  1. Sounds like a worn TQ brace to me. Going into reverse is when you would most notice it. It looks like a rubber brace that may go over the engine, or is attached somewhere. The rubber insert wears out, gets brittle with age, etc. Any Ford dealership should automatically check for this problem. 50,000-60,000 miles is about when you might notice it. The reason I'm not sure is because I can't recall if your vehicle has one. The other 3.5 vehicles, not Edge, I have owned do have them. The normal test is to see if it "clunks" hard when going into reverse. It could be called by some different terms. I believe our vehicles have an engine mounting system. Probably some TQ dampening rubber parts in the engine mount system. A tip to me was when you said shifting to neutral to let engine calm down before shifting to reverse sometimes helps. So sounds like a problem in the engine mounting system to me. With hood up.......watching....when you shift car from dr to reverse....how much does the engine move?
  2. Installed yesterday afternoon. No problems yet. Keep radio presets but had to re pare the phones. Did the install with audio off....don't know if that mattered.
  3. I was going to say the same thing. Recheck wheel nut TQ. Maybe too late, but might help.
  4. Wonder when we'll be able to update our Nav this way? Or purchase new SD Nav chip from lowest competitor? Could that bring update price way down? No need to go to dealership for Nav update. Even though our 2012 has (supposedly) the lastest Nav update.....it's still a little out of date I think.
  5. I've been to Sync my ride and see I have an update available. Question then: Can I purchase a USB drive at Wallmart, or Best Buy....somewhere like that? Down load update to my computer from Sync my ride, then load it thru the USB port in my arm rest? is that how it works? I never do this kind of thing. Thanks.
  6. Although a retired person, I'm not usually one to call for a return to the "good old days". I like built in NAV, although my portable Garmin Nuvi 750 does everything this built in one does. Everything except have a big scren. Love the big screen. We do like the hands free phone use and back up camera. Tech moves us forward. No problem with that. I imagine Ford will get this MFT down pat in a few years, just like all the other automotive advancements of the past. My computers and I Pad have their "quirks" also. And we don't seem to mind or complain. Maybe have to look at vehicle that way these days. I also have a 2012 Honda CR V with voice recognition, phone paring, XM and Nav. it doesn't do as much, but it's simpler and doesn't seem to have any bugs at all. No Sync annual fees either. But it's not near as nice as our Edge in comfort. Wife likes a new car every few years, so imagine we'll be getting another Edge around 2014 or 2015. Maybe bugs gone by then.
  7. Overall we're quite satisfied with our 2012 3.5 FWD Limited Edge with NAV. Although we're retired (old folks), I haven't had any problems figuring the MFT system out.....doing the update, etc. At least figuring out all we're interested in doing. However.... the other day, while on a trip with my phone charger pluged in......when I unpluged it one time while driving.....the screen goes out. Just blank. I checked to see if the SD card had poped out, it hadn't. Maybe it was bumped, not sure. After a few minutes, SYNC comes on saying it's doing maintenance check, then screen gradually comes back up. Second issue. Got into car the other day after wife had been driving it....and radio station was on a FM HD station she likes. I went to Sirius (manually) to one of my presets (CNBC), and while it went to Sirius, showing market stats, etc, her FM music stayed on. Couldn't make it change manually....so I asked it thru voice recognition to change to my Sirius preset.....and it did. Her music went away and CNBC voice come on. Strange. I sometimes wonder if this isn't oo much technology for a vehicle.
  8. Just curious.....are these HID aftermarket kits legal? Again not being critical, just wondering. I've had factory (legal) HID's on several cars in the past, and like the lighting. But didn't think it was that much better than stock lighting. Also think the stock lighting on our 2012 Edge is pretty good. Am well aware of the advantages of aftermarket HID lighting, just wondering if making them legal takes away some of their brightness.
