Bob Estey
I just joined this forum. I purchased a 2012 Ford Edge in October 2011. I purchased the Ecoboost limited FWD with all the goodies. We really like most everything about the vehicle. We are really disappointed with the gas milage though. The vehicle had 276 miles on it when we bought it. It now has close to 3900 miles. City mpg started at around 16 and that was the best we could get. It will now get around 21. I drive easy and try to hold rpm around 2000 until I get to speed in town. Highway milage started at around 24 - 26 and is now around 22 or 23. On the freeways I always use the cruise control. The highway mpg is worriesome, as it looks like I'm going backwards. I looked in the owners manuel and it says that the computer studies your driving habits and will adjust the vehicles mechanicals to provide optiomized fuel economy. This takes from 3000 to 5000 miles. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm also open to suggestions on how to improve the fuel economy. Jamer20120
Its still too early for me! I just bought mine two weeks ago but I can get a sense for where my mpg's is going. Once I drove about 50 miles and lost 1/4 tank I knew that something was up. Initially it shows 370 miles on a fill up but never goes above 22 mpg. I don't think I have ever seen 24-26. In fact I know that I haven't. Started and has been stuck on 22-22.9. For me personally, I think it is due to my constant stops and starts.I have been randomly visiting this group for more ideas myself.
Bob Estey
Jamer, I experienced the same thing when I first got mine. 16.5 around town, in stop n go, was the best I could muster for the first 1500 miles. I drive it easy and try to stay around or under 2000 rpm (I like driving by tach). Your milage around town is about the same as mine. As I stated, the owners manuel says the vehicle takes between 3000 to 5000 miles before you will achieve optimum milage. The freeway milage is my concern. It seems I'm going backwards. I set cruise control at 2000 rpm at 70 and milage went from 26.4 (with 1000 miles on the vehicle) to 22.8 (with 3900 miles on the vehicle). If things don't get better, I'll see what the dealer says when I go in after 5000 miles.
Lloyd Erickson
Bought my Edge EcoBoost on Mar. 23 and only have 335 miles on the odometer so too early to know what kind of gas mileage I get. So far it's short trips, stop and go. Hope to get out on the open road and see how she goes. I do worry about gas mileage as I have looked at the above statements and they are not what I expected. Time will tell. Let's hear more Ford Edge EcoBoost owners reports on gas mileage. I will return here soon to post my results. PS: Notice the exhaust is running rich (Black) Anyone else seeing this? djelaw
We have a 2012 Edge Limited EcoBoost we took home 3/1/12. It has 1400 miles so far and I am getting 22.1 average with 60% highway and 40% city driving. On my last fill up today I checked the trip odometer and it showed 22.8 since the last fill up. That is the best I have seen to date. I have noticed the overall average mileage on the Eco gauge does not change very much at all and hovers within a tenth +/- of 22 mpg. I can get 27-28 mpg at 60 mph, but at highway speeds of 70-75 mph mileage declines rapidly. I get about 23 mpg at those speeds and I have noticed that even a mild head wind (10-12 mph) knocks the mpg way down at any speed. This kind of mileage, in my humble opinion, sucks. I am waiting to see if the engine and transmission computers analyze my "driving habits" and make the proper adjustments to increase the mpg to acceptable levels. I have a feeling that may be a bunch of techno-babble but time will tell. I consider my driving habits as moderate and I have been deliberately trying to be gentle with the accelerator to boost the mpg. I am deffinately driving it "easier" than I ever drove my V-8 Jeep. It wanted to run and I usually allowed it do so. As a point of reference, I traded a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, 4.7L V-8, full time AWD, with 117,000 miles on it for the EcoBoost. The Jeep got 16-18 mpg city and 20-22 highway. It got 18-19 city and 23 highway several years ago before we had to burn corn polluted gas (ethanol). Last October we drove from Orlando to Chicago and back in the Jeep and averaged 21.5 for the entire trip, nearly all (95%) highway driving. I offer this information as comparison with the mileage I am getting from the 2.0L turbo EcoBoost. We are going on our first extended trip soon from Orlando to North Georgia and back. I am waiting, and hoping, that I get significantly better mpg from my new "Eco" car than I did from my "gas hog" V-8 Jeep. At this juncture, I am very concerned that I made a bad decision spending a thousand bucks on an engine that gets 1-2 mpg more than the V-8 that I loved very much. I could have had a new Grand Cherokee for a few thousand bucks more than the Edge. That said, I like everything else about the Edge very much and mileage disappointment aside, I enjoy everything about the new car. The little engine is spunky and quiet and pulls the car along very nicely. This is my first "4 banger" and I must say I am impressed. The Edge rides nicely, handles well, is quiet inside and the gadgets and electronics are useful and fun to use. It is smoother and more quiet than the Jeep and handles slightly better. Now if the little engine that could actually does, I will be O.K. with my attempt to go green.
