  1. Very nice with the over the edge thing!! The all weather mats that we got from the factory have been useful. We went camping and had some mud coming back in with us, washed right off when the mats were removed - very helpful. I also enjoy the auto dimming mirror that came standard as i always hate getting lit up by badly adjusted lights behind me. Dont really need the compass or temperature as its in the dash display, but the homelink might be good when we get a garage. Cargo Logic - velcro blocks stop things moving on top of the waterproof mat. The mat wasnt quite a perfect fit, not sure why. There is about an inch of extra material that makes one end of the other ride up a bit (we chose that end to be at the seat back rather than by the lock. The mat is rubber backed, so its certainly waterproof, there is a 1/2-inch high lip running around the sides that makes it a mini bathtub to contain spills, outside that is another 1/2-inch horizontal rim that sits on the trunk floor just like the main part of the mat. We have pushed in the edge that is beyond the lip to try to fit it in, tucked the flat outside the lip under the plastic where possible, but still there is a bit of a wrinkle by the back seat. The blocks seem to stick pretty sturidly. The instructions suggest not putting in anything that could tip (ie higher than wide), so pack with a low center of gravity if you can. The velcro seemed to stick pretty well, i havent tried with any large objects yet, only with my hands. Overall it will serve its purpose if only it was properly sized for the trunk area. Exposed lug wheel locks were easy to change out with the regular lugs, maybe 5 mins to do all 4 wheels, just gotta keep the key in with the jack!! Front wheel splash guards came in the same package we received yesterday, however we are going to wait til the weekend to get down and dirty on the ground to install them. Roofrack cross bars also came, but we wont install those until we need them. I should hope it takes less than 30 mins to do the four sets of mounts! I am used spending 5 mins installing the aftermarket Thule or Yakima ones on various cars i have, its nice to have the roofbars already in place to work with. I also have yet to test the new bars with the kayak carrier J's - hopefully they fit or else they go to eBay or the local rag. Rear bumper scuff protection - a clear strip of protective material to prevent scuffs scratching up the paintwork. We got this in the package, it was a cinch to put in once you line up the pieces. The look is very nice, a little grip to it, certainly covers most of the bumper top. It also has Edge written across the center. With the three valleys between the 4 peaks of the textured part, it is possible to trap very small air bubbles. We are going to deflate those with a very fine needle. The other scuff protection we applied on the door sills matches the grain of the plastic on the doors and such as well as the shade of black used and somewhat the rear scuff protection strip, it just doesnt have Edge written on it, but i guess you cant have everything! I didnt see fog lights as accessories (so far). Do you have a space in the front where you could put them mounted as the regular fog lights? I am glad that i have the fog lights, we get plenty of fog here and i like to use the front and rear lights which dont appear to be legally required for safety - like it is in other countries, which is a shame as they are really quite useful at those times. I also like the rear wash/wipe, again not a requirement in this country to keep the rear view clear, certainly works 1000x better than the rear deicer that most people seem to use to "melt" the water off - or at least heat it up to get it moving down the rear screen.
  2. There are a few websites around, as well as the dealers themselves who are offering a variety after sales (i wouldnt call them aftermarket as many are genuine Ford parts) accessories for the Edge (i assume the MKX as well). We ordered a few of them and will be installing them later this week or on the weekend. I will offer up reviews later as i get them on and have a chance to use them. Here are the ones i have found, most are in the booklet you can get from the dealer. Some are hard to come by due to demand, others are in stock at various places: All weather mats - as well as coming from the factory that way Cloth mats - the all weathers from the factory also come with these mats or you can buy another set Remote start Auto dimming mirror with or without compass, temperature or homelink - cant see the point as the compass is already in the dash and the factory mirror also dims Ash tray/coin holder and lighter Cargo Logic - velcro blocks stop things moving on top of the waterproof mat Trip tunes advanced - put your iPod in the glovebox (not the sync system) Mobile ease - hands free bluetooth Wheel locks - exposed or hidden lugs Bug guard - for leading edge of hood Splash guards - only for front wheels as rears have a bit of one already Roof rack - if you didnt get one factory fitted Cross bars - for the roofrack Rear bumper scuff protection - a clear strip of protective material to prevent scuffs scratching up the paintwork We got the roofrack from the factory and wanted to add the cross bars (which arent included in the factory issued car). We already had the cloth and all weather mats, the mirror already auto dims and we dont have a garage, the temperature is also shown on the climate control unit under the ext button. We did buy the cargo logic (would like to see how that works out), the wheel locks (for our new chrome), splash guards (to protect the bodywork when driving down dirt etc) and also the rear bumper scuff protector (always putting something in there). We also bought a couple of extra aftermarket generic items such as scuff protection on the door sills (that 2-3" wide strip of metal outside the frame) that people seem to want to step on and scratch up rather than on the plastic already put in place. We also bought some edging for the doors (put on each side door and the trunk) so that if we are near a wall or something there is a little more protecting those edges than just paint. We bought that trimming in black to match the other black features, and from a distance you cant see it, up close it silhouettes the doors, i feel that the blazing copper metallic is highlighted by the lines. So what have others done, i heard of some additional lights elsewhere. Has anyone bought these features and do they have a review on any of them?
  3. We ordered it a couple of weeks ago, and it finally came in, should be installing this week/weekend. I always have stuff rolling around in the back, so hopefully this will help with that. I often carry wet stuff as well, so a little extra protection should also help.
  4. After reading your OP, i have to say that i didnt really think about the MKX as an option thinking it was too expensive. So i went to check it out, even though i already have my Edge. Dont like the front or back styling, nor the interior tweaks - wood trim is fine, but the rest looks way too much. A bit older looking, however i am in the target market for the Edge, just about 30 yrs old, recently married, kids on the way in a few years, wanting something for the road and dirt trails, hauling a few things around, but reasonable economy for the regular commute - dead center of that demographic! There are some nice tweaks on the MKX that would be cool, auto tailgate, cooled seats and wood grain, but not worth the extra cash in my mind. I paid $31k for the Edge with practically everything on it bar nav, DVD and vista roof and couldnt see myself spending an additional $6-8k on the Lincoln nameplate and those few extras with the downside of the styling.
  5. The dealership came back with a few answers to my questions. The premium items are checked with each maintenance and replaced when showing enough wear, however i didnt get specifics on how thin a wearable item might get or such info. The item doesnt have to fail, but should be worn enough to require replacement in the immeadiate future. They did mention that the item could still fail between maintenance if it wasnt showing enough signs of wear to warrant replacement, but that is a given. Usually with things like wiper blades and brakes, the shop is always telling me to get them replaced - not sure if that will be the same when they have to bear the cost of those replacements though! Maintenance including spark plug replacement, transmission fluid changes (however i was wrong on the PCV valve change) and such is scheduled to be done according to the specs and as we are going for the shorter timeframe 5k, that would mean more frequent changes of most items for only a little extra cash ($3-400 i think over 6 years). We are going to buy this maintenance plan when we take the car in for its first oil change at 5k - the first one is on the dealer regardless. It seems like a good deal, no-one has mentioned anything on here or the other two forums that i subscribe to.
  6. After the little experiment this week and general 80/20 city/highway driving i came out with 17.7mpg, the computer calc'd around 18.0 - dont know if all the computers are calibrated so closely. Even though its not exactly what i get at the pump, you can see if you are edging up the numbers while you drive. Overall so far logged on that fuel economy (for some reason it wont let me share the info - already wrote to them) site is about 1230 miles for 62.52 gal (19.67 mpg) to date, which splits up to about 73% city and 27% highway.

