1004ron
The free flow air filters obviously allow more damaging particulate to pass through which is the most significant factor for me, but many are misled by the claims of increased power. There are other components that dictate the maximum air the engine can ingest.
garycrist
I remember some Mfg.s had an indicator to let one know when to service the filter.

I never knew it had a name, but I am familiar with the concept from my flying days in the Air Force. We would always take a plane up after it came back from maintenance and test all the equipment before the plane returned to service. There were many times I remember hearing the maintenance folks saying everything was just fine when it left here. And we would always say, "well, you shouldn't have touched it if it wasn't broke". And back and forth. Mostly in jest, but the Waddington Effect was certainly a real thing. The other funny thing I remember from those days, was "CND". We would report an issue with something, and when it came back, it would be stamped "CND". Could Not Duplicate. There were some problems that happened while the plane was in the air, but could not be duplicated or replicated on the ground. Very frustrating sometimes. Ahh, the good old days!
