today and 113,000 miles. The car twice had all dash lights come on while driving and then they all eventually went out (check engine, etc.). I suspected the battery was not making good connection. Well today I replaced all the spark plugs and removed the battery to make the job easier and clean it. Wow, it was loaded with corrosion. In addition, I see the Valvoline shop replaced the 650 CCA battery with a 530 CCA one. The hold down in the battery compartment wont even hold it because it is smaller (the constant rattling may have lead to more corrosion?). So I cleaned it and the terminals up real good. Put those red and green disks under the terminals and put grease on the outside to try to prevent it. When I was putting on the negative terminal, the bolt that squeezes the battery clamp broke. Note that our cars have a special new design and you can't simply get a new battery terminal at AutoZone. I had to go to the Ford garage and order one. I am not even sure they have the right one, we had to search on the computer. I will pick it up in a few days when it comes in. I hope it works. So what do I do so I can keep driving it? I took a hose clamp and rigged it around the terminal to "squeeze" it tight. So far it is holding well. Thought I would share everything I found. The constant corrosion lead to the bolt corroding and ultimately breaking when I tried to tighten it. So you may want to spray penetrating oil on them before you need to loosen and tighten them.

Note, I plan on replacing the plugs in my 09 this weekend. I ordered the OEM Ford Motorcaft replacements, delivered to my house from RockAuto, for $24.51. Gives you an idea of the labor cost.

I pulled a spark plug from my 2009 Edge Limited that has 95,000 miles on it. They have never been replaced. The markings on the plug are: MotorcraftPlatinum AYFS22FM with H8 written sideways on it. I measured the gap and it was at .064. The owner's manual says it should be .05 - .057. I have attached a picture of it:

I agree with Railroad. Likely a hose loose or disconnected. Or a loose nut behind the wheel.

What replacement plugs did you use?

Great write-up lowelanxd!

For the AM/FM stations: - Pressing and letting out quickly, takes you to the next preset station - Pressing and holding for a second, and then letting up, makes it scan up or down, depending on what you pressed I don't have Sirius, not sure if the same is true.

OK. I changed the fluid, here is what I found.: I bought two quarts of Valvoline 80W90 gear oil. $4.99 a quart (that is what the manual says to use on my 2009 Limited AWD). I raised the vehicle up about 4 inches (level). Made it easier to get under. Let me comment on an easy way to do this. Grab a 2x6. Cut 4 3' lengths and 4 2' lengths. Screw the shorter ones on top of one end of the longer ones. Use a saw and taper the ends of each. There you have 4 ramps that are easy to drive up on. Put one in front of each tire. Drive up. Very solid. I then removed the plug using a 3/8" drive socket wrench. I took a small zip tie, bent the end at 90 degrees and stuck it in the hole. Looks to me like it was filled right to the top of the hole. Good news, it will be easy to tell when to stop when I am filling it. I have access to a vacuum sucker thingy. Common at marinas for sucking fluids (oils, etc.) out of places without drain plugs. Took a while (20 minutes) because the oil was so think. The manual says it holds 2.4 pints (2 pints to a quart). I think I got close to a quart out. The vacuum sucker thingy uses clear tubing so I could watch the oil drain. You have to keep pulling out the end of the hose and re-positioned it. Note, the oil looked quite clean. I then snipped off the end of a new quart. I had another chunk of clear tubing. Put it on the new oil. Had my son squeeze the oil while I held the other end it. Note, this is also a lengthy process since the oil is so thick. The easier job is holding the end in the differential, you get tired of squeezing the oil (we switched jobs half way through). You also laugh when the tube comes off the end and fresh oil squirts out. Another reason to buy two quarts. Once it was filled, I cleaned off the plug (note it is magnetic) and re-installed. I have attached a picture of the differential highlighting the drain plug for those that like visuals. Not a terribly tough procedure.

