Thoughts on this offer for a 2013 Sport?

Recommended Posts

Hi all:First timer here!

I'm in the market for a "mini" SUV and the Edge Sport is where I'm at.

I have an offer for a Sport that has as follows:

AWD

Driver Entry

Vision package

Panoramic

All weather mats

Back spoiler

Navigation with MFT

MSRP (with dest): $44.020

Dealer offer: $37,000 (plus dest, processing fee, T/T/T)

This was their very first offer when I asked for a quote. I was planning to go in and offer them:

$36.5k (which includes destination, but does not include processing, T/T/T) and I'll offer to purchase about $1k worth of premium care stuff from their dealership

Thoughts on my approach?

LAstly, am I better off giving them my offer over the internet or in person on a friday afternoon?

TIA!

Do you have a brochure coupon? Its worth $750. If you request a few brochures through the internet site, (doesn't matter what for i.e mustang, Edge, Focus) then you can also use that as cash off. Search some posts regarding the $750 and youll see how most people were successful in getting them. Price seems fair. MAke sure you read all the promotional stuff for cash back. You can also try services like autobytel and Costco. Maybe its worth some extra $$$

do you know if you work for a company that qualifies for the x plan pricing? also find out if the dealer is including and what rebates they are including to get you that 7k discount

heres a list of the companies that qualify for x plan

when I built the same model youre looking at (not sure if youre picking a color that has extra charge) the x plan price after destination before any rebates or discounts is $41422, if that helps

That puts dealer invoice around $41K so $37K is another $4k off. You need to find out which incentives the dealer is including. If the incentives are only $3K or $4K then that's a pretty good price. If the incentives are $5K it's not a good price. And you need to make sure the dealer is quoting you incentives that you qualify for and not assuming that you get ALL available incentives because you probably don't.

Actual dealer invoice minus factory rebates is typically the lowest price you can reasonably expect to pay. This only leaves the dealer with a few hundred profit after paying the salesman and interest on the floor plan. Anything below that is usually too good to be true or there is manipulation going on with the trade-in.

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered the brochure. It might not matter in the end since I'm planning to buy this weekend. If they try and haggle me on price, I'll give them the ol "brochure is in the mail for a coupon", etc.

Even if you don't have the physical coupon yet, they should be able to look up the code in their system if one has been issued to you.

According to them they are offering $3000 worth of factory rebates.

So that basically means is that my offer should be what their invoice cost is for the options minus the factory rebates?

Not necessarily. You need to understand what the vehicle actually costs the dealer. In this case the dealer invoice is roughly $41K minus $3K rebates = $38K. At $38K they're still making about $1K from the holdback. At $37K they're not making a dime. So you have to ask yourself - why would they essentially give away a vehicle for free? It happens but I'd be skeptical.

The other possibility is you're actually qualified for more than $3K and they're keeping that without telling you. You can check this at another dealer to be safe. The incentives will be the same.

All that said, if the incentives are accurate and they're willing to sell it for $37K then that's a really good price. However, you need to beware of the processing fee (or doc/documentation fee). That's nothing but additional profit for the dealer and it can be as high as $700. Whatever it is just remember that it's additional profit so add it to the vehicle price when you're comparing.

I've gotten quotes from other dealers and they are comparable, but all a few hundred higher than this quote for virtually the same vehicle.

I was surprised at how quickly they sent me the rebate amounts back. My suspicion is that there is some other kind of rebate that's not really called a "rebate", but they hold back from disclosing it if you don't ask the right question. Maybe I'm a cynic. But, judging by how quickly they offered me an internet price of $37k, I suspect they can go down lower.

I feel comfortable offering 36.5k (including destination fee), and I'll offer to pay the processing fee (assuming it's $200-300) and I'll buy some dealer specific maintenance which is pure profit for them.

Thanks for the feedback.
