bbbusta Posted August 3, 2011 Report Share Posted August 3, 2011 Hello everyone. I joined this group because I was just about to buy a 2008 Edge Limited from a dealer. Unfortunately upon opening the hood, I found the battery terminals to be severely corroded and the areas adjacent to the battery to be stained by corrosion as well. The dealer took the car into the shop and said there was nothing wrong. I disagree as that amount of corrosion was very unusual. A subsequent search on the internet revealed that there is a battery problem with the Edge. I backed out of the deal and I am staying with my 98 Explorer for now. I think I made the right decision. I'd say take another look at it if it is available. I bought used and fully intend to handle my maintenance issues or needs myself. You might reconsider that deal. Battery terminals corroded that bad would tell me that the previous owner new nothing about autos or just didn't take care of it. Yes, it's a cheap fix but may indicate that the vehicle was not maintained well. You will find a really nice Edge if you take your time. Good luck! I firmly believe there is an overcharging problem with the car that is causing the battery acid to boil and condense on the battery surface. There was a significant amount of corrosion residue on the engine and fender well around the battery. As I said I have a 98 Explorer that I have owned since it was new and it is cleaner than many cars 1/2 it's age and it has been bulletproof for 13 years. Again, I respect all of your comments but I had to make the decsison to spend my money where I thought best. But I have to say, I still liked that Edge. I've had to replace two batteries recently (both were bad) and both had a lot of corrosion around the terminals. And if it was overcharging then a simple alternator swap would fix that. 41deacon Posted August 5, 2011 Report Share Posted August 5, 2011 I feel you on that. I would not buy that particular vehicle but don't let that one vehicle turn you off to the Edge. I just recently went from a 2006 Ford Explorer to a 2009 Edge Sport. Words cannot explain how happy I am with the Edge. Take the leap of faith, I think you will find it worth it.
