  1. 2000 Miles in and I'm sitting between 20.6 - 21 mpg. Thats milking it too, cruise control as much as possible and not stomping on the pedal, window sticker claimed 18-25.

That sounds about right. Would you mind posting what your average MPH was for the same period? I'm guessing that you are doing faster than city speeds but slower than a full 65MPH average.

The way I think about it, if you want to get that 25 or 27 MPG rating (EPA estimate) to come true, you need to AVERAGE highway speeds. If you do ANY idling or city driving, that will go down.

  2. I have read there are differences in Edges depending on when they were built. I have been presented a sticker with the date of 1/28/11. Should I be concerned about buying this one? Thanks.

Honestly, I would go for a Job 2 vehicle if you are buying a 2011. They did several enhancements including a redesign of the roof structure to bring the Rollover strength to 4.7x the vehicle weight where it was 3.5x before. Also, the quieter side mirrors were introduced during Job 2.

In fact, if I were to buy right now, I'd wait for the 2012. New side indicator mirrors (blinkers a la Explorer), extra baffling in the D pillars, AND the doors are installed with these super high tech laser guided robots that can get it within 1/10 of a millimeter of where it is supposed to be mounted.

  3. Ewww. And guessing it doesn't match the rest of the windows?

Precisely. The other windows just compound that fact. I try not to look through both windows at the same time.

As for carbonedge+'s comment, he was saying that Carbon Metallic is the best color EVER! and it was only available in '07.

  4. Thanks for the additional feedback. I'm wondering too if MFT would be more stable if it didn't have to run NAV?

Honestly, I don't see the value that I paid for.

I pay nothing to Google and the Maps on my phone are fantastic. Maybe Microsoft/Ford should start serving ads when you shut of the vehicle. That way they'll have revenue and not have to resort to this NavTeq crap.

    (I kid, I kid) poke.gif

  5. Kelly Bluebook says my trade should be 21,300. Edge SEL's with twice as many or more miles are selling for 25-27k. Mine is extra clean, still under warranty. Still smells new. So I think it is better than a garden variety auction car.

Dealer is going to try to make money on you. Whether from the car or from the trade in.

If you don't like the trade-in ... go elsewhere to sell it, and then come back and give them the loot for your new Edge.

Try a CarMax if you want to see a comparable rate for selling to a "dealer". They'll give you a quote that's good for 7 days. Otherwise, sell it yourself.

  6. If you have MyFord Touch, then you dont have to scroll thru the menus to select a certain song. Use the voice command "USB, play track ___" or "USB, play artist ___"

PS - I use my iPhone for the iPod functions. Works flawlessly with MFT.

That sure works if I remembered every track name, or number or artist etc.

I have plenty of music where the artists are collaborating and saying " Play Jay-Z" doesn't always bring ALL of Jay-Z's songs up.

I end up using my phone quite a bit as I can scroll to my heart's content with a flick of a finger.

  7. I have a Sprint Blackberry and the phone problem is very intermittent, maybe once every week or two. The dealer says the phone should work and the Service Manager has told me I should pursue legal action, whether through BBB or a lawyer.

According to the Ford engineer I met with, it should not take a minute and a half to start up. At times, before 2.11, it was 2 minutes or more. He would not give a definite time, but said 30 seconds is more reasonable.

What about the Nav card fault?

Anybody with experience on how long for BBB to make a decision? Through a lemon lawyer?

Don't get me started on the Nav car fault... that's my most common issue with the system. I'm going back down to Orange to let them work on it one more time. Hopefully they can convince me to keep my lease with a working MFT.

I'm sooo itchy to see what 3.x will bring.

  8. Well I don't know what's up with Louisiana, because they are extremely popular. Lots of people have them, and the government/police didn't seem to mind. Our governor just signed a bill that outlawed them and allows police to pull you over and ticket you for them, and it takes effect next week. Maybe they're just starting to enforce it; I'm not sure. But I know that until now HIDs were fine in the state of Louisiana.

They're typically ignored everywhere just like other popular but not DOT legal mods like smoked headlamps and taillamps and wiring fogs to stay on with brights.

My guess is some lawmaker had a problem and decided to make it a state law.

