Chains, snow socks, and my tire recommendation

Hi,

I have a 2018 Ford Edge, with 245/50R20 sized tires.  Just bought Michelin Crossclimate2 AW CUV.  Went through a heavy storm and they did great.  Also the general ride is fine!

For my size tire, the dealer says I can not put on chains, and there is minimal spacing on the front tires.

Has anyone used chains, if so what type?

Has anyone used a snow sock?  If so, what model and any experience?

I can not drive to Yosemite without chains on board.

Thanks

Yup, only low profile S type chains for the 235/60/18 wheel/tire combo, all other sizes are no chains or cables. The 2019 owners manual also states the same, but smallest OEM tires are 245/60/18 so it probably wasn't updated.

I think socks would be fine, never used them, and CA has some very vaguely worded descriptions of what a traction device is, and if an R1, R2, or R3 scenario, and then it can be up to an individual if chains or cables are required or if the sock is sufficient installed or just carried.

Yes and no. Depends on where you go in the part. Here are the requirements for the 4 areas of the park:

R0: Chains must be carried, but they don’t need to be on your tires.

R1: Chains required unless you’ve got snow tires or all-wheel drive.

R2: Chains required unless you’ve got snow tires AND all-wheel drive.

R3: Chains required. No exceptions.

(Best snow tires for your Edge are the Continental VikingContact 7).
