Ford Remote Start Question

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am hoping someone out here can help me. I recently had the Ford Edge Remote Start 7L2Z-19G364-AA put on my wifes Edge Limited. At the time i didnt realize that this remote start would only start the car and not give us the ablility to have the heater/defroster/ac turned on. (We have the dual auto climate control) I guess i would have to get the Ford Edge Remote Start,Remote Keyless Entry & Vehicle Security 7L3Z-19G364-AA to be able to control our climate control from our house. My question is is the only difference between these two systems the Keyfob? Is it possible that i can just buy the 6 button keyfob from the remote start, keyless, etc. system and have it programmed to our current remote start. I would like to believe that the remote start module is the exact same for both systems and that the keyfobs are the only real difference but i dont know. Anyone who could help me would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Thanks for the reply. We have tried that but since we have the auto climate control it will not kick the fan on until the key is placed into the ignition and turned into the run postion. Even if we leave it in the highest fan position and have the heat turned on it still wont turn the ac or heater on until we put the key in it. Its frustrating to have remote start to warm your car up in the winter but still have to run outside and put your key in the car!!!

Thanks

Jeremy

You have to have the heat or a/c on when you shut the car off......then, when you start the car via fob, they will turn on. The defroster will not come on unless you hit the button on the dash.

I too have the auto climate control and have been looking into remote starts. That really defeats the purpose of having the remote start if you cannot turn on the heat/ a/c. I was just going by how the remote starter worked on a Grand AM GT I once owned.

Have you notified the dealer, and if so, what have they told you about these issues. BTW, how much did they charge to install the starter? Thanks.

I have talked with my dealership and the technician who installed my remote start. He didnt realize that the remote start that i got wouldnt work to turn on the auto climate control either. He has contacted his FORD rep but has not gotten a response back yet. The only thing so far that he could find out was that the remote start, keyless entry, etc. does have six buttons on the keyfob and two buttons are programmable to whatever you want them to go to. He said that they could be setup to control the climate control and such. They charged around $150.00 to install. I actually bought the remote start myself from thefordsource.com (Downs Ford) since they were WAY cheaper than what my dealer could get it for. When i told my dealership what i could buy it for $177.00 they told me to go ahead and buy it from Downs Ford because that price was almost the dealers price. Then i had my local garage install it. It does kinda such to be able to start the car but not turn the heater on to have everything all warmed up. To think that a couple years ago remote start wasnt even an option!!!

hey man... got your PM and went to reply and I accidentally hit the delete button.. eek sorry

anyway, sorry to say, I am not knowledgeable in this area. I do not follow the threads on the topic - so I am not well versed in the remote start systems - as I will never have need for one living in SoCal :) sorry I cannot help. It's one of those things for the edge I have not done.

Sounds to me like another accessory wire is all that needs to be hooked up. Thats the downfall to going to a dealership and getting the "ford" one they wont always add another relay if needed to energize all the ignition wires in this problem. They say "it cant be done unless you buy this one". Typical dealership quotes.

I will guarantee that it can be done with the unit that is in there and they are just trying to get you to upgrade. It may take more than the "so-called tech" just reading a wire guide book from ford and actually using a multi-meter.

well this is an upset....I was just going to get a rmeote start for the gf's 'Limited '08.

my main issue was the key for the edge has the buttons on it. I was hoping Ford had an intergrated starter (like my truck) and you just pput it in and then all you had to do was hit both lock AND unlock for the remote start. not the case? All I have seen is the single button keyfob from Ford. I guess thats better then getting an aftermarket setup and having ANOTHER keyfob on the keychain.

she also has dual climate and this sucks to hear...kinda defeats the whole purpose of starting it up in the winter.

I'll have to follow this thread. I was considering getting this add-on (Ford remote start) on our '07 MKX as it is one of the options it doesn't have. It lives in the garage at night but it would be nice for the wife to be able to start the vehicle at work and be able to have the heater running on the auto climate control also. If that ends up not being possible I may ditch the whole idea and save the money for something else.

