brian75zhp
I had a bad shudder coming from the front brakes. Replaced the pads and rotors. The old rotor was rusting terribly on the outer and inner parts of the braking surface. See photo. This was primarily on the inboard surface of the rotor (piston side of the caliper) but occurred on both the driver and passenger side. This was a certified pre owned 2011 sport. So it should be all OEM parts. Any idea what would cause this? I just put new pads and rotors on and don't want it happening again if something else is wrong. akirby
Road salt?
brian75zhp
Not likely road salt. Didn't happen on the rears and it is not as prevalent on the outer surface. It's like the pad was not touching at the edges and it allowed surface rust to build up that would normally wear off after the first few stops. macbwt
Caliper or rather brake pad was frozen and would not compress and when it broke free the rust was so built up it completely wore the pad like sand paper. Periodically check your pads and lubricate them each fall/early winter to ensure they are clean and move freely. How bad were the brackets? Where the pads seated into the clips? I went with the Autozone coated rotors to help prevent the rusting or at least slow it down. Real time testing results will be posted by me when I get them through a winter. Here is what I did. akirby
I was talking about the rust around the pad sweep area. If there was rust where the pad normally sweeps then it's a bad caliper.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
FoMoCo is stamped on the rotor hat, so looks like OEM alright. Definitely the pads were not making proper contact with the rotor, as you can see from the pad itself as well as the rotor. Either road salt or brake fluid could have caused this, or maybe the vehicle was sitting for a long period of time in very wet conditions before being moved. Then the pads were "un-stuck"/"un-frozen" at some point for use.
macbwt
Brian75zhp, what is the mileage on this edge? Was the other rotor also in the same condition? brian75zhp
49k miles on it. Was a certified ford pre owned with 20k 2 years ago. Can still see the "FoMoCo" stamp in the rotor. The other driver and passenger rotors were nearly identical. Both had that same severe wear "stripe" down the middle. Both were primarily affected on the inboard side and both outboard sides were worn similarly but not quite as bad.
macbwt
Good thing you caught it and repair the brakes. Looked like you were running about 50 percent of your stopping power with those rusty plates. 49k miles on it. Was a certified ford pre owned with 20k 2 years ago.
