Solar Battery Charger/maintainer

Recommended Posts

Purchased a Solar powered battery maintainer to maintain my battery while my 2018 Edge is parked in the parking lot.

It came with a cigarette lighter plug adaptor or aligator clips to directly connect to the battery. I will ground the charger to the vehicle not the negitive battery post.

Would like to use the cigarette lighter plug for the convenience, but will it work? Or is this a bad idea?

Thanks.

I don't think the cigarette lighter remains powered all the time after turning off the engine. I will have to try it again, but I use the same thing, it worked with my 2017 Escape and 2012 Fusion, but my 2015 Fusion and 2019 Edge the 12v power points are on for a limited time, 20-30 minutes I think.

-EDIT-

just checked with a USB power adapter with an LED, the front console outlet (on the passenger side of the console) in my 2019 turns off between 30 minutes and 45 minutes (I think closer to 30 minutes).

??? Really... there has gotta be a better way.... My '24 Edge WILL run the battery down in a matter of 2-3weeks.. so I do need a solar charge method... I would love to be able to leave the panel on the dash and keep all the wireing INSIDE the car...

? we put men on the moon ??? right.. or that is being disputed now too.. but really team.. someone must have figged this out.. little help here. .

I would start by testing the battery health and then test for parasitic drain - I have had my 2017 Sport go four weeks without the need to keep it on a tender, but don't know what the max time would be.

The solar panel on the dashboard will work - just need to find a connection inside the cabin that is always hot.

I wouldn't consider any recommendations/suggestion from the type of person that disputes the moon landing.
