Engine shutdown while driving

Engine shut down this afternoon while driving about 35 MPH on a residential street. Warning lights came on and engine had shutdown. After car came to a stop I put it in park, turned the key off and restarted the car, put it in drive and went on home just like nothing had happened. I consider this a major problem. Will take it to Ford dealer tomorrow to have it checked out.

I'd consider it a major issue also.. since it's for sure still under warranty, just let the dealer "deal" with it. Not sure if these have a Cam Position Sensor (CPS), but I had one of those go out on my truck and it would do this... real fun trying to slow down a 7200lbs truck in traffic with no power assist for brakes or steering.

Why would the transmission lockup just because the engine died?

Only had this kind of thing happen on one car so far, my old Nissan. The mass air flow sensor fell off the engine and as the computer didnt think there was any air flowing through the engine, it cut the engine off. I coasted to the side and tried to restart, got a tow and had a nice $300 bill for them to stick a new sensor back on as it was just out of warranty!

The only way i can think to flip this car is by driving really fast onto the curb or something higher, i have already tested the rollover prevention in cornering and the braking it applies appears to really stop the car from even thinking of rolling. I agree with akirby, why/how could the transmission lock up from the engine turning off?

Ijust turned 1000 miles (1016 to be exact). Dealer could could not work me in today but I have 7:30 appointment in the morning. I think I was lucky because I was on a residential street and driving at at low speed with no trafic. I still have to drive down to the dealer in the morning, about 17 miles in a busy part of Nashville, hope I make it. If it happans at a higher speed I think the best thing to do is shift into "N" and let it come to a stop because this car is towable behind a camper up to 65 miles MPH in "N" per a Ford product information sheet that I have seen (FWD only).

I had this as a recurrent problem on my very first car....a 1992 Saturn SL2. It came from a build up of crud (???) and the sensors didn't think the engine was getting enough air. I would just be cruising along, sometimes quite fast and the engine would just shut down. I can totally understand hoe disconcerting that can be. please keep us informed of what the dealer says tomorrow.

WOW.....You guys really watch way toooooo much TV. Maybe it'll blow up in a huge fireball for no good reason also....LOL

 

Ford will be able to pull up the fault codes to see what caused this issue.

 

I'm sure they will correct it for you. Don't worry. It will all work out ok.

I'm with you on the flipping, but you might be wrong about the code, if the problem is in the CAT, if something has come loose inside for what ever reason it won't show up as a fault, this is not very likely though as it would continue to stall, not right away but as you drove for a distance it would plug again.

Took it to the dealer this morning: Conclusions from service tech: "Could not duplicate customer concern ran EEC test pass ok oasis no concerns CN found". (I need an interpreter) They said if it happans again bring it back which is undersood.

 

Did not have a problem driving today, ran perfect (65 miles total today)

 

At this point I think we may be seeing a computer glich in the software - will keep on driving and if it happans again I will be sure to let everybody know.

Could be your computer motherboard.... my former toyota did not shut down.. but I had engine light come on in first 300kms (180 miles) - scared the crap out of me.

 

Techs said same - reset it - came back at 3000kms - replaced carbon filter in catalytic converter - came back at 10,000 - then they wanted to disassemble my fuel line... I said no way.. Im calling head office - I think its the computer.

 

Toyota investigated - and whole computer was replaced - never happened again.. at least a $3000Cdn warranty job.

 

I repeat the story often - just to point out Toyota aint perfect either - but they did handle it beautifully as did the dealership

 

I hope Ford will do the same for you. Fingers crossed - Hope it doesn't happen again.

I had a similar problem with my jeep, twice. It would just quit.

 

It was a ground strap from the engine to the firewall that had rubbed through the harness to the fuel rail killing it intermittently and the second time was poor gas. The station I bought it from had gotten water in their tank. There were several people who ran into the same problem. Just buzzing along and poof. Then after some cranking it would light and go for a half day and then poof. Quit again. They had to replace the tank at the station. Once the water ladened fuel was out of my tank no more troubles.

"Could not duplicate customer concern". Should be banned from the language. I once had a Honda Accord EX, (the best one they made) that was manufactured on a Monday or Friday in Marysville Ohio. Had so many problems with that car, but the one big problem I had, whenever I would take it in, I got the same story. "COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM". Dealer will not take customers word for it. One day while talking with District Service Rep about another problem, I mentioned this one big problem. He said to me, "oh, we have a fix for that now"! District Rep got me an appointment at another dealer, ordered part, and got it fixed. That Accord EX had so many problems, after a couple more, I just went to my friendly Toyota dealer and traded for a Camry which I kept for 100,000 miles and it never had any problems whatsoever. Have not purchased a Honda car to this day.

Went to the casino, did not win a lot of money but EDGE ran great - between yesterday and today - (280.7 miles - gallons used 11.9 = 23.6 MPG (driving speed range on interstate 70-80 MPH - did not use cruise control)
