PTU covered by power train warranty?: (YES)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Just got a smokin deal on a 2007 Edge SEL AWD.

Then I found out why it was a smokin' deal. It's a smokin' car.

It's get the smell that I assume is the PTU leak. I had read a little about it before I got the car but now I've found lots more and I'm wondering if I want to just bring the car back and get my money back or go through and try to get it fixed.

The car is in between warranties though. The 3 year 36k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty has expired, but it's still under the power train warranty so I want to know if anyone can tell me if this would be covered under the power train warranty or if I'm just out of luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike. :D Yes, it is covered under the Powertrain Warranty (5 years/60,000 miles).

If you did not receive one when you purchased, you should download and read the Warranty Guide. You can download the Warranty Guide (along with the Owners manual and other Owner Guides) here: LINK: Ford Owner Guides

In this way, you will know your Warranty rights and coverages.

Keep us updated and good luck. :beerchug:

Hey thanks for the response and the great news (I think).

I have the warranty guide and was hoping it was part of the system that's considered the 'power train' (which is where I consider it) but didn't know just how it was being handled by most dealers.

I'll be making the call first thing in the am to get an appointment.

So far very happy with the car and the wife loves it. I was hoping this part would be covered.

Thanks again!

It's a minor repair nowadays. The seals they using now seem to be working .....

That's great to know. I was a little nervous because there are lots of threads that mention bad experiences with this (admittedly some are pretty old) and I was wondering why I got such a great deal on the AWD. Add to that the fact that the dealership apparently held it until just after the 3 year/36 month bumper-to-bumper period and I was thinking I might be in for a rough ride.

I guess my initial impression that there is just a glut of cars coming in off lease may not have been far off.

Sometimes timing and luck are on your side.

Thanks for chiming in.

Personally, I'd take it back. I know some are having luck with repairs, but I've had my 08 repaired 9 times and it is still stinking. The dealership is now pushing it off as though they can't find the leak. I'm in a similar boat with the 3/yr warranty coming off in May. I have been told by the dealership that it is covered under the 5 yr/50k. My bigger question is weather they will still ding you for diagnostic - and that is simply because I've never had a vehicle with a powertrain warranty that I've had to use. Perhaps someone can clarify that bit. All I can tell you is mine leaked 2 days after I bought it and I believed the dealership who told me they would absolutetly take care of the problem - it was no big deal. Boy was that wrong. Aside from the PTU problem - I can say I like the car, it is just that darn PTU leak makes me want to set the car on fire in the dealer's lot.

Looks like I'm one of the lucky ones!

I dropped it off yesterday first thing at the local Ford Dealership (not even the one where I bought it) with a note mentioning the smell and that there's a TSB about the PTU. I asked them not to do any work without contacting me first because I wanted to try to get it covered under the warranty.

Not a word until 4:00pm when they said: 'Your car is ready, we replaced the parts under your Powertrain warranty, you can come pick it up by 6.'

Didn't charge me a dime and also gave me a clean bill of health on their '20 point check up' or whatever that is where they check the tires, breaks, oil and fluids and stuff.

The receipt says which parts were covered and mentions the TSB they did the warranty under.

No muss, no fuss. Now I guess I'll wait to see if the problem returns but I was really glad it was part of the 5/50 powertrain deal because it means I've still got a year and plenty of miles to see if it comes back.

Thanks everyone!

Sounds great! I hope it works out for you. Mine is going in this morning for their 10th attempt at repair...

Just bought an AWD 07 edge in Mississauga Ontario CA. Low KMS, beautiful car. Noticed the smell when I stop at a light. Took it in yesterday, they said it was dry as a bone underneath. I have the premium esp to 95k. Does any body know if they re-engineered this seal so it actually works properly. Is it possible to find dealer repair records on this vehicle to see if this has been repaired before. I've only had the car a few days and I think I can return it within 30 days if not satisfied. Before I bought the car I had it written into the deal that the oil leak would be fixed. At that point I thought it was something simple.....

Good idea getting that in writing - I didn't and just got mine back from 11th repair. There has been many iterations of the seal, it is a design problem. Best way to tell if it has been repaired multiple times for PTU or anything else is to do an OASIS report. That will tell you of any work done at a dealer. I hope yours gets fixed.

Sounds like you definitely have the problem.

Mine has been fine ever since the warranty repair. No smell at all, running great.

I think all dealer service shows up on a carfax report, at least it did on mine and that's how I knew this hadn't been done before I got mine.

Someone else had trouble getting this taken car of as a warranty item either in Europe or Canada, I forget where (read it a while ago). I hope you don't have an issue because you're not in the states.

From what I've read (and experienced) the fix was discovered/implemented in Feb of 2010 and now it's no big deal. A combination of the right seals and (more importantly) the right tools turned out to be the key. If you look at the TSB it says that use of a prybar or any tool other than the one specified will definitely cause problems and require repeat service.

IMO, this one might be worth driving a bit to get it covered by a dealer experienced in this repair and willing to do it for you under warranty.

Good luck!

I'm chiming in as I had the same issue/symptoms on my 2007 Edge about a month ago (57,000km).

When driving the car highway or on the move everything was fine. But I noticed when city driving (especially in stop and go traffic) this burning smell would come into the cabin. I googled the symptoms and sure enough I received a ton of returns on this 'PTU leak issue'. I booked my car into my local mechanic and sure enough he confirmed the PTU was leaking. Although not leaking enough to leave any evidence of fluid on the driveway. Basically the fluid drips directly onto your exhaust, burns, and voila smell filters into the cabin.

My mechanic didn't charge anything to get it up on the hoist and look at it. He recommended I take it back to Ford and see if they would cover it under power train warranty. The same day I dropped the car off at Weiland Ford in Kitchener, ON. Once the issue was confirmed by the ford tech the repair was covered 100% under the power train warranty.

Its been a month and no sign of further issues - although I have read on other forums this issue is known to re-occur in some cases. I'm hoping I don't have this stroke of luck.

Hope that helps.

..Liam

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 4 years later...

I have brought my 08 Ford Edge brand new and have been fighting with Ford Since 21k miles over PTU seals. I have had 4 replaced and a new transfer case. Started having transmission issues jumping, thuding into gear, hard shifting, etc. since 39k miles. Some resulted in dangerous situations including almost getting run over by a tractor trailer on the interstate when the whole transmission went out at 80k miles. I have since replaced the transmission with a new/remanufactored one with a cost of $4000.00 and have had it a week now and showing signs of another leaking PTU seal. HUNK OF JUNK!!! and with no assistance from Ford Service what so ever.

Going car shopping this weekend and will NEVER buy another Ford EVER!!!
