Possible to replace driveshaft bearings individually?

Recommended Posts

I noticed some slight vibration in the drivetrain of my 2007 AWD Edge. Upon closer inspection it looks like the both center driveshaft bearings need replacement - I can see daylight around the black rubber (see the attached picture) and I can wiggle them around with my hand. I assume this isn't normal. Can these bearings be replaced without replacing the entire driveshaft? You can see the two bearings in this fancy drivetrain image: http://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/crop/200704/2007-ford-edge-17_600x0w.jpg

AFAIK, the bearings are not available separately, and the entire driveshaft has to be replaced.

EDIT: You can see the replaceable parts shown in the diagram here -

WWWPerfA_ZNOW it looks like you're right; the driveshaft is sold as an entire unit:

Are there any other places online that might sell this driveshaft; hopefully for less than Ford.

Check with Benny at levittownfordsupercenter.com. They have their own sponsor thread on this forum:

See what he can do for you re: shipping, as they are in NY. Maybe he can arrange for a local pickup? IDK. I am sure there are local alternatives available to you, including perhaps AutoNation dealerships.

Jiffy Lube??? Umm ... no. If looking for just the bearings, you will have to make your Edge the guinea pig. Measure the OEM part & find equivalents at, say, NAPA. For a new driveshaft, best to go to a Ford dealer like AutoNation (should be one close to you). Used driveshafts (unknown quality) are available via EBay vendors, should be available at large junkyards like LKQ.

Thanks again. I'm going to order the 2 piece/single bearing driveshaft for the 2008+ models from Benny. In the mean time I will remove the shaft so I can operate the car vibration free until the new shaft arrives.

Did your edge have the 3 piece drive shaft? And was it just a simple swap to use the 2 piece drive shaft in its place? I am currently having the same issue on my 2008 Edge and don't want to have to spend almost double for the 3 piece drive shaft. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks, I did read that also. Just want to make sure from someone who has had experience with it before ordering the part. I'm fixing it for my mother and have zero experience with the Edge. I know it's been done on the MKX which is basically the same vehicle. Just want some. Confirmation before pulling the trigger.

Gentlemen, I have found the bearing:

I was searching endlessly for a bearing on my MXK (lincoln version of the Edge) and found this. Ill update once i receive it...i know i'm late to the party but 52 bucks is worth a shot compared to 4-600 for a new shaft

Can anyone confirm if these bearings work on the 2 piece shaft with 1 hanger? I am a mechanic and can change a hanger no issue, hate to spend the $ on a whole shaft