chuckie1416950267
I have a 2012 purchased begining of April /12, we have 2600KM = approx 1600 miles. We average 33-34 mpg or 8.6L/100km in the metric system. After 60 mph fuel milage will increase as speed increases. we drive mostly around 62 - 65 mph or 100 - 106 kilometers/ hr. We are very satisfied with the Edge, had a faulty coolant hose clamp that at 16psi coolant pressure, it would be noticed by the odor, never saw any dips. I also noticed black at the tail pipe, I was told by the dealer that is common during the break in time , should clean up after 5 - 7000 miles. Bob Estey
Well all, just got back from the dealer after the first oil change. Reported my milage concerns and was told they could do nothing about it as it is running the way it should. I made mention of my black sooty exhaust pipes and they claimed it was normal. This kind of statement from alleged auto mechanics bothers me. They either don't understand the physics of the internal combustion engine or their being told to say that. In any case, I've been thinking about the problem, and yes, I know thats dangerous for me. I remember back in the 80's, I had a trans am with a v8 and it kept dropping a cylinder going up a long hill under load. The dealer I bought it from tore the heads off it and rebuilt them 3 times trying to figure it out. I ran into an old racing buddy that was working at another Pontiac dealership and discussed it with him. He informed me of an O2 sensor in the exhaust header, that when bad, would send a normal signal to the ECM telling the engine that no advance on the timing was necessary, when in fact it was. That would cause excess fuel (and not enough O2) to load the cylinder and foul the plug causing the dropped cylinder. I informed the mechanic working on my car and he said if it did it again during the road test, we'd change the sensor and see. You can guess the result. He changed the sensor and no more dropped cylinder. I mentioned this story because after giving my current problem some thought, I'm begining to think my milage and black soot problems may be due to something similar. If the turbo has a boost sensor that kicks in boost at 2000 rpm, more boost would require more fuel. However, if attendent speed dosen't increase, then increased fuel use would not result in increased distance, resulting in decreased fuel milage. Additionally, black soot would occur due to excess fuel being only partially burned. Cruising around town, I can achieve better milage than its rated for, but I'm under 2000 rpm. I'm just guessing at this point, but what the heck, it's more than ford will do. I'll report back later after I've tried some different driving techniques, and, researched some of the mechanical details. Until later, its good to know that I'm not alone out there. Lloyd Erickson
I have noticed a black "sooty" substance on the both exhaust pipes on my Ford Edge with the 2.0 EcoBoose Engine. I emailed the service manager at Flammer Ford in Spring Hill, FL. and asked what caused this. His answer was as follows: " The substance you have noticed on the exhaust is caused by the percentage of "Ethenol" that is contained in the gasoline. It does not harm anything but just causes the problem you mention." I have noted others who have mentioned this same thing happening to their EcoBoost engines and would like to know if they have got any answers that differ from this. 112235
My 2012 Edge SEL 2.0 ecoboost has 5300 miles. City mpg ranges from 19 to 21 mpg which seems very reasonable but highway mileage is sorely lacking. On a 400 mile drive yesterday (70% freeway at 75 mph--30% rural at 65mph)using cruise control & no a/c, mostly level highway the best indicated was 26.2 & averaged 24.4. I can,t say I'm surprised because at age 76 I've owned many cars & none have ever lived up to mfg's mileage estimate. I have often wondered how mfg's arrive at their mpg estimates. Now for the good stuff. The Edge ranks as one of the finest driving & riding vehicles I have owned.

I just drove from my house in Maryland up into the mountains in Pennslvanyia (and back) and got 27.9 MPG. I had the cruise control locked at 68 and except for going through construction zones and where I had to change interstates. I did have the A/C on. I have noticed that the mileage really goes down after about 70 so 75 may be hurting your mileage. 3 weeks after I go the edge I drove from Maryland to the Mississippi Gulf coast (1090 miles) and got 26 mpg. It would ahve been higher except for the hour each way stuck in stop and go traffic. I set the cruise control within 1 or 2 mph of the speed limit. Also, did you have your windows open? That really increases the drag on the car and can cut mileage.
