edgemaster Report post Posted August 20, 2015 Hi, My wife's 2007 Edge acts up. The AC seems to work only at times and the temp gauge shows all kinds of temperatures. I had it tested and the egine temp is okay, there's enough coolant in the system, everything seems to be fine. Could it be some kind of sensor? Shouldn't the engine check light come on? Or are there failure codes stored inside the OBDII system without that light coming on? Where should I start searching? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. akirby Report post Posted August 20, 2015 My guess would be intermittent cooling fan failure. With the A/C on both cooling fans should be running.
edgemaster Report post Posted August 20, 2015 Thanks for the quick response. Is there any way to test that? Would the temp gauge go all the way up without the cooling fan?
akirby Report post Posted August 20, 2015 Is there any way to test that? With the A/C on both cooling fans should be running. Crank vehicle. Turn on A/C. Count the number of cooling fans running. 2 = good. 1 or 0 - replace cooling fans and controller.
edgemaster Report post Posted August 20, 2015 Did that! The fan on the driver side does not run, the one on the passenger side does. Are both fans supposed to run when the engine is cold or only when the engine is hot?
akirby Report post Posted August 20, 2015 To be safe, make sure the engine is up to temp before turning on the A/C.
edgemaster Report post Posted August 21, 2015 OK, engine warm, no driver-side fan. Replace the fan assembly?
akirby Report post Posted August 21, 2015 That's the normal procedure, assuming it's actually overheating when that happens. Is the temp gauge showing hot when that happens or is it going up and down erratically? If it's just going to hot then I'd say the fans need to be replaced. If it's doing strange things then maybe it's something else and the fan not turning on is a symptom of something else like a bad temp sensor. The controller is part of the new assembly. I used the Dorman part from Amazon for $120 or so - not sure if it's still available. There is a replacement procedure in one of the forums here - let me know if you can't find it. edgemaster Report post Posted August 21, 2015 The temp gauge sits mostly straight in the middle of "C" and "H", fan running or not. Only every now and then (maybe once a month) the temp gauge goes to hot and is back to normal after waiting 15 minutes or so. The engine never seems to overheat during that time. Could it be some kind of sensor? Shouldn't the engine check light come on? Or are there failure codes stored inside the OBDII system without that light coming on? akirby Report post Posted August 21, 2015 When it goes to hot, stop the vehicle, wait a minute or so and crank it again. If it goes back to normal immediately then it could be a sensor or it could also be a steam pocket in the coolant (air). When the steam pocket hits the sensor the temperature spikes temporarily. Might need to fill the coolant and bleed the air out. But from what I understand both fans should always be running with the engine at temp and the A/C on, so it does sound like a bad fan or fan controller. edgemaster Report post Posted August 21, 2015 By what are the two fans controlled? I don't mean the controller unit but what event/signal triggers one or the other fan to run or to stop?
akirby Report post Posted August 21, 2015 Lots of good info here especially post 13. This is also the repair procedure previously mentioned. http://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/12731-radiator-fan-assembly-replacement-procedure/?hl=fans
edgemaster Report post Posted August 23, 2015 Well, I checked the fan motor for any kind of resistance but it seems to be an open circuit. For good measure, I applied 12 V to the open fan connector and it didn't run. Seems to be solid proof. I'll order a new fan assembly. Thanks for all your help. edgemaster Report post Posted August 29, 2015 So, I replaced the fan assembly and now the driver-side fan runs again. I disconnected the upper left of the radiator hose and removed the air filter housing. Taking out and replacing the fan assembly took all of 5 minutes. Thanks for all your help, guys. Cheers, Ed
