  1. If.....your car isn't detonating on 87, and if....the CPU isn't pulling too much timing to run 87 because of detonation...(big "if's I know), you should get better ful economy on 87. 87 is more volatile (why it fires early....detonation), and can have more energy content than 91, and therefore can give better fuel economy than premium. That's why the mfg's would prefer to set the car up for 87....if they can make it work. Again a big "if". Turbo charging effectively adds a bunch of boost over and above atmospehric pressure and tends to make fuel fire early. With direct injection and latest engine electronics, this is much better controlled than in the past. In a non turbo car.....87 is a clear winner over premium in a fuel economy contest when vehicle is designed around use of 87.
  2. Somewhere along the way.....3.5 or 3.6.....my phone stopped pairing. I could get it connected manually....usually.....but it would not connect on it's own. I even made sure it wasn't getting another Blue Tooth signal from another phone. Still wouldn't connect itself. I just figured it had something to do with the recent updates. Well....a couple days ago, playing around with my phone, I noticed, under settings, it had a site for "update phone software". I did that....and now phone pairs and connects perfectly. Wonder how many other Sync problems are really phone problems. It's easy to just say a phone isn't compatible with Sync and let it go at that. But sometimes you can easily fix the phone.
  3. I signed up for a "drive safe" program with State Farm for our vehicles....wife's 2012 Limited Edge with NAV and daughters 2012 Honda CRV EX-L with NAV. They monitor miles driven and some of our driving habits from the vehicle health report. I've been told the VHR shows some things to them we don't see on SMR. I have to do a VHR at least once each month to continue with the program. On the Honda, since it doesn't have SMR or anything similar, they sent a reporting device that plugs into the USB port in arm rest that does the reporting. We don't drive these vehicles the national average miles driven and are safe careful drivers, so we get some decent discounts on the car insurance. Chrysler and GM vehicles are in same program with their system. Don't know about BMW and MB. This is reason I asked if we would still have a VHR without the Synch services. I would assume we would still be connected to syncmyride.com.
  4. My only concern is losing the Vehicle health Report. Major auto insurance companies are giving discounts (or increases) based on how you drive the car....miles and how you accelerate and stop, etc. Your driving habits. They do that from the VHR you send to Sync. They see a different report than you one you read on Sync. I use State Farm, and the discounts are greater than a $60 yearly Sync cost. But would rather not even pay that. Just wonder if this is part of Sync services.
  5. If one doesn't renew the service, I know the hands free phone system and 911 will still work, but what about down loads from syncmyride.com and vehicle health reports that the web site send to my insurance company? Is all I lose Sync services? Turn by turn which I sure don't need with NAV, favorites, stuff like that?
  6. Sync can give you turn by turn directions after you register your car. But it's not same as GPS.
  7. For connection after phone is paired....when switching back and forth between drivers....does it matter, or affect connectivity, if phone "auto accept" is yes or no? Have read on here having it set on "no" good for some other issues, but asking about ease of automatic connecting should best setting be "yes" or "no". Or does it matter. Default on my phone seems to be "no". Thanks
  8. Is there any reason why the non favorite phone is hard to get connected? When the favorite phone is not in car. Do most of you make the phone you wish to get connected the favorite when you get into the car? My wife's phone is desiginated the favorite. Mine just shows as a paired device. When she is not in car, and i get in car, have trouble getting my phone to connect.
  9. According to SMY, my 3.6 was done successfully. Couldn't tell much difference for way I use the system. Temp moved to center screen beside time. Or was that done with 3.5 and I just now noticed. Recirculate does not stay on for me when restarting engine (as reported above). Still have phone connecting problem, if two phones paired....even did a master reset and hard reboot of my phone. If one paired, either one, no problem. Connects fast. Just won't switch phone connections when drivers switch (only one person in car). Doesn't seem to matter which is designated favorite. And connection manually is either slow, or won't do it. I give up. Just deleted my phone from list. Don't really think we should be talking and driving anyway. But wife thinks driving time is calling time ....multi tasking she calls it. Us Ford product owners (and shareholders) are doing the heavy lifting for this new in-car technology.
