New 20" rims installed, no tire pressure monitor (TPMS) warning?

Recommended Posts

Just put 20" Enkei rims with Bridgestone Alenzas (275/45/20) on our MKX today, and didn't even mess with the TPMS on the OE rims (just left the sensors on the old 18's), and there's no tire pressure monitor warning anywhere?

What gives, I thought this would be prominently displayed on the dash? It's as if there were no sensors in the car to begin with (and I'm pleasantly surprised).

It takes 20-25 miles of driving without the sensor(s) to 'trip' the dash panel warning display. How far was the tire shop from your house?

Ah....that explains it. I've only driven about 15 miles since the wheels were put on. It's such a major PITA (and expense) to get the new bands, remove the sensors from the OE rims and put 'em on the new ones, I think I'll just hafta live with the (forthcoming) dash warning.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Please post some pics of your MKX with the 20's.

Okay ...this is wild.

My Tire Pressure Monitor light came on the other day, after about 20 miles or so. But now it's off again, and I think I know why.

I have the 4 OE wheels/tires stacked in my garage, about 6 feet from the car. IIRC the TPMS works by IR, so that whenever I pull the car into the garage the vehicle picks up the signal from the sensors that are sitting in the wheels/tires that are stored there, thus telling the car that everything is fine.

So each time the car is parked in the garage it is reset, and I'm good for another 20 miles or so before the TPMS warning light comes on again.

Unless somebody knows another reason why this is happening, I'm guessing this theory to be correct. As long as we drive locally, I guess we'll rarely see the warning light, lol.

I seem to recall that the sensors use RFID technology and, as such, it makes sense that the OE wheels next to your car are being read by the Edge's computer.

Correct, but same idea on rickg's reason for it resetting... except for that radio frequency/infra red issue, but that's probably why it resets and gives him another 20 miles.

I asked this in another thread, but got no resoponse... The TPMS is supposed to be standard feature, my window sticker says I have it and I have the tire/! icon on the dash, but it's also supposed to be the 3rd piece of info showing up in the System Test in the Info Message Center (according toe th owner's manual)... but it doesn't show up in the Message Center System Test... Is the Owner's Manual wrong or is something not right about my Edge? Can someone else see if their System Test skips this one too?

Rickq,

Your observation is correct....but it is not the sensors that are 'resetting' the computer TPMS signal. If your car is shut off (anywhere) and is allowed to sit for 6-8 hours undisturbed the computer upon start-up will function as normal. Once it goes through its system checks again (typically the 20-25 mile range) the light will be displayed. Once the light is ON and the car is started before the 6-8 hr window the light will continue to stay ON.

So lemme get this straight ... every time the car sits for that 6-8 hour period, the system will be reset and the TPMS light won't be there?

-OR-

Once the light is on, and the car is started inside that 6-8 hour period, the light will stay on for good (even if it sits another 6-8 hours)?

That is correct...

Essentially every time you shut off the car it will need 6-8 hours to reset. After a couple of months my F150 TPMS light stays on all the time and then for no reason (regardless of time sitting) it will take the 20-25 miles of driving to 'trip' the warning light again. I have heard of some people making a PVC chamber with a valve seal on it placing the tire sensors inside and then pressurizing it to 34 lbs to fool the sensors into a false 34 lb environment. I cannot say if this is viable or not as I have not tried it but I have heard of people saying they have done it.

Thanks.

I've got an '05 Expedition with 22's on it ...the warning light has been on since the day the wheels were put on; I like this newer system better.

I too have heard of the pvc pipe with sealed ends & sensors sitting in the back of your vehicle, but it's too much trouble for me to give it a try.

Why wouldn't you just make sure the tires are inflated properly?

Stock rims replaced with 20" rims ....OE bands don't fit, therefore no sensors in new setup.

Thanks ...we wanted to give the car a little more 'muscle' with the 20" rims, but didn't wanna cheapen it or make it looked 'pimped out' either. We found those rims gave the desired effect we were looking for.

LOL, yeah ...the task of uploading pics was somewhat daunting for me, but after I found the directions it became a bit easier!

I hate to say this but....

The shop you had your tires and wheels installed at should have provided the straps at no charge.

I have actually never heard of a place charging extra for those.

My TPMS works like a dream with my 20's.

I know it's been awhile since you had posted this, but I noticed the same thing when I did a system check the other day. I fully expected tire pressure to be one of the checks, but I didn't notice it. I didn't know that it claims it does in the manual.

Anyone else have information on this?

My owner's manual (pages 102 and 103) lists what is checked and in what order. It says:

1. Doors Closed

2. Engine Temperature

3. Oil Pressure

4. Brake Fluid Level

5. Washer Fluid Level

6. Fuel Level

7. Distance to Empty

Nothing about the Tire Pressure or TPMS.

Where in your manual does it say this?

In the same place.. I must have an earlier printing of the owners manual. the must have changed the software at one point.

I've never heard of an installer supplying bands for a wheel/tire setup that was purchased elsewhere....those bands aren't really cheap.
