Remote Start - Turn Off "Shut Down On Door Open" Feature

Recommended Posts

Hey all - I've got a 2010 Edge Limited with an OEM 1 Button remote starter. I've found the instructions to turn off the annoying "remote start engine off when doors opened" feature.

I've tested and it works perfect. However through my research I've learned that it'll disable your Ford "MYKey" feature. I don't use it so it's moot to me! I'm not sure of any other repercussions - time will tell.

I've atttached instructions. They are a little confusing if you're not familiar with programming remote starters. I'm not very experienced myself but I was able to muddle through it. I'll try to help as much as I can. I did mess up on my first attempt and my remote starter stopped working - but was eaisily fixed.

The attached "Feature Programing" pdf file is all you need.

Page 1 outlines instructions on how to get into programing and navigating through options

Page 2 outlines programming options - in this case you are concerned with "Option Bank 2 Step 7" for MY KEY vehicles which is what mine is.

Page 3 outlines programming options for non MY KEY vehicles

If your vehicle is a non "MY KEY" vehicle I believe your remote starter should already be working as normal and this write up wouldn't really apply to you.

If your remote starter stops working - you'll need the 2nd pdf file "Program Remote Start"

Whatever you do DO NOT PRESS AND HOLD the start button to execute a command during programming. Just press the button once quickly. If you hold the start button you'll know because the car will chirp 4x's - it'll reprogram your settings back to stock and you'll have to re-program your remote starter. That's what I did wrong and you'll need the 2nd attached pdf to reprogram the remote starter (RMST). Also I did the programming with my door closed. This will all make sense once your read the instructions,... a few times.

To answer the 1st potential question - the "programming/overide button" should be located under the drivers dash if it was installed correctly. I've circled mine in the picture

I hope this is valuble info for some as I absolutely loathe this feature.

End result - your car starter will work as many have become accustomed.

1 Hit remote start

2 Car starts

3 Unlock and Open door (engine does not shut down) get into car and do not hit brake pedal(engine will stop)

4 Insert Key and Turn to on position without cranking

5 Press brake, put 'er to drive and go!

If the brake pedal is depressed without the key in ignition - engine will shut down(safety).

Cheers!

Although I tried this and it worked for me - please do so at your own risk!!! I am not an expert - just a "googler"

Thank you for posting. I was wondering how you exit the programming mode? Do you just open the doors and it exits the programming mode? Thanks again!

Ok, I tried the steps, exactly as described. Close doors, hold brake pedal down, turn ignition to run, press the override button for at least 20 seconds...nothing. Any ideas?

Not too sure - I have the 1 button remote start sytem. Is that the one you have?

Maybe try to enter the programming with the door open see if that works. The document states some cars may be set this way.

I've tried it on a friends edge and it worked. Granted we both have a 2010 model - not sure if that makes and difference.

Yes, mine is the one-button dealer-installed RMST. The odd part is, is that what looks to be the override button is at the very bottom of the instrument panel, below the steering wheel, and it's actually a very small box with a dark blue button in the middle and it has a blue LED, which I noticed comes on when the car is off and the doors locked. The button looks nothing like I've seen, with a long wire and a bulbous end with a black button on it.

When trying to enter programming mode are u hitting the dark blue button or the black one? The long black wire with a boulbous end and black button seems to me the button u should be pushing to enter programming. I know the button I push is black.

I've attached a picture of it for you. I didn't see any other buttons on it.

Sorry for the late reply - just saw your pic. I don't have that located under my steering column - nor am I aware I have that piece altogether. If I do - it's tucked up under my dash. I'm begining to think we have different remote starters.

In doing research about turning off this feature - I remember reading that some dealers could have installed a different car starter unit but still used the Ford 1 button key fob (not sureif this is even possible - I just remember reading it). That might be your scenario. My unit was not "factory" installed but it does behave like the steps that are described in the programming - so I'm left to believe it's an OEM unit.

