Talk about and oil overfill !

At 15,000 I decide to change my oil since I wanted to switch to Mobil 1 0W-20. I have a 7 quart drain pan which you think would be plenty to hold 5.5 quarts of oil. I take off the drain plug and oil begins draining....as the oil level continues to rise I start to panic. Luckily, I already had another pan under the car so I place that under the draining oil and slide the full to the brim 7 quart pan out of the way and place the other pan on the floor. It continued to drain another 1.5 quarts, and this was before I took the filter off !! This was almost 9 quarts of oil in the crankcase ! Needless to say I was pissed, and my Ford dealer will be getting a "nice" visit from me Monday morning. Sorry for the "rant" but I need to get some of this out before I go to the dealer....which will be the last time I have my car serviced there.

i had my first oil change done at jiffy lube ( i was out of town and didn't want to go over 5K miles for the first change. i was very pleased w/ their service. THEN when i went to change oil, i drained it into a 6qt pan, and at one point had to put in the drain plug, empty the pan, and drain another 1qt+. i was NOT happen at that point. mileage did get better when i went to the recommended 5.5qts. Once i started buying and never burning oil in any cars over the years, checking the level is seldom done. i guess this would have been a good time to start checking, just in case.

14,000 miles , about 1 month ago.

Well the reason I asked is I can't imangine not checking my oil at least once a week and when someone else changes it I am checking it that day. That goes for anything that I have done by someone else. I pay an accountant to do my taxes but I spend time looking over his work also. We all know that the dealers or any service center can't watch over thier employies all the time. It brings me to what is called Bill C45 which makes everyone accountable. When things like this happen it is the "tech" that worked on the unit who should be held accountable by losing a days pay or coughing up the money for a free oil change. Money usually makes people pay attention. Just my 2 cents worth.

I definitely should have checked the level myself. This is the first car I have owned where I had the dealer change the oil and just assumed everything was being taken care of properly. I would like to confront the tech who actually put 9 quarts of oil in my car, punch him in his eye and take the $27.00 I spent on the oil change out of his pocket.

He probably didn't put 9 qts in he just forgot to take the old oil out.

  • 3 weeks later...

My Dealer did the same thing on another Ford vehicle - overfilled by about 2 qts = even had the excessive quantity of oil put into the motor listed on the invoice and charged for it. When I got home I checked the oil and discovered it - and the invoice charge. I slowly drove back to the dealer and had them fix it. I was livid! The way they solved the problem in 1 1/2 hours is another stupid story, since I told them I was late for as important meeting. You must have to be stupid to work in that lube section. I do my own oil now - or occasionally the Wal-Mart near by but I watch them and provide the correct quantity of oil.
