If we replaced oil pan with part number FT4Z6675D but neglected to do valve covers as referenced in the TSB could that cause the car to start smoking intermittently?

My parents have a 2017 Continental with the 2.7 turbo. It has seen meticulous maintenance from them with no issues other than the terrible oil pan leak. In December my husband replaced the oil pan with an aluminum pan purchased on eBay and the OEM gasket. It's an aluminum pan part number FT4Z6675D. A week later they drove 1500 miles to Texas. On the trip my elderly dad thought the engine sounded noisy. He stopped and checked the oil and it wasn’t showing on the stick. He added oil and said it quieted down. He then began checking it and saying it was reading low about every time they fueled up so he was adding more oil. We went to visit them and my husband replaced the PCV valve, looked for leaks, put ats205 in it. Since returning home the car developed intermittent smoking issue. Husband then replaced  left side turbo since it seemed to smoke more on that side. Smoke cleared up for about 3 weeks. Car then started smoking again. Another shop checked and says oil (my dad had added again) when car is first started oil reads low and then after an hour reads over full. Their hypothesis is worn valve guides or heads. Car runs great, sometimes smokes, sometimes doesn’t.

Brian is wondering if this pan could be causing drain back issues. (Missing or covered passageways?) He did NOT replace valve covers as is referenced in the TSB posted earlier in this thread by @Haz. Could that be contributing?

Hoping to get some insight. Have you run into anything like this?

We are happy to pay you for consult. Your content has been hugely helpful to him in the past. Thanks for time!

There is no Aluminum OEM oil pan for these engines. So the replacement is aftermarket and you have to know exactly which it is. If it was designed similarly to 2018-2020 model years, then yes, the valve covers should have been replaced.

Ford did have the below warning (see the TSB in this post😞

CAUTION: Do not use the oil pan with press-in-place gasket on 2015-2017 model year vehicles as this oil pan is not equipped with a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) check valve. Installation of this oil pan on a 2015-2017 model year vehicle will result in oil consumption which may result in engine damage.

I can't connect at work but did hear somewhere that the Android version is no longer available - there might be other sites with copies.

    .

Yes. It is not available on the Play store, however, they do now offer an independent version that can be side loaded and license purchased.

I originally had the the Play store version and when it stopped working ForScan gave me a license for the independent version and it works.

OK this is a good thread for me to ask a question. In the event that I wanted to buy a diagnostic code reader for download to my iPhone, which one is best for me.

I have a 2024 Edge ST. I don't mind paying for it as the free stuff is usually very basic. Bottom line, what diagnostic program would you guys recommend for my vehicle. Free or not, I would love to have it on my phone. I also would need a Bluetooth adaptor. Thanks for the advice.  Jim

For me I would recommend ForScan lite with the OBDLink MX+ adapter.

The OBDLink MX+ also comes with an included app that can also read enhanced diagnostic codes, not just the check engine light, and for most vehicles. The license included with the OBDlink MX+ allows to read enhanced codes for most 1996+ vehicles.

  4. As @Wubster100 stated above, sometimes different letters indicate different features or specs, also like different spring or shock rates. However, for the part numbers you listed, the are superceding numbers with the K version being the latest.

See this listing where it is clearly stating that the K version replaces the older ones. If you enter any of the older numbers it will automatically take offer you the K version.

So all will work, what changed between versions will probably remain a mystery to customers. Generally the latest is the best.

    UPDATE!

I finally found a great Ford Dealership not far from home "Ford of Long Beach" who not only told me the whole story of the horribly installed oil pans on 2015 - 2017 Ford Edge Sport with the 2.7L Ecoboost motor and how Ford had tried for years to fix the problem.

They had gone through many changes of the oil pan but still used RTV to seal it to the motor which never worked and of course this is a one time use oil pan and I had read of owners on their third and fourth pan change at over $1100 each time.

Anyway, they now have a fix in a new pan and gasket which not only did they sell me but gave me the discounted cost so I paid $300 for both parts and not $440 which made me very happy.