Sorry I couldn't be of anymore help - I'm not super familiar with different types of car starters - I had just came across the documentation that is used for OEM Ford starters and wanted to share it.

Good luck with trying to turn off that feature - it's really annoying!!!

That's ok. I appreciate your trying to help. I'm going to the dealership for an appointment on Friday to have them reprogram it...and to turn on my DRL's. I'll let you know if they were able to fix it. They say they can.

Ok...went to the dealership Friday, and they reprogrammed the remote start and the daytime running lights - at no charge. So, I'm good to go. Thank you for all your input. I appreciate your taking the time out to respond.

For those who are curious...the dealer was Marshall Ford, in O'Fallon, Missouri.

I actually have a 2012 Ford Focus with MyKey and Intelligent Access. (Single button push start)

In the manual it states "as an added security feature, the engine will shut down when any door/liftgate/hood is opened". I looked but I could not find the program override button, so I took it to the dealer with the printed out instructions you posted. I had them working on it for a few hours, which the called the 3rd party vendor to find out option 7 is no longer available, and the engine shutdown is a security/safety feature. The dealer told me the vendor said there is no way to disable the door sense feature.

The remote start system is PowerCode which is AKA Audiovox. http://audiovoxproducts.com/codealarm/ aka codesystems.com.

I think I wasted $450 on this system. I will call Ford and complain, but its useless to me if its just going to shut the car off.

Thanks again

Mike

Useless? It allows you to start the vehicle from afar and warm up or cool down before you get in it. Just because you need to restart it when you get in doesn't negate the usefulness.

It's an inconvenience for sure but hardly useless.

Wow this was really helpful, it took a while to find the programming/overide button. Mine was tucked in and tiewrappered with a bundle of wires. tried to do the programming without the LED and was that ever a mistake lol. Took a while to find it as well and had to use a mirror to see it while doing the programming. Once I did that I was able to make the switch no problem at all and fix what I had messed up. To answer why one would make this change, it's for two reasons. 1. less wear and tear on the starter motor and two just the convenience factor. Mty Girlfriend always laughed at me that the engine shut off because I opened her door first.

Well thanks again, the internet has proven very usefull once again.

I just got it working (truck stays running on door open) after not needing it for a year; just wanted to use it ,not gain a phd in remoteology.

I swear ford is in cahoots with the starter people since you'll wear yours out 2x as fast.

What I learned : Big difference in programming 2 button vs 6 button vs 6 button with MyKey so if your'e going to program make sure your'e following the right directions.

Not sure why I paid $800 from a Ford dealer for a 'no worries' remote. Ford is really dropping the ball on this one.

Where is the 'Low Temp Autostart' like they have on $99 remotes ?

aaah I see there is a 2 button MyKey one too !

Is this so people called 'Mikey' will identify with this feature and buy one of these ?

Because if I have to limit someones driving how about they don't get into the drivers seat of my $40K+ truck to begin with.

Also it seems year and model specific.

  • 5 weeks later...

well, i've been looking under the dash on my expedition and i can't find it.

i called a tech at the ford dealership, he said if the vehicle is equipped with sync, that it has a different module that goes through the CAN system or something like that, and it does not have a programming button

do any of you that have been successful have sync?

my tech guy at the ford dealership said on "sync" equipped vehicles, their is no button to put the vehicle in programming mode. i have a 2011 expedition that has the extra "single" button in addition to the regular key. does anyone have this same setup, factory 4 button key with the single remote fob, and has sync that has done this.

i cannot find a button anywhere under the dash

Just wanted to say thank you for the info and link to the instructions to do this. My wife has a 2011 Ford Expedition Limited with the single button remote start and it was frustrating her to restart the truck after opening the door. Went to the dealer and the service guys said it couldn't be done, so I did a quick Google search and it brought me here.

Found the button and LED quickly under the dash...

Read the instructions through real quick and after my first attempt it worked like a champ and my wife is happy!