  10. It takes about 600 cu ft per minute of free air flow to make 300 engine HP. A clean stock paper filter (and stock air path) will flow that, and filter better, without oil migration to MAF sensor, than an aftermarket filter. A K&N or some other aftermarket filters will flow a lot more air than a stock filter, but the engine can't use it without some other mods to air intake path, valves, exhaust, tune, etc. It's true you might see a slight HP (2-3) pick up with a new aftermarket filter when stock one gets dirty. You would probably see same HP pick up at WOT with new stock one also. Have come to this conclusion after spending many hours on dyno swapping out parts on various modified V8 Mustangs. Clean stock paper air filters, properly sized, do just fine. And are the best at filtering out dirt. If you use a K&N, better change oil twice as often. CAI kits can flow a lot more air, if engine can use it. Also, depending on where you put MAF sensor, usually all that air will fool cpu into running it a tad leaner (you see this with wide band a/f sensor)....maybe making 6-8 HP. You can achieve same HP gain and a/f with a 92 octane tune and skip the CAI kit. Without some serious mods, and willingness to run 92, it's tough to improve much on a stock tune. And then there is the question of how much performance do you pick up on a 4000 lb vehicle with 6-8 more HP? You pick up that much HP when outside ambient air temps drop 6-8 degrees. My problem with aftermarket CAI kits, on otherise stock engines, that have adequate air intake paths, is it's difficult to know if the HP gains you get is because the CAI leans the A/F slightly. Most vehicles come from factory with a safe slightly rich tune at WOT. So there is a few HP there available with some leaning. I prefer to get those couple HP from a tune....and know what I'm doing. My advice for best stock performance in a stock vehicle.....just replace the stock filter about every 10,000 miles.
  11. Interesting, because I think my phone issues started about the time of the last update. Could be coincidence I suppose....will find out. Thanks.
  12. For about $200....5" portable Garmin with free lifetime map and traffic updates. Voice turn by turn, etc. As long as your device has enough memory to handle new maps, etc. Apparently down loads take more and more memory. Sure....portable not as nice as built in....sun glare issues, etc.....but they work just as good.....maybe better. I've got a Garmin bean bag mount portable....it's nice to get free downloads for POI's about every 3 months, and maps every time a new one is available.
  13. I get offers from Honda.com for $99 to update the GPS on our 2012 Honda CRV. It has a USB port in console. I imagine some Ford parts dept will make some similar offers eventually if we shop around.
  14. Do you pull the NAV chip before installing 3.6. I notice 3.6 is available on SMR, so thought I would down load and install. Sounds like a good idea to do a Master Reset after installation. Had to do that after 3.5 to get my phones paired up.
  15. My only complaint is my cheap basic Samsung phone won't stay paired, especially when my wife's phone is the favorite. It's also difficult to get re paired......unless I take my phone battery out for a few seconds.....then it will almost immediately re connect. Otherwise phone works fine. Wife does not have this issue with her different phone. So I'm thinking I have a phone issue, or phone compatibility issue, not a Sync issue. Or....how do you know? Wonder how many other reported Sync issues are really issues with other equipment? Or involve other equipment Ford has no control over?
  16. There obviously is a new Edge coming, and it might be vastly different from current model. There is no business case for doing research on current model. Another reason I imagine is performance mods for current vehicle w/b slow sellers. Our cars don't make good candidates for performance mods. No matter what you do to them....you can't make them fast. Intake kits, exhaust mods, tuners, etc....don't make much difference on a porky vehicle. They are heavy, with relatively small engines.....for a performance car. Much smarter to make 3.7 and 5.0 parts for a Mustang.
