Round Plastic Disc on top of dashboard

I just recently acquired a 2007 Edge SE. The previous owner is deceased and, of course, is not available to answer my stupid newbie questions. So here goes... What is the purpose of the disc that sits in the recess on top of my dashboard?

If I had to guess, it sounds like a Garmin or other manufactures Suction Cup plate. They're usually a 3" round black plastic disc, with a adhesive pad on the bottom.

 

 

Give you a place to suction cup your GPS to the dashboard, rather than putting it on the windscreen.

Round disk about 2 inches is used for the suction cup on a Garmin GPS. Used instead of attaching the suction cup to the windshield.

Yeah my Garmin Streetpilot's both have these but I never used them.

I used mine on my last car for 4 or 5 years. They said it would be hard to take off when you traded the car. Not so, just applying a bit of heat to the disk and came off without a trace of glue.