112235
It was quite chilly so windows were up the entire time. Load was 2 adults. Out west driving 60 to 65 will get you run over. Your comment about 70 to 75 mph I believe is spot on. Whatever mpg I still love the Edge.
bce
I understand about driving out west. A lot of my trip was at 70, I just kept it right there.
djelaw
O.K. - just returned from my GA. trip. Let me start by saying I am more than thoroughly impressed with the way my new 2012 Edge Limited Eco-Boost drives, handles, accelerates, and the comfort and quietness of the cabin. Holy-moly I love driving this car!! We put 1080 miles on this journey and now have a little over 2500 miles total on the odometer. The trip we took is one we have made many times to the same area. I was so comfortable that I had very little fatigue compared to other recent trips. I attributed this to chance on the way up, but I felt just as good on the return trip. It ain't chance, this thing is just a joy to drive. The little 2.0L engine is a marvel. It accelerated on to heavily congested, fast moving Atlanta area expressways effortlessly. We travelled very hilly 2 lane secondary roads with 4 adults on board and the cruise set to 45 mph. It went up the steep hills and down with absolutely no effort. It down shifted going up occassionally but did so smoothly. I had to be looking at the tach to notice a change in RPM. I exited a rest area in south GA. that is in a construction area. There are no merge lanes due to the construction and I had to stop and wait for an opening to enter the thru lane in heavy traffic. I found an opening between two 18 wheelers so I "floored" it and the Edge burned rubber and shot out like my former big V-8. I just looked at my wife and said "Holy crap". Now on to the gas mileage. This being my first FWD 4 banger, I am in unfamiliar territory. I have always (47 years) driven rear or AWD V-8's and a few V-6's. On the trip up, I set the trip 1 odometer to zero when I got on the highway and set the cruise on 77mph. I drove right at 400 miles in this mode and I got 25.8 mpg average. While this is far better than my previous ride, it was a little less than I expected. I suppose at 70 mph I could have done 26-27mpg, but I could also have gotten run over. On the return trip I drove 280 miles on 8.5 gallons from NW of Atlanta to Valdosta averaging 75 mph. Pretty darn good! South of Valdosta I hooked up with a cluster of cars that were moving at, shall we say, a much higher velocity than I normally drive. I decided to hang with them for a while and did so for about 150 miles. At that pace, I was getting 19mpg on the econo-meter. That little excursion knocked the total trip average down significantly and I got 23.6 for the entire round trip. As a point of information, the Edge handles the higher speeds like a sports car. Can't say enough about that. Bottom line, 26-27 mpg is probably the best I can expect under optimal highway conditions at the speed limit. Push it a little harder and the mpg takes a hit. 28-30 mpg is an EPA myth as is most other government issued propoganda. I will accept the lower real world mileage because in every other aspect, Ford has built a very fine automobile. If it continues to deliver the performance and the current or slightly better mpg in the future, I am a satisfied customer.
Bob Estey
Just thought I'd drop a post on milage. Took a 110 mile round trip yesterday. 50% freeway at 70 mph and 50% 2 lane highway at 55 mph. My average was 28.1 mpg. I did some checking on mpg, and, rpm during the various segments of the trip. At the 70 mph speed, the engine is turning 2100 rpm and milage didn't go above 26.2 mpg. At the 55 mph speed, the engine is turning 1600 rpm and milage rose to 28.8 mpg. I also found that the turbo kicks in at 1750 rpm on the little Ecoboost. I do believe I could achieve their claimed 30 mpg on a 2 lane highway. On a normal freeway, I'd be afraid for my life. That being said, I think I'm going to have to learn to live with 26+ mpg on freeways. The flip side of the coin, however, is that I consistently get 22 - 23 mpg in stop and go city driving. I'm sure Ford is aware of all this and we'll see the new and improved version of the little engine that could, in a few short years, actually be doing it. Dawn
We bought a Ford Edge in April and are getting gas mileage as expected. I drive about 50% highway and 50% town and get 26 or 27 mpg. We recently took a trip were we were on windy hilly roads, so we only drove about 58 mph. We got 32.8 mpg on that trip. I have noticed that my edge gets the best mileage at around that speed. We also have the black soot in the exhaust pipes and our Ford dealer said it was nothing. Anyone not having this issue so that I would know this is not normal? OnlySkillz
Bought my Edge Limited Ecoboost in Canada, in the beginning of June - 1.5 months, and 4100 kms later, I am still averaging 18-19.5 mpg (12-13l/100km). Took a long 500km trip with mostly highway driving, and averaged around 25mpg there. I also get the black tailpipes. I don't know, but it is nowhere near what I should be expecting. I am expecting 25mpg mixed driving, and perhaps 30 on the highway. This is conservative and lower than the stated mileage, so hopefully after some more breaking in and first service it starts proving itself. You should see this thread in the normal Edge forum: http://www.fordedgeforum.com/index.php?/topic/10463-crappy-gas-milage-black-tailpipes/ Here, a lot of the people have black tailpipes/soot and get pretty bad gas mileage. Ford is a joke when coming to their mileage, like what the hell are they thinking. I bought a $50K car which boasted fuel economy, yet I'm getting only a little bit better than my BMW 7 Series 4.4L V8.
