2015-2018 V6 Edges still have internal coolant pump?

Were the water pumps updated to an external style(in front of )timing cover, or were they kept internal(inside )timing cover so they could still fail internally as on previous models? 

Looking at upgrading my 2008 to a 2018 SEL with the 3.5.?

The water pump is still internal in the 2018 3.5L but gaskets, drive chains and other parts are vastly improved over your 2008 version.  With proper maintenance the pumps in 2011 and later Edges are (mostly) lasting a very long time.

Interesting, the water pump on our 2013 3.5L Edge started leaking externally out of a weep hole around 70K. The dealer didn't seem to think it was unusual on the 2013.

I'd suggest you visit a different dealer or an independent shop.  Coolant leaking from a weep hole of 'any' water pump indicates seals are failing.  For the '13 there are two seals.  If the inner one fails coolant is released through the weep hole as a warning.  If the second one fails coolant will dump into the oil sump potentially causing catastrophic engine damage.