Quick update on the whole remote start thread. I have a cousin who is a ford tech and i went ahead and called him last night to see what he thought about this. He told me that even the basic remote start 101 Ford system should at least mimic the last climate control settings, he couldnt remember if the defrost would work too if it was on or not, but he said something was not hooked up correctly or was never hooked up to begin with!! Anyways, he went ahead and contact a Ford Specialist that deals directly with this kinda stuff and i am just waiting for him to get back to me. Will be seeing him tomm so i got my fingers crossed. The dealership still hasnt called back but i am positive that my problem will get resolved now that i involved my cousin. Should have had him install it to begin with!!!!!! Shame on me!! So for anyone thinking of getting just the basic FORD remote, your worries are over, it should allow you to use the auto climate control as long as they hook it up correctly!! I believe i said it before but the cheapest place i found the system was downs ford (thefordsource.com), they ship incredibly fast and they offer the remote starts at near cost!! Anyways, i will keep you posted as to what eventually has to be done but i thought i would try to keep everyone in the loop.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Jeremy

Thanks. Make sure to post the results and any useful part numbers that would be helpful. I'm glad I waited and didn't get this put in when we picked up the vehicle now that I know what "can" be done. We had originally started out looking for a new Edge but ran across this young used MKX at the dealer we have purchased from for years and we got a deal too good to pass up although it was missing a few options like remote start that I would like to add so this is very helpful. I am capable of many vehicle mods but remote start systems are not something I ever want to mess with again. I'd be happy to pay the dealer to install a genuine Ford item.

The factory one can not do these extra features. You need a an aftermarket one that has extra channels on it.

One thing some will do is if you dont have the auto lift rear hatch you can use the "trunk release" output of the rremote start (if it has one) and find the wire that turns on the rear defrost and and hook it up this way.

I have the aftermarket ford remote start and auto-climate control. If I put the defrost on when I leave the vehicle at night and then use the remote start in the morning, the defrost works. When I read the booklet that came with the remote start, it indicated that there were two accessory buttons on the fob that could be programmed to operate various accessories. Specifically mentioned were the rear hatch and the rear defogger. The local dealer was able to program the rear hatch to open (note if the car is not un-locked first with the remote, the alarm goes off). However they were not able to program the rear defrost. They contacted ford and were told it was not an available option on the Edge due to the internal system programming. I assume that the remote is "universal" and that it may work on other models such as the Escape. Also according to ford the heated seats deliberately cannot be programmed to operate with the remote due to safety/product liability restraints. I can see that this could be the case due to a lack of self responsibility that is rampant in our society.

Hey Everyone,

I want to get my husband a remote start installed for x-mas. He has a 2007 ford edge with an aftermarket alarm system built in. He doesn't mind having an additional fob as he will prob just use the remote start from the house. I have no idea what to get. I want it to turn the heater/ac(auto climate controlled) on when he pushes the button and the heated seats option would be cool as well. Can someone with some experience tell me what to buy? where? who to install? I called Ford and they said it was going to be 825!!! That is crazy, right? Thanks for your help. I want to surprise him, can you tell this mod has been made? Or can I just wrap the new fob? Thanks so much!!!!

are you sure its the Ford one? it only has the 1 button on the fob correct?

anyone else?? I think its just a pain in the a$$ to have a giant useless key with buttons that are obsolete on it after getting an aftermarket remote start.

Over the weekend i just installed an autopage cs-rs915 (im a previous installer of 12 years) so the installation was not an issue. They claim it gets up to a mile of range (must be with nothing else in sight). The unit I have has extra channels so that I can activate the power lift gate, each heated seat on its own and also the rear defrost. I believe it retails for 400-500 installed at many shops. You will need a bypass module for the PATS system (chip in the key). Some shops will charge anywhere 50-100 for these.

Note for the heater and climate controls to be on when you start the car, you need to remember to turn them on to the settings you want before you exit the vehicle. I have the digital climate controls and where i leave it when i get out is where is is when i start it.

I believe that you can get a "valet" key that is the plain key without the remote build into it.