  9. I don't believe synthetic oil is improving your mileage....at least as compared to the Ford 5W20....which has some synthetic base stock in it (though I doubt very much). Full synthetic will improve mileage compared to older higher viscosity oils. When you get to the 0W and 5W oils, not much difference in friction between any oils. My new Honda CRV takes 0W20. I figure you are just a very good and careful driver, who pays attention to how he drives his car. It takes some skill and patience to get terrific mileage.
  10. I use climate control all the time. And still get the posted mileage I noted above. 27-28 hiway. However....if warm enough for compressor to run, always use auto....and recirculate...to save a little fuel. You can set the temp on the high side (around 74 in my Edge) to keep compressor from running too much. If my engine is on, 99.9 % of time climate system is set to auto. Windows closed. I don't think of it as an A/C system....it's a climate control system for all kind of weather. Read your owners manual, and you'll discover it will put it on recirculate occasionally when it's beneficial. I sometimes wish I lived where the outside air temp is just right for inside cooling, where the humidity is just right, and where the air is clean enough to breath without being filtered. But I don't. If I did, I could put it on auto, with a/c compressor off. I still would not roll down the windows. That creates drag.
  11. Learn to drive for fuel economy. It makes a huge difference. Go to Hiper Milers web site. Although you don't have to go to their extremes. In my younger days, I spent a lot of time at the drag strip. Superchaged some Mustangs. Learned alot about making HP. Now....I'm into modern tech. Just love the technology in some of these cars. Am constantly trying to get the very best fuel economy. I believe I could get almost 30 MPG highway on our 2012 Edge if I realy tried....mainly just driving a lot slower and easing off from starts, and using the brakes as little as possible. You can do that also.....if you want to. Good luck.
  12. I don't particularly like the looks of these plastic coated wheels.....they're on our 2012 Limited......but they sure do clean up easy. You can almost just spray wheel cleaner on them and hose thm off. Wife likes them....that's what is important. I would prefer nice polished clear coated silver aluminum wheels, or just painted aluminum.
  13. Using 5W20? Sounds like slow engine pressure to me at start up. Also....do you start engine with a heavy foot....give it gas like in old days before electronics....ie... rev it up at start? Try starting without touching accelerator and foot off gas. Still do it?
  14. Living in Florida.....I never turn OD off. If living where very hilly or mountainous....where I might need to keep RPM up to better climb hills at less than full throttle, would probably turn it off for climbing. Especially if engine is struggling at low RPM and doesn't seem to want to down shift on it's own. May turn OD off to come down a long steep mountain also. If I needed some additional engine braking.
  15. I agree....sounds like bad battery to me. You can have it checked out at any auto parts store....or dealership.
  16. . The answer is no. Just not worth it. There always is a few HP left in the stock tune...the factory tunes it safely a tad rich when new so as it leans out with age it's not too lean. You can run it a tad leaner if you are careful. That might make 2-3 HP. You can run a louder freer flowing exhaust....that might be worth another 2-3 HP. You can tune it for premium fuel.....that might add 6-8 HP....but increases fuel cost about 10%. None of these mods really does much for performance in an Edge. It would take 10-15 HP increase to even make the vehicle one tenth of a second quicker in the 1/4 mile. You can't notice that on the street. Although some claim they can. Loud exhaust usually makes the car sound faster.....even if it isn't. IMHO the Edge is not a good candidate for performance mods. it's too heavy and you can't easily change the front axle ratio. In a rear wheel drive vehicle like a Mustang....just changing the rear axle ratio to about 10% lower gear makes the car feel like you added 50-75 HP. You can't do that with an Edge (you could run little bitty small diameter wheels in front LOL....gives same effect). Changing gearing (increasing mechanical advantage) is the biggest bang for the buck you can do for a vehicle's acceleration....and that makes it use more fuel since it's usually turning more RPM all the time..
  17. I admit to over reacting to original post. It comes from some posts I have seen on here about how the M position on our shifter with + and - buttons can be used like you're driving a manual trans for down shifting everytime time you want to slow down. My reaction was that's a little over use of the feature. So sorry....next time I'll read and study the post a little better.
