APIM Failed Edge 2016

Recommended Posts

I bought a used 2016 Edge in October 2025. From the first day my phone would randomly drop from Bluetooth. I checked my Sync and saw the version I had installed was from 2006. Yes, in a 2016, I asked the same question. Ford said I could download the update on a USB and install it myself but the process was too difficult, as the file was too large. I brought it to Ford for 5 hours they tried to do the update and when I got the car back, a message popped up saying "The installation ran out of space or does not work with this version." I tried for two weeks to get in touch with Ford and they finally called back to say they need to run a diagnostic on to find out more for $279.99. He called today and said the APIM is showing it has failed and wants to charge me over $1600 to fix because supposedly my warranty won't cover this. I am super frustrated because I feel like this should have been fixed or at least disclosed to me prior to me buying the vehicle. They aren't budging.

I am curious if anyone has run into something like this or are aware of a different way to get this fixed that won't literally cause me to need to sell my kidneys on the black market.

Based on prior experience, do not trust the dealership when they tell you something is out of warranty or warranty does not cover an issue.

If they tell you this, simply call Ford Corporate and ask them if your issue is covered under warranty or not.  They will look up your VIN and tell you.

Presuming it is, and the same dealership refuses to honor the warranty, you will have to find another dealership to help you out.

And when you call Ford Corporate, ask them why the dealership would sell you a faulty car in the first place.

My 2017 Edge Factory and Extended warranty ran out some time back, so don't expect there'd be any warranty cover remaining on a 2016 model.

Some used car sales places offer some warranty but its usually very limited cover and very short duration.

The vehicle under discussion may have had some 3rd party service and repairs done to the entertainment system.

Not enough information offered by @CassieB1990 to offer any reliable advice.
