Newbie, I do not even have my 2013 Edge SEL yet, dealer audio upgrade?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I just purchased a bone stock 2013 Ford Edge SEL. In fact the dealer still has it installing a factory remote start.

I am a little disappointed to not get a limited with the full factory SONY and subwoofer.

Have people added the factory subwoofer to the stock SEL system with success. I'm asking the dealer right now if they have any audio options before delivering to me.

Any thoughts or help quick would be appreciated.

This is the audio display trim it currently has.

I know it will need an amp. I'm not sure if the 2013 subenclosure have an integrated amp on the box or if the amp is remote located.

Here is an example of a 2010 with amp on the sub. If this is the case. I'd just need to figure out if any of the wiring is pre-existing. Not sure if they use the same harnesses for the SEL and the Limited. Even if they do, the radio in the SEL might not send audio signals to the rear speaker like the limited radio does. I'm just now trying to understand common wiring and components.\

Maybe a less drama question. I have read that the SEL has basically four door speakers. What is the biggest cone I can fit? I think a 6x8 will fit, but that are not super common so people use the 5x7 which fits a 6x8. Is this accurate? Is there a decent priced 6x8 on the market? I have been doing reading, but all the articles are old and I figured there are newer speakers on the market.

Is there only "one" factory subwoofer in 2013 Terrains? I know the "Sony" system that comes in the limited has a sub, but is that the only sub option? So confusing looking around. Trying to understand if the wiring is there or not. I haven't cracked my compartment open on the side yet to see if there are any free harnesses. Even if there are, it does not guarantee the head unit is powering them since there is no Sony head unit in my SEL.

BTW, Crutchfield is less than helpful. You go and put in 2013 Ford Edge SEL, not Sony, no Nav.

And under "Front Speakers" it literally everysize under the sun listed.

From 6 1/2, 5x7, 5 1/4, 3 1/2 and 4x10.

Obviously that is not right.

Worked fine for me. It shows that the 5 1/4, 6 1/2, 5x7, 6x8, 6 3/4 and 4x6 fit the front door but it says the tweeters, midrange speakers, 6x9s, 3 1/2, 4, 4x10 and 5s do not fit.

I guess you are right, I see that now, I wish they just blanked them out completely. Its a bit confusing. But I do see it now.

Why would you choose to not use the 6x8 to get the biggest cone if you do not plan on getting a sub? I understand some with the separate components to feed the high signals to the tweeters. I do mess with home theater a good deal, but when you have no sub in the system, why not attempt to maximize cone area?

I think the materials, construction, sensitivity, etc. are different so a good 5x7 may outperform a so-so 6x8. I assume they make 5x7s in some brands because they fit more vehicles than the 6x8s but not really sure.

In this case I don't think the cone size is going to be a big difference either way.

really just depends on how much you want to do...i didnt have the sony system in my 10 limited but i did have the audiophile system..4 doors 2 tweeters sub and amp...it is now all gone and nothing is factory..i do have a factory sub enclosure but it wont fit in your edge.i believe they switched locations in 13..i personally would not have them put in anything and build your own

not only did my 10 have the amp mounted to the back of the enclosure it also has a DSP which is a seperate box located right next to the factory enclosure..if your set up is the same as mine i have the amp ,factory enclosure and the DSP. but honestly think you are setting the bar a bit low considering you have a blank canvas and your kind of looking to color on it with crayons when you could just get some paint and makje a piece of art...lol you like my artist analogy??

if your up to it i have a write up on a custom fiberglass enclosure i built in the location where the factory sub was. or you can always go buy a stealth box for 9000 dollars? jk they are 750 or something like that..still ridiculous.u can build one for about 200 bucks and a little patience.

My problem is I have a baby due in about a week. My wife would not be thrilled with me spending time and money on a nice JL. I'd love to. But I'm just looking to get the system fairly close to my GMC terrain I traded in with an OEM Pioneer system and factory sub in the back. It sounded decent, but this Edge is just sad. I'd take an 8 inch free air sub just go give me some low end.

Totally understand that sir:-). Well if you do decide you want to install a factory enclosure w a 10" I have the driver and enclosure sitting here doing nothing

So did you have the Sony setup? I'm confused between the Sony and I've heard of an audiophile system? I know the Sony was door speakers front doors were two ways, tweeters in the pillars and speakers in the back with a sub.

From what I've read the audiophile was 4 upgraded 2-way door speakers and a sub. Where the subs the same between the Sony and audiophile. Do they still sell the audiophile, I did not see it in the 2013 spec bood.

fit1446, what year is yours out of? If it was the Sony I assume it was powered externally from a remote amp? I've seen some of the sub enclosures have a bolted on amp on the back of the enclosure.

What I think I've been reading is the Sony is remotely amped, the audiophile has an amp bolted to it. Not sure if there is an actual difference in the sub and enclosure though.

I did not have Sony I had the audiophile system. Two tweeters in front pillars 2 6x8 in front doors and 2 6x8 in rear doors with an 8" sub behind passenger rear quarter trim with amp secured to the back of enclosure. There is also another component which is the control box for sync and I believe it controlled the factory sound processor as it had the input leads from the head unit and the output leads for the door speakers. The sub woofer leads are a single channel signal from head unit into factory amp which converts the signal to two channels that each go to the dual voice coil factory 8" sub. It sounded ok but the door speakers are paper crap and the driver is also pretty worthless. It is all gone now. I built my own audio system and replaced everything. I think the Sony system was completely different components and also added a few (I think 3 more) speakers. But again .. They are all factory components and are not built to give sound like a quality component is. As far as the enclosure... I know at some point they moved the sub to the driver side.. I'm not sure which year but I think it was '13 I could be wrong though. But if you are just wanting decent sound and if your edge has the spot for the enclosure I have... You don't really have any options other than stealth box from Jl audio which is 700 or so... Or can build your own enclosure as I did or can purchase a factory enclosure from ford or purchase the one I have which already holds a 10" driver.
