Wireless charger interference

Recommended Posts

In case you were wondering, yes a wireless charge cradle this close to the ignition will interfere with PATS on start.

I found it best to cradle the phone after starting the engine going forward.

I plan to move it a bit higher. Not a problem, more of a PSA.

Interesting topic.

I looked up on line and found that the frequency used for Qi chargers is located between about 110 and 205 kHz for the low power Qi chargers up to 5 watts and 80-300 kHz for the medium power Qi chargers.

The PATS transceiver in a Ford vehicle,, broadcasts a 134 kHz signal through the exciter coil of the transceiver that “tickles” the embedded RFID chip in the key and it broadcasts its unique identifier, which is picked up by the reader coil portion of the transceiver antenna.

As you are the first to discover this, we should name this the "Thesavo effect". Seriously, charger manufacturers should be made aware that their car chargers should avoid the PATS frequency of 134 kHz to avoid problems. Great find!
