thunder_rob Posted April 13, 2019 Report Share Posted April 13, 2019 Hello Everyone, I own a 2013 Edge SEL AWD with 135 000km that I bought used with 108000km at the local ford dealership about 18 months ago. They told me that the steering rack was changed under a recall. Last week it started leaking power steering fluid, and after taking a look I discovered that the pressure hose was rusted and leaked near the rack. It was missing little fluid, and I drove less than 10km in that situation. I've looked through the following posts and the available videos on Youtube on this subject, and changed the hose. https://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/18265-power-steering-leak/ https://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/7545-power-steering-leak/ https://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/12767-how-to-change-high-pressure-power-steering-line-on-2007-edge/ One mishaps that happened was that I went looking for the banjo bolt torque, at the same time that my helper came to the garage, and completely forgot to torque the banjo bolt before putting in fluid and doing the bleeding process (slowly turning left and right before bump stop). After a couple seconds I realized that it was spilling fluid on the floor, not that much more than a cup or two. I then cleaned the mess and torqued the bolt to 55Nm. Now, after filling and bleeding the system multiple times, twice yesterday, twice today, the pump still makes noise. Mostly when there is a light press on the accelerator, like when turning from a stop sign. Earlier this afternoon, I tried the flush method provided by Mactfordedge on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOCEj3R7KIM ), and I believe that it might have helped slightly, but there is still a problem. The fluid doesn't seem to have any bubbles, the color is great, and the level is right. Do you think that my steering pump needs to be replaced? Thank you very much for your help. However, I don't see any easy way of replacing completely the fluid to make sure that no motomaster oil is still present. I've seen one video of someone disconnecting a return line, but I'm not too sure about doing that. Maybe removing the belt and turning the pump by hand would be less risky. WWWPerfA_ZN0W Posted April 14, 2019 Report Share Posted April 14, 2019 The baster method is just fine, 100% replacement is not needed. IDK the quality of the Motomaster, but it is probably ok. But some fluids ARE better than others, and the Valvoline just might make the difference. I would give it a go. Good idea to check tensioner and belts now that you mention it You don't have enough mileage on your Edge for those items to have a problem, but you never know! I think that I will change the pump since I currently have time, and it's not that expensive on Rockauto. I've ordered a power steering pump and belts(since I'll be taking them off). I'll try to release the brackets to see if they apply restriction on the line. -replace the banjo bolt, new line didn't have a new one -change fluid to synthetic (Valvoline, Castrol) -take an appointment at my local dealer Currently, my most plausible guess would be the new pressure line. With the old one and enough fluid, it wouldn't do any noise. Otherwise, it could be a contamination that got into the system, perhaps the rack itself. thunder_rob Posted February 12, 2020 Author Report Share Posted February 12, 2020 Well the power steering issue disappeared when I changed my edge for a 2019 F-150 3.5 XTR. In the end, the pressure hose was new, the dealer changed the banjo bolt and I did a bleeding and the noise was still there. It might have been the steering rack. Bamaminer Posted February 26, 2020 Report Share Posted February 26, 2020 Ok so we have a 2012 Ford Edge, and after we had the high pressure power steering hose changed, due to leaks under car, the car had a very subtle but irritating whine at low rpms or while turning at a light or stop sign. The whine would get louder as we accelerated. So I searched for the answers and took it back to the shop and the ASE certified mechanics couldn’t tell me what was wrong they started pointing the pump was bad but I didn’t buy that. So in the end I ordered a factor “Motor craft Ford OEM hose” once I replaced it and put “Motor Craft Mercon V” in the power steering system. No more whine! Smooth quite drive now. It might be the cause of all this trouble. It's a shame that you need to buy OEM parts to repair something that is a very common and proven technology.