  18. My point above is.....when I first started driving in late 50's I was taught to use the gears to slow down and not bakes....mainly because brakes were not so good then. And transmissions were mostly manual. Now we have superb brakes in most cars, which are still relatively cheap to fix when they wear. Transmissions are very expensive to fix. So I don't see the point in down shifting every time you go off an off ramp or just want to slow down. Most experts agree with this. And sure.....if coming off a long steep hill or mountain, it's still smart to control speed with trans...agree. It won't hurt anything. Just don't see point in using our transmissions like you are a road racer or something.
  19. I own both a 2012 Honda FWD CRV (New Model) EX L with Nav, and a 2012 FWD 3.5 Edge Limited with NAV. Edge about $8000 more. There is no comparison.....The Edge is a lot more car.....in about every way you can measure. And it should be....it costs more. Although interior volume is about the same on both. FE on CRV is about 25 around town and 32-33 on hwy...for me. Same driving style in Edge.....about 20 around town, and 26-28 on hwy. I do believe the CRV is more car for the money....just not more car. CRV will probably be cheaper to own....fewer gadgets to fix, better resale etc. BTW.....No timing belts on CRV.....They use chains, just like Edge. Believe most Honda products now use timing chains. CRV weighs about 400-500 lbs less than Edge, and has a 185 HP engine with 5 speed servicable transmission. Performance adequate for me in CRV, but Edge stronger if you live in hilly country, at altitude, tow, drive with a heavy foot, etc. Both 0-60's mid 8's CRV, mid 7's Edge. They are really not in same category. Just can't compare them. (CRV does hold my bike upright inside....Edge won't.....that's why I bought the CRV) When I go on a trip.....I take the Edge. It's more comfortable. Better seats, nicer gadgets, etc. Both have voice recognition for phone and NAV, but graphics on dash are much better and more modern on Edge. New model CRV better compared to new model Escape. (as noted above)
  20. I don't know what all the discussion about Toyota's and sludge (and M 1) has to do with this question. Ford's 5W30 semi synthetic factory fill for 2.0 EB is more than adequate, as is their recommended viscosity. You can go by the OCI on the dash, in the owners manual, or what common sense tells you if your driving is a little different from the norm....short trips in cold weather, towing in hot weather, driving on dusty roads, etc. But generally oil change intervals are increasing in modern vehicles. How the vehicle is used over time to me dictates OCI. Also.....I like to rotate my tires a little sooner than I need an oil change. I may have to re think that a little, because I think 7500 miles, or about 9 months, is a reasonable oil change interval for the way my vehicles are used.
  21. The Edge can deliver decent fuel economy with careful driving. I've been able to get 27.5 to 28 on several long trips over 3-4 tanks of fuel. This in a FWD 2012 3.5 Limited model. On mostly level terrain. Using fuel with up to 10% ethanol. However.....that was cruising in the 65-70 MPH range, hot weather driving with climate control on auto and recirculate (saves some fuel), tires inflated 36-37 cold (in my garage 75-80 F is cold) and being careful accelerating out of rest stops, stuff like that. Basically driving for fuel economy, something many of you don't wish to do. Going over 70 or so kills fuel economy. Maybe next body style will be more aerodynamic. Congrats on your AWD economy run!
  22. It's smart on your part to get it done.
  23. I live in Florida. No need for trans braking. But understand your points. Still think using transmission for braking mostly old school. Realize there are exceptions. I would probably lock out O/D coming off a Rocky Mtn.
  24. I try to avoid using my transmission like that. That's what brakes are for. And brakes are relatively cheap to fix when they wear out. Transmission not so cheap. Don't understand why Ford would program that in. Maybe when towing, brakes need some help. Maybe 50-60 years ago, when car brakes didn't work well, you used the transmission to help you slow down. Not now.
