Buying a 2013 Edge sport with high millage?

Hello,

 

Thanks in advance for any advice. I have been looking at some of the used Edges. There is a 2013 Sport model with 66,000 km and according to the seller, most of it is highway and he has taken care of the vehicle and kept up with the scheduled maintenance. He bought it on July 2012. So, 66,000 km in one and half year! Also, he is willing to take the vehicle to a dealership for inspection. He is asking $29,000. What do you guys think? I know it's a lot of kms but the price is tempting. Please help!

With 227,000 on my 08 almost 98 percent highway I would say it is a good deal and I bet he has plenty of brake pad left also. If he had to replace the brakes then it was not all highway as I got 147K on the fronts and 198K on the rears with highway driving. Check that out to make sure and that would prove the truth about the type of driving.

That's a good point! I was actually thinking the other way around! I mean I thought with 66K in a year, I will need to change the brake pads soon. So basically you're saying if the inspection report says the brake pads are in good shape, then the millage is highway?

 

Also, How about the engine? Should I be worried about the engine? Will it feel old/not fresh?

Highway miles are easy miles. Get it checked out but if he's really the original owner then I wouldn't be too worried.

How do I make sure he is the original owner? I mean, he showed me the receipt from the dealership with details of the pricing and I will get the carproof too (for accident history). I think this should be enough, right?

 

So, considering the high millage (in 1 year), you wouldn't worry about the engine and also the electronic features, like MFT?

 

My last question... would you recommend buying extended warranty? If so, what type?

Think about it - how many times do you use the brakes on a 20 mile drive in city or mixed conditions? 10, 20, 30? How many times on a 20 mile highway drive? 2? 3?

 

The engine is also cruising on the highway - much less abuse than city driving where you're accelerating and braking, stopping and starting.

 

I'd say 66K kms of almost pure highway miles would be the equivalent of 20K kms of normal driving.

 

I would only recommend a Ford ESP warranty and only if you can't afford to pay for a large repair out of pocket in which case you should roll it into the loan.

If you can afford to pay cash for it then you can afford to pay for repairs and in the long run you'll come out ahead not buying extended warranties.

So, if I take it to inspection and there is nothing wrong with it, then you would recommend buying it.

Would you know if ESP (flood ford esp) is offered to Canada too? Cause on their website, they ask for province and Canada is not there!

Not sure - you'd have to check with Flood Ford to be sure. I would also check the Ford ESP site to see if it says anything about Canadian vehicles.

 

akirby, I have one more question. have 2 options now. Would you please help me choose one.

 

1- 2013 Edge Sport, 68,000 km, $27000 (lowered the price), one owner

2- 2013 Edge Limited, 55,000 km, $29,500 (and possibly plus a 5 year bumper to bumper warranty, the seller works in a dealership and says can get it for me), one owner

 

Both are fully loaded (same packages).

 

Also, is there a big difference in gas millage between Limited and Sport?

That's entirely up to you - get the one you like the best. Fuel economy should not be that much different.

 

Thanks akirby. I like them both. Of course, Sport looks better, but living in Alberta, Canada, I'm thinking the sport might be more expensive to maintain. Which one you, as an experienced Edge owner, think is a better deal?

I believe the Sport comes with tire sizes of 22 inch, where as the Limited comes standard with 18 inch, or 20 inch optional. I don't know how much of a difference you would notice in snow, or when it comes time to purchase replacement tires (price wise).

 

The wheels on the Limited, either 18" or 20" are going to be chrome clad. That means the first curb you hit, you are going to damage the wheel covering. It can not be repaired. You will have to live with it, or replace the wheel. I'm not sure if the Sport uses a chrome clad wheel, or an alloy wheel.

 

The engine size is the big difference between the two models, but window MPG is within 1 of each other I believe. The Sport has some nice appearance differences, including the rocker panel moldings, the front grill, and the rear tail light lenses may be different from what I read on another post.

 

Why Ford didn't even offer HID's on the Sport model is beyond my thinking. Other owner's have added aftermarket kits and are generally happy with them.

 

One thing you can try is put the VIN number into a search engine such as Google. Sometimes old ads will show if the car had been up for sale anywhere else. I have found owner's who have purchased a car, then tried selling it as if they were the original owner or had owned it for a long time. Just one additional free step to take to help you in your search.

 

You can also enter the VIN to see and print the facsimile of the original window sticker, showing options, standard equipment, etc.

Regarding the 22" wheels, I've been doing some research and some people say the ride is rougher and might not be the best option for winter. But the current owner has the 22" (no smaller winter tires).

Maintenance should nearly (if not exactly) equal, except for replacement tires.

 

But note that the Limited has more options not available on the Sport like HID headlights (not sure what else).

 

Thanks for the info. I didn't know the sport doesn't come with HID headlights (which doesn't make sense at all). I think I'll go with the sport.