I don't see how they will pull you over in an Edge since the base Halogen lights are also constructed with Low/High projectors. I think that legislation would be more apt to apprehending drivers that put HID kits into reflector based housings.

  9. The Bi Halogen projector on the Sport does a decent job with HID kits. +1 for the Sport

Also forgot the Special leather seats are a nice plus and the lack of the fake wood is nice too. +1 for the Sport

And apparently you can get the Driver Package with the Sport. Guess I was wrong.

Don't forget to take a look at the Tow Package on the Limited as pointed out by Wilson.

  10. Here are a couple of photos. July '11 build date on this Edge.

New design. They must be saving some money with the integrated unit. I think that the fabrication of that weld had to cost something versus a single unit that has the split constructed into the thing.

There could be other things involved too since extra external welds means chances for leaks etc.

  11. Took a 1500 mile trip in my 2011 Edge Limited, Fuel economy was 27.6 MPG average. But had a strange problem with the brakes, seemed like there was a delay in the braking from pressing the brake pedal to when the brakes start activating. At one place almost got in an accident, coming out of gas station and pressed the brakes at STOP sign but car kept roling and then finally stopped. Anyone has experienced similar issue?

    Thanks

Not at all. To me, the Edge brakes have great grab and feel. There's a tiny spot where the car knows it's braking before the friction actually occurs, but I have to try in order to find it. I think it was designed like this to allow you to do some light engine braking on grades.

But in general, I don't ever feel that the car keeps rolling if I command a stop.

Were you maybe trying to do a finesse stop? Or maybe something was on the rotors such as oil? If not, I would have the dealer look at the brakes to see if they might have air in the lines.

  12. ...for a 2008 Edge. Several magnitudes of a trade in the upward direction. The edge is more comfortable, far more quiet, and has tons of room. We just went on a ten-day sail up and down Long Island Sound. Everything we needed to bring to the boat fit in the Edge. If I still had the Jetta we would have had to take two vehicles with all the gear we needed to bring. Oh, and I only had the Jetta for two months.

    Cheers,

    Bob

    Congrats!

    Sail on!

  13. :happy feet:

Another GREAT product on the market is a product called Nano Diamond Shield. I used it on our cars 4 months ago, and when I wash it, or it rains, the water beads up like crazy. The website is 'WWW.NANODIAMONDSHIELD.COM'. It is guaranteed to last for 12 months. There are video's on it, shows how it works. I googled it, and many people raved about the product. A member of this forum, Richy, has a product called Cquartz, that he swears by, also another member Edgieguy. My only complaint, is that I have free time on my hands. Before, using regular carnuba waxes, I would do our cars every 6-8 weeks, now I haven't touched them in 4 months, using N.D.S. ! You can buy it online at their website, but you can get it cheaper at Pep Boys or Advanced Auto Store. I first used it on my '06 Explorer (Dark Stone), which I plan to replace with a '12 MKX, then, when I saw the results, and how EASY it was to apply and wipe off, I did my wife's MKS ( Cinnamon ). The only suggestion I have, is, if a car hasn't been waxed for a while, is to first go over it with a wax with a cleaner in it ( I used Meguires cleaner wax ), to remove any embedded dirt. This stuff really seals the paint, and one hell of a job on the windows, and wheels. LOL with what ever you choose.

    Joe

haha... you'll find all kinds of things to coat with this crap.

I used UPGP on my shower mirror and it's awesome. The thing still fogs, but one pass with the water nozzle and everything sheets off. No more missed spots while shaving

  14. You just made me remember the word I was looking for-muddy. Some pics make the color look muddy, sort of khaki.

That word would describe this new tint I got on the front windows this weekend. I ask the guy to match it and trusted him. After driving around for a day, everything out my window looks muddy. mad.gif

  15. My 2007 edge never gets past 20.2 mpg on the highway, no matter how careful I use the gas pedal.

I think that number of 26 mpg highway is just baloney!

Btw, what is this "average MPH" thing? My wife saw something like 33 MPH the other day and didn't really understand what that meant. Neither do I.

    Can some offer an explanation?

    Thanks,

    Ed

Average MPH is average speed. If you are averaging city speeds, expect city MPG.

