  1. Since they didn't use it I didn't see what they have either, just know they only use it on the big trucks. I thought the machine hooked up to the trans cooler lines and while the trans pumped fluid out to be cooled it was disposed of and the return hose was sucking from a clean reservoir. But come to think of it...do Edge's have trans coolers if you didn't get the towing package? I do know another dealer quoted $225 and stressed it was a complete fluid change so you get everything out of the torque converter, just didn't go there since they are not as easy to get into. In light of what I over heard I might not bother. I could do a drain and refill every three oil changes or something and play it safe.
  2. Guys take this for what it is worth but this is what happened to me this morning. Last week I called into the dealer by my office to get a quote on a transmission flush and was quoted $199. I double checked with the service writer that this wasn't just a drain and fill it was a complete flush using the machine; he double checked with a tech and came back confirming it was a complete fluid replacement. So today I go in and noticed the guy was just draining the fluid, the truck wasn't hooked up to the power flusher. So I went over to the service writer and asked what was going on; he went out to the tech and was told they don't power flush Edges. When he came back in he told me he was initially given the wrong info, apologized and said they only flush the bigger transmissions. The service manager told him to have the tech complete the drain and fill at no charge which I thought was strange. When I stepped away from the desk I heard the manager say they have seen a high seal failure rate on the smaller transmissions after a power flush so they refuse to do them; I assume for liability reasons. While I haven't heard of this happening I figured I would share since they did have the machine and could have done the power flush easy enough and writing off the cost of labor and fluid was surely more than just connecting the truck to the machine. When they were done I did offer to at least pay for the fluid but the service writer said it was their mistake and apologized again. So like I said take it for what it is worth...I don't see they would have written off that cost unless there was a real reason to from their stand point. Interested to see what others think of this...but I guess my plans have changed, I will just do drain and fills maybe every 30k to keep things clean and running good.
  3. Another trip and no issues, some at work are starting to wonder if it is my wife's driving....I won't say that to her though. Even managed to get 27.5mpg on the way to work and confirmed on Google that the ride to work is more or less down hill so that accounts for the difference each way. Just surprised the Edge takes such a hit (6-7mpg) for only a 700ft change. Seems like a big drop over a 40 mile route.
  4. So on the truck seemed to drive fine home as well but the average MPG dropped to just under 20. This is more typical for us and I do know my other vehicle gets 2-3mpg less on the way home (slightly different route). When I got home all four wheel were more or less the same temp and I measured the old pads only to find they were 3 thousandths wider from ear to ear than the new ones. So there goes that theory that the new pads were slightly oversized. Either way two trips down and no over heating so hopefully tomorrow will be good too. If not I am taking it in for a trans flush anyway so I can have them take a look. Normally I would keep at it myself but we are about to drive from NJ to SC and don't need/want issues I don't have time to resolve.
  5. Still battling this. I have taken these apart so many times to grease and check things it is pretty sad. The other day one side got really hot again when my wife drove to the mall. I left work to go see what I could do and was able to drive it home with NO heat build up issue. Last night I took them apart to check everything out again and I can find nothing. Based on mrgroupers recommendation I popped the clips out and cleaned that up but mine were surprisingly good. Since the bracket seemed good I was reluctant to grind anything away so I cleaned it and put some anti seize on it to hopefully keep it from rusting. But I did notice that the slides that clip in had markings like the pads bound up. Unfortunately I don't know if this was due to heat build up or what caused the pads to stick. Since the bracket was clean I figured it was safer to grind a little off each brake pad to get the extra clearance figuring I can buy new pads cheaper and faster than brackets. So last night I did that on the drivers side only and just regreased the passenger side. Driving to work this morning the truck felt great and I even averaged 25mpg which has never happened. So I figured I had this licked but wanted to grind a little off the passenger side too. So I did this on my lunch and took a quick spin. While the brakes didn't smoke they do seem quite hot for such a short trip. I found the rears to be hotter than the fronts, I guess maybe the vented rotors and added mass may help but seemed strange to me. I guess I will have a better idea if this grinding of the pads did anything. As a side note I took a measurement of my new pads and will compare that to my old ones tonight to see if they are slightly oversized.
  6. Man I am kicking myself tonight. Yesterday morning I had other projects to do outside before it got too hot and while I was working on that the wife ran out to get lunch. When she came back the brakes were a normal temp even though she went off the mountain so I figured they were fine. Then this morning she drove 40 minutes to go to the mall then back no problem. At this point I thought we were out of the woods until tonight. We drove to my mom's for dinner and while it was fine going there coming home apparently the one side got stuck again and was hot and smoking a little when we got home. Figures, now I don't have time to do this before I go to work. But I guess I will be pulling this apart again this week.
  7. Txs...I will try cleaning up the carrier under the clips tomorrow. I was just about to report that the parking brake and piston all move freely, just had the wife jump in and actuate them while I watched. So what you're saying could be it.
  8. But if it were the caliper the wear should have been more or less even when you compare the inboard pad to the outboard pad. But in my case the inboard pad had more wear which normally would point to either the pad not free to move in the carrier or the slide pins being seized. All of this seemed ok but I replaced all of the carrier clips anyway. Also both the drivers and passenger side had the same wear pattern, I guess both could have failed but wondering if it could be the parking brake since that would effect both sides and could also account for the heating I see with new pads and rotors. Just not sure how the parking brake works, would have thought this would balance the pressure across the rotor too. Maybe I should look for a parking brake adjustment just to rule it out.