The part numbers should anyone be interested in fixing this annoying problem are...
    Oil Pan. FT4Z6675-D
    Gasket. FL3Z6710-B

Yep. This fix is as per TSB 24-2345. You can read the details in this post

When the car is running and I get out of it with the key, the car honks twice. Is there a way to turn this off? I can't find such an option in the settings.

Not through the vehicle. But can be disabled using an app called ForScan.

The only way to do this without damage is to remove the headlamp assemblies - its way too finicky to seat the HID with the headlamp assy's installed in the car.

I have recently tried some D3S LED replacements from AliExpress on my Edge. They are cheap at about $35 for the pair and hence they last about 1 year only. But they are considerably brighter than HID.

Removing the old bulbs and installing the new one can be done without removing the headlights. I have done it several times now.

If it hasn't been done, is this something I can do with FORScan?

ForScan can flash the PCM firmware. But you will need a paid license, a very good wired adapter, and to know which Firmware versions are required.

I have one more major problem that concerns my car. I will allow myself to copy the email (to which I did not get a response) that I sent to Ford USA.

    "Good Morning

I have a 2023 Ford Edge from the USA with VIN number 2FMPK4K95PBA29008. I imported the car to Europe, more specifically to Poland. The car has a recall #24E09 to be carried out. Ford Poland refuses any possibility of carrying out this recall in Poland. Is it possible to send instructions directly to the service in Poland to carry out such a recall ? I have been a Ford lover for many years, so I really want my car to receive the latest updates, but unfortunately the Polish Ford representative completely ignored me. I kindly ask for help in resolving this matter."

You could look into using ForScan to update the PCM software. It can do it.

No seat specific problems are reported via OBD.

Use ForScan with a good adapter. It will read all the modules in the vehicles, including the seat related modules. Not just the generic OBD codes and will greatly help you in the diagnosis.

Also, there was a TSB for

Also, if the issue is similar, reading this other thread here on the issue and/or this post on the F150 might help.

  11. I don't remember it being announced, but they just cancelled it quietly. I think it is probably for cost reduction especially since there were issues and a recall or a customer satisfaction recall for it.

Also, probably because the feature didn't seem to get enough credit from reviews or owners to make it feasible. Although I personally like the feature and find it useful.

  12. Also, as far as I know, the oil life monitor also takes into account time with the maximum time being 12 months.

So if you change the oil as suggested above at 50%, you would be more certainly changing the oil at no more than 5,000 mile or 6 months from when it was last reset.

Or you can interpolate the interval you want, knowing that 100% means 10k miles or 12 months. For example, 60% oil life balance would mean 4k miles or 4.8 months.

    What sensors did you buy?

I got these, but my 2016 Edge being an export model is different as it runs with 433 MHz sensors.

When installed 20" wheels from a 2016 Edge Titanium my Edge automatically learned the sensors. Also when I installed the new ones from eBay it did the same.

  14. The 2016 Edge can relearn new sensors without any procedure, just drive for a few minutes with some speed, at least my 2016 did so.

What sensors did you exactly get? What model year is your F-150? They don't always use the same sensors.

Thought that the electric AWD  actuator was attached to the front of the rear differential.

    5 hours ago, 1004ron said:

It changed on the later models - not sure at what year they moved to the PTU.

In 2019 they switched to the PTU with disconnect function, however the rear differential still has the actuator. So the driveshaft can be fully disconnected from both sides and then would stop spinning.

@macbwt previously made a video of it in action:

I read the codes using forscan. What is happening is the car is freaking out because the left wheel is turning a little bit too far left, so it's programmed to enter a limp mode. The problems I described are happening due to the software programing when it detects the wheel position being out of spec.

Now I could replace the parts and still have the issue, which enters me into the rabbit hole of piece by piece repairs. But clearly I needed to replace the link anyways

I thought there are bump stops in the knuckles that limit/stop steering rotation. Maybe what caused the link to break is what is causing the wheel to turn too far out.

Maybe try to reset the codes and then see if they come back immediately when you do a full steering turn.

They mentioned stage 5 and it came out a few weeks before I did my last run

Just got a reply from LMS, they confirmed stage 5 is only for the ST (2019+). No updates for the Sport.