If you hit a trip on which you average 50MPH, expect Highway MPG.

33MPH = city driving or slightly better. It's definitely not real highway speed. Either you don't spend as much time on the Highway as you believe or you idle your car for long periods bringing your averages down.

I get a combined 20.2 right now, but I drive in LA Rush Hour and average about 30-35MPH

  16. The size of the wheel should make no difference on the dyno, though it will make a difference in acceleration times.

What this result tells me is that your CAI and exhaust are doing more harm than good. If you can get that much improvement from some simple tuning, then it means it was really screwed up to start with.

    Are you kidding?

On a "roll-on" type dyno it sure makes a difference. Again, I will say... Rotational Interia. Explain that one.

Strap a 25 lb weight to each wheel the next time you dyno it if you think it won't make difference.

  17. I cannot decide between the Edge Sport or Limited. I want the Sport due to the suspension package and black grill and stronger engine. I don' like the shiny grill on LTD and I am concerned about the 22" tires of the Sport (e.g., more expensive to replace plus crapper ride and crapper in the snow). I like the 3.7 compared to the 3.5 but according to some other sites the 3.5 is faster. Oh and since I live in Minnesota, I need/want all wheel drive.

The 22s look nice but aren't as practical in the snow and I would be fine with 20s but I can only get 22s on the Sport. What is the difference between the lights and the tail lamps between the Sport and LTD? I can't see difference like commented on some websites.

Also is it worth it to wait until next month or so to get the 2012? Online, I can't find any changes. If there are upgrades or changes, I am willing to wait the couple of months. So going back to the 3.5 or 3.7, I understand the weighted wheels and AWD on the Sport makes more of a drag even with the extra hp.

SO which one? Sport or Limited? PS I will have mine loaded up regardless.

    Good questions.

I stuck with the Limited for several reasons. (These were all personal reasons)

    1) MPG. 1 mile might not be much to some people, but for some reason it made a difference in my head. And if you get AWD, you're already coughing up 1 MPG.

    2) Performance. Yes, the Sport is slower due to the Behemoth 22s. Don't get me wrong, they look amazing and if I could afford a second set of show-off rims, I would opt for some. My analogy is a Maria Sharipova vs a Pam Anderson. You'll get LOTS of looks either way, but Pam will get more double takes at the beach. But take them both to the an athletic outing and you'll see where the Big Guns can get in the way.

    3) Ride. The ride of 22's will be a "bit" less comfortable, even with the highly tuned suspension bits.

    4) I wanted the Driver's Entry Package.

What I wanted and had to do without:

    1) 3.7 L Mustang engine (It just has a nice ring to it; Saying you got a Mustang V6 with 300 ponies has got to be a smile maker)

    2) Sport body pieces ( The matched body pieces look amazing [ I think an aftermarket solution will be available eventually])

    3) 22" wheels look amazing.

    4) Blacked out grille

I loved the idea of the blacked out grille, but wanted to be a bit different, so I wrapped it in black vinyl (DIY, never wrapped anything previously)

As far as Model Year goes, you're in the position to get the better vehicle, so I would suggest waiting. There's some changes in the 2012 that I would like on my car including the extra baffling in the D pillars for extra quieting and the turn signal mirrors like the Explorer.

In the end, it's up to what you value between all these differences. Good luck with your choice and welcome!

  18. I'm not surprised at all.

Those 22" wheels not only weigh about 25-30 lbs heavier each, but the moment of inertia has changed as well. Think about strapping a 25 lb. dumbbell to a 18" chrome clad and what kind of effect that would have.

NOW think about that 25lb. weight spread out over the whole rim versus stuck on just the hub. (eg 5 x 5lb weights all around the barrel)... The rotational inertia that the engine needs to overcome before your wheels start to move is MASSIVE.

It explains why the Sport is NOT the quickest Edge from factory.

EDIT: BTW thanks for posting this. Very interesting to know that 40 ponies can be squeezed out of the 3.7L ... I wonder what kind of gains can be made with the 3.5L

  19. You indicate that you are not the only one driving the vehicle?

What's the average MPH you are logging? if its not more than 25 MPH, don't expect good MPG; expect average. And if you average 10-15 MPH, don't expect anything and be happy with what you get.