  9. Did the newer models suffer from a water leak? I would look into this, it could be the previous owner had this leak and got fed up dealing with it and decided to dump it once fixed since it left a bad taste in their mouth. The repair should be listed in Ford's system so check that out for sure.
  10. Hoping someone can help me out. I recently replaced the brake on my wife's 2011 and found the rear pads to have worn uneven from one side of the rotor to the other. The side on the piston was worn the preferentially and not parallel to the backing pad. When I took everything apart I did find one broken caliper slide (part pad slides on...not the slide pin). I also checked the slide pins which were moving free, the only thing I noticed was the vacuum/pressure effect was different from side to side. Anyway I regreased the pins and put new clips in before installing the new pads. The calipers also turned in with minimal effort. So I am kind of at a loss for what would have caused this uneven wear or why the brakes appear to be dragging now. I know the piston was pushed out far enough since it fit easily over the pads and I had to pump the pedal a few times to get them to contact. Any ideas? I am starting to think the parking brake but I would have thought if this were dragging both sides would wear not just the one. To me one side wearing over the other points to the slide pins...but they were fine.
  11. Please file a complaint...I did just because I really think someone is going to end up hurt.
  12. I just had mine replaced under the extended warranty. While I am happy I didn't have to pay out of pocket I am amazed this isn't a recall based on the way ours failed. We drove to a friends house and the truck was fine. When we left about 20 minutes later and were heading down his driveway we had almost no brakes. My wife managed to stop the truck and I limped it to the dealer but had this happened on Rt 80 in rush hour we would have had an accident. But since this could have been a big problem I plan on filling a complaint with the NHTSA in hopes it could force a recall.
  13. Well it was the brake booster. The dealer replaced it under the extended coverage which is great but I am still amazed that Ford hasn't issued a recall for this. The failure was so sudden and reduced braking to maybe 25-30% of normal that I am surprised this hasn't caused an accident yet. I think I will file a complaint on NHSTA.org. Thankfully we are all safe but if this happened on Rt80 during rush hour things could have been very different. So maybe if I issue a complaint it might end up forcing them to do something and keep others safe too.
  14. Yeah knew about the extended coverage but txs. Was just thrown by how it failed. Drove fine to his house then going down the driveway she freaked out.I just can't believe this isn't a recall. Had we not been in his driveway and were on rt80 in traffic there would have been an accident. I had to plan on braking distances to be 3-4xs longer than normal...like driving in an ice storm.
  15. So tonight we are leaving a friend's house and my wife screams WTH is wrong with the brakes! I have no brakes! Luckily we were barely moving and she was able to stop using the parking brake. So I got in an confirmed the pedal was crazy firm and had little braking power. I limped it home but noticed sometimes it actually felt like the pedal was pushing back. Other times if I pushed real hard then the pedal would go super soft and then it sounded kind of like air leaking out of a balloon. Looking at the extended warranty it mentions a soft pedal and make it sound like braking is maintained. I clearly am experiencing something different, mostly a firm pedal and minimally effective brakes. I did find some posts saying that their bad booster had a firm pedal too but could this be something else? Can't believe this wasn't a recall if it is the booster. Even if a small percentage fail without notice in this manner they should be proactively fixing them. Losing faith in Ford by the day.
  16. No...if you have an OBD dongle or cable then download FORScan. They created a setup for me to do this which is probably in their latest build.
  17. NP...if the version you have doesn't have the calibration feature for the camera reach out to Forscan. Initially they didn't have it available but when I asked they created it ans requested I test it. It worked perfect, but I am not sure it is incorporated into the latest build.
  18. I have been through this...camera replacement is the only fix. Dealer wanted $450, bought the camera online for ~$100 and then used forscan to calibrate it. Not hard to do if you are mechanically inclined...there are a few threads here about this issue.
  19. I just put a reed switch in parallel this weekend. Super easy to do, costs like 5 bucks and will be a whole lot easier to replace if it ever goes bad. But these switches typically last forever, unlike the Ford switch that was replaced previously. Just if you do it make sure you pick the dark green with violet strip, not the lime green.
  20. This TSB: http://revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/DownloadPdf?id=171259mentions pressing the new fitting in place but not really how to remove the original.
  21. OK I ended up getting the Conti's because with all discounts included I was able to get them for about 50% less than the Michelin's. So while I think they would have performed better it was a hard sell to pay a couple hundred more. Hope I don't regret that decision. I will update this thread after we get them installed and have some real world experience.
  22. Thanks for the heads up on the Michelins...to be honest I never looked at them since I really didn't like the Lattitude HP's that came on the Edge. Normally I don't base my decisions on the subjective ratings of 9.5 vs 8.9 but looking at the test results, the Michelins stopped in the wet in 111ft from 50mph vs 140ft with the Conti. That is pretty significant!
  23. A while back I thought I got a great deal on a set of Yokohama YK580's but they turned out to be mediocre at best. While performance was good enough the treadlife was no where near the 60k they claim. I think we will be lucky to get half that. So I am in search of a new set of tires and reviews of the LX20's seem favorable but I wanted to see if anyone had real world experience with them. Since the Edge is not a performance vehicle I am most concerned about wet traction. So I would be willing to give up a little dry grip for wet condition abilities. Any other recommendations? I was considering the Pirelli Scoprion Verde's but in Tire Rack's testing the LX20 had better braking etc in the wet.

    IDS/Scan tool?

To be honest I am not well versed in what this software can do but I would suggest you check out their forum FORScan.org