  17. What do you mean by 70% or 80%? Have noticed that on one of our local stations volume on HD-2 is maybe (all the time) 70-80% of HD-1 for some reason. Wonder why that is? Have also seen a AM channel on FM HD-2 or HD-3 which I thought odd. Also interesting. Thanks for your response.
  18. I just make the same bet Ford makes. That over the life of the average vehicle, after the standard warranty expires, repair costs will be less than the selling price of the ESP. And that is after paying a big commission to sales people to sell them. There is a good reason why some financial folks say Ford is just a big finance and insurance company that just happends to assembly vehicles as a sideline.
  19. The function you want to use is recirculate....you set the temp and fan speed or leave on auto. Max works just like you say yours does. Max is recirculate set at lowest temp and highest fan speed. I have a 2012 Honda CRV with fuel saving energy ECON mode, and when that is on, it keeps AC in recirculate mode all the time. Takes less energy (and works better and faster) to cool already cooled dry inside air than outside air. So if it's real hot outside, I always set my Edge to AC, recirculate and auto. Set temp around 73 or so. I never use max....it's too noisy.
  20. Lately been exploring the world of HD radio in local area. With Sirius never paid much attention to HD, but lately discovered we have a huge selection of HD stations with 2-3 different type broadcasts on each frequency. Since I paid for a HD radio figured I needed to learn how it works.....how to tune from HD-1 to HD-2. to HD-3 etc. We don't have anything higher than HD-3 in area. Somewhere read it can go up to 7 stations on a frequency. Pretty good selection music and talk. Really good sound quality. With HD, you either get it, or you don't....around here. Sorry if all of you know all about this....it's kinda new to me. Looking for alternative to pay radio. If I could find financial info, like CNBC or Blumburg on Sirius, HD W/B all I need.
  21. With APIM, Transmission, and engine warrantied for 5 years (it won't be driven 60,000 miles), that covers most of the expensive stuff for 5 years. That's how long I will keep the vehicle.
  22. I believe some of the problem is the stuff hooked up to the car. Was having some phone paring problems after installing 3.5. After reset didn't fix problem, decided it was my phone. So went to he phone store and almost bought another phone, when a sales person there asked me if I had cleaned out my phone's cache? Told him I didn't know what that meant. And how do you do that? He said on my simple phone, just take out the battery for a few seconds. Other phones have a different method. I did as he said, and phone paired right up with both our Edge and our Honda CRV. So it seems it was my equipment, not Fords problem. Yet I had complained about my MFT for a while, even on here. Point is....I bet not all the complaints are legitimate MFT problems. I still have some GPS routing issues at certain locations, but that's probably not Ford's doing.
  23. You re booted the Edge. Have you re booted your phone? IE....take battery out for a few seconds.
  24. As I recall, Ford has extended the warranty to 4 years on the expensive part of repairing the MFT unit on our 2012 Limited Edge with NAV. Wonder what else can go wrong with MFT that's expensive to repair? I can afford to repair the car, that's not my concern. I'm mainly concerned with overall cost of ownership over a 5-6 year period. I'm usually a cash buyer, but leased this one (27 month lease) for 12,000 miles per year after $5000 down, and left the money invested. Investment results on money not spent on this car will almost buy it out of lease. So....in some convoluted way, you might say this car has been mighty cheap to drive. Lease expires in March 2014, and I can buy it for $23,800 and it will have about 24,000 miles on it. So my options are buy it, and drive it a while. Buy it and immediately sell it. Or use the equity built up (if any) and get something else from dealership. And this vehicle looks same as when I drove it home from dealership....garage kept, retiree owned, etc. Perfect condition. I'm inclined to just buy it and drive it a while, it's such a nice vehicle. Just have no confidence in MFT, although my problems with it are mostly just annoying. I understand the system (am not one of those seniors who are confused with tech) . Just wondering what can go wrong with MFT and what it might cost to fix when vehicle is 5-6 years old. I'm not inclined to buy an extended warranty.....unless it is about $1000 or less. Some of you may have same concern.
