Regular versus premium gas for Ecoboost

Recommended Posts

Hi:

I have no expertise about car stuff, so would appreciate advice. The dealer says that regular gas is fine for the Ecoboost engine in the Edge 2016, but many reviews mention that it needs premium gas. Given the price difference, we'd prefer regular, but why does everyone mention premium? Will it hurt the engine to use regular?

Thank you!

If you don't get into the gas very much, regular should be fine. The only caution I would note here is that 87 may not truly be 87, even though the pump says so, due to variables at the gas station itself. Pick a high-volume station, and preferably a top tier gas station for fueling. When in doubt, go to the next higher octane level to provide proper "cushioning" to the engine. Especially true if you have summer & winter gas formulations.

By burning regular gas, the carbon will build up on the back side of the valves quicker. This carbon will eventually break away and damage the turbo blades. Ford does not currently have a process for cleaning the valves. You will want keep the PCV system maintained