My 2009 has 100K miles on it now. I also plan to start towing a boat that is close to 3,500lbs. I want to change the rear fluid. I read the manual and we are looking at 2.4 pints of 80/90. I have a vacuum device that will "suck" most of the fluid out (I hope). Does anyone know the correct fluid level in the rear diff? Should you fill to overflow? Fill to a half inch below the top, etc. I will measure where it is at once I open it. But I would like to know the "official" level.

My wife uses one in her Fusion. Sits on the floor. Collapses down to something you can quickly throw in the glove if you don't want it there. < $10. It's crush proof (read, if I put my seat back to far, nothing gets hurt). Really works well. The one we got was black. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Attwood-Collapsible-Waste-Basket-Blue-Yellow-Green/16351009

I recently bought a 2009 Limited AWD with 61,000 miles on it. I have recorded 6 different mpg's (on a spreadsheet - wow, were all geeks...). Here they are: 22.2, 20.3, 22.2, 19.0, 21.0, 20.3. Average is 20.7. I am a normal driver but have been driving it a bit lightly to see how good I could do. Note the calculations are based on filling it up at the same gas station. Note the 19.0 recording was when I was out of town and my wife was driving the car. Not as light as I am. Note the computer display in the car always read between 1.0 and 1.4 greater than my calculation. I always reset it when I fill up. Not city but not highway. Back roads where I can go around 55mph with some stops back and forth to work.

Ok, did more searching on the net and found out: 1. My first picture I posted is a good example of a leaking PTU. 2. I don't think my second posting is how you change/check the fluid. A writer someplace else indicated that it is a "pipe" type plug and right above the "Y" in the exhaust. Also found the following on our fourm: "There is a pipe plug in the PTU directly above the "Y" in the exhaust. Removing this plug with a typical 3/8 drive ratchet allows checking the fluid level. Ford suggests taking a Zip-Tie, and bending it at a right angle, and trimming the short leg of the zip tie (after bending) to 1 3/4 inch. With vehicle level (I put it up on 4 ramps for convenience), insert the short leg of the zip tie down the fill hole. Fluid level should be between the bottom of the dipstick (1 3/4" below fill hole) and 1 1/2" below fill hole. On my car, it is overfilled by more than 1/2 inch, and I suspect this can be contributing to seal leakage. Because there is no drain plug, I have to pick up a suction gun to draw the level down. For those that are low on fluid, Ford recommends their synthetic 75w-140 gear lube (for topping it off, or replacing fluid). " Also found the attached TSB: PTU_TSB.pdf

I have a 2009 Limited AWD with 63K miles on it. I looked under it and I see what I think is the PTU leaking. Can anyone confirm if the first picture is a leaking PTU and if the second picture shows the bolts to remove to drain and fill it?

These are brand new from an 09 Edge and have not even been taken out of their plastic wrap. I can email you pictures. Shipping is free in the continental US. This includes the two mats for the front seats and two mats for the rear seats.

My 2009 AWD is ready to have its fluids changed (PTU & differential). Does anyone have pictures of those components underneath that shows which bolt/drain plug is removed?

I just bought a used 09 Limited with AWD. Drove it on the highway for 120 miles and the display reported 26.3. Now I also have an 09 fusion with the same gauge, it usually reports 1 to 1.3 mpg high. My guess is I was getting around 25 plus or minus .5.

Looking at buying a used 09 limited that has the navigation DVD system. I have not seen it yet. Those that have it, what do you think about it? - Can you see it okay? - How does it work to other navigation systems you have seen/used? - I read the manual, can you vocalize an address and it will map to it (manual seems to indicate that)? I am pretty excited about this option, but want to know what other opinions are.

I'm looking at buying a used 2009 in the next 3 - 4 months. I want to get a feel for what type of deals people are getting. If you have bought a used 2009, can you reply to this with the following 5 items: 1. Price paid (does that include taxes and what are taxes in your state). 2. What model and special options (AWD, SE, SEL, etc.) 3. Mileage 4. What state do you live in. 5. Was your price impact by any trade in carry over. Thanks!
