Potential Future Edge Owner

I'm considering purchasing an Edge in the next 6 mos. or so, as I have a growing family (#2 on the way) and am currently driving an Acura RSX Type-S - not exactly the optimal family car..

As far as I can tell, the Edge is a really nice vehicle but that it comes at a price .. its price point certainly comes in higher than its competition (I'm looking at cars like the Venza for example)..

One of my biggest questions is about mileage.. what's the real-world mileage that people are getting with their Edge's? is the 2011 model a significant bump over prior years? I work from home twice a week typically and commute mostly highway the other three days, putting about 200 miles on the car each week.. so I don't drive crazy miles, but the Edge may become our de facto family car (our other car is a 2009 Subaru Outback)..

Would it be worth it to look at the 2010 model, to see if I can find a used one or a leftover at a reduced cost? is the 2011 model enough of a "refresh" over the 2010?

I am currently getting between 18-20 mpg on winter gas and using a lot of autostart (kills your mileage) with my 11limited AWD. I am expecting that to go up a bit over the next few weeks as we stop going below freezing and autostart isn't used as much.

As far as refresh on the 11 vs 10 - it is a huge refresh. And if you are going to wait 6 month's or so - you might just want to wait for a 12 so that some of the kinks that people have seen with the ford touch systems will hopefully be worked out.

I love my car and very glad I waited for the 11 instead of getting a 10 at a lower price.

thanks Choff.. good to hear that it was a big refresh, that's been my impression as well.. I just wanted to hear it from an owner..

I feel like 18-20mpg is pretty low.. granted I'm coming from a car that gets about 28-30, but still.. is your 18-20 mostly city? I've been reading through some mileage threads that I could dig up and seeing some get really good gas mileage (mid-20s) when they keep their speed in the 65mph range.. most of my driving right now is highway, and I hope not to give up too much in terms of mileage especially with the gas prices rising as they are..

I wonder if the dealer would let me "borrow" the car for a day and see how it goes (the subaru dealer offered that when we bought the outback)..

do the 2010 and earlier model have anything like the Sync system?

The '10's have a different version of sync - not as all encompassing.

I do about 10 miles highway and about 10 miles city on my way to work - same on the way home, plus any driving at lunch time would be all city - and weekend errands - I have not done a road trip that would allow long stretches of highway. Also - It has been winter the whole time I have had it - so take the Alaska factor into considerations. Not sure where you are. (running your car 20 minutes before you leave work for the night really sucks gas, but better than being freezing for the first 20 minutes.)

I also went from a car getting much better milage, (99 ford escort) so it was a bit of a shock - but I knew that going into that I was giving mileage up for room, comfort, and wonderfulness. I love my edge and I am one of the few people that stay on this site that haven't had problems with the mft. Remember to take information on any forum with a grain of salt.

If you dealer won't let you borrow - look at the rental companies and invest in a couple day rental so that you can really try it out.

Winter time driving and cold temps, lots of snow. My Limited's AWD 18 - 19 mixed driving. The few longer trips I've taken I've seen between 22 - 23 mpg. I expect once temps warm up and we move to summer gas I'll see better mileage for all around driving provided I'm not transporting a kayak and add one roof racks.

I am in Canada and do mostly highway driving at 60 to 65 M/H (100K/H- 110K/H) and I get about high 20 MPG in American gallons. Of course this is summer driving on stock tires. Winter driving my mileage is lower, winter tires more like low 20s. As for letting your car idle for any length of time to warm it up is a waste of gas. I have leather with heated seat. I just start the vehicle, turn the heated seats on and drive and in a short time the temp is up warming the rest of the interior. The vehicle warms up quicker by driving it than by idling to get it up to temp. The jury is still out in regards to the 4 cylinder eco boost for better gas mileage? I have a SEL FWD. I stayed away from the AWD because of poorer gas mileage and possible high maintenance cost down the road. A good set of winter tires is all I need.

What part of Canada are you in? I let the car warm up to warm the engine up more than just comfort of me.

I haven't drive my Edge much yet but...

My previous was a Volvo 850 turbo. Awesome car, but heavy.... actually heavier than the Edge with less HP and torque. (They'd probably tie in a race to 1/4mi due to the torque band of the turbo). Anyways, I'm very impressed with the Edge Ti-VCT engine's power and efficiency. I caught myself going 80 and it really felt like 70 or less, I probably averaged 75mph on my 25mi trip home from the dealership (first drive) and returned 20+ mpg. This also included quite a bit of idle time when I was showing off my ride to my cousin.

All in all, I'm super happy about the car including its MPG (I'm sure it will get even better) coupled with the fact that it does this all on 87 octane. (91 required/93 preferred for the turbo)