    MPG??????

I was just trying an experiment as our other poster Jimmerz did to see what difference it made for him. Not making any accussations about driving habits, just stating what i did to see what mileage i could get. Again, driving habits are one reason it could be, hills, amount of stopping and starting/idling time is usually a huge factor too, also the winter fuel mix is not as rich meaning lower mpg too, not to mention running the peripheral items such as heating or AC! All i am saying is given temperate, flatish moderate city driving you can hit that. There has to be some reason others arent getting it, be it user or environmental issues. Sorry that people arent getting the mileage they thought they would or wanted.
  8. Cant recall what it said, but there is a piece in the manual about how long to drive after increasing the pressure, or else there might be an indication of another issue. Read your manual and go from there, worst case deal with the dealer to get it turned off or see what the issue is if following the instructions doesnt work for you.

    MPG??????

Two things, my trip computer seems to be within 0.2mpg of the calculation after i have filled up (which of course includes a 1/3 gal at most top up to reach the next dollar even, which of course isnt quite the same gas as i used), so not much error there. Also, just for shits and giggles i spent a couple of days driving as near to "like i stole it" as i could given traffic and also a few other bad habits - quick starts, got the engine up to 6250rpm on a few of them - although i got to 60mph quite quickly fairly often on slower roads, going 10+ over the speed limit, quick lane changes and punching it to overtake, coasting and then speeding up when traffic was all going about the same speed and no gaps were available. Basically all the stuff i dont do on a regular basis. I cut it back a little around my neighbourhood, first because people live there and second its cobblestoned and i dont want to shake any car to death rumbling over that at 30+, just took quick starts from each stop sign. The funniest part was that i didnt get home or to work any quicker than usual at practically the same traffic volume. The computer pumps out that i was doing 14.5mpg, so its got to have been in the 14-15 range taking into account some measurement error. The same trips on my usual run give me 19-20+/- mpg. So yes i can practically match the kinds of numbers coming out here, but i have to drive in a way that would get me either a fistful of tickets or a wreck within a reasonable timeframe and made me feel like a jackass to my fellow road users! I have about 1300 miles so far, still not fully broken in, but i cannot justify racing around all day like i am in a sports car as there was no saving of time, only wasting gas and feeling somewhat hot under the collar aboutt the slow folks on the road whilst i was trying this little experiment. Cruising around saves me a bunch of money and is less likely to get me in any bother with the law or the wrecker/insurance. That doesnt mean i dont use the great acceleration on the Edge when needed to pass someone, just dont try to pass everyone in one go! BTW - if the computer is calculating mpg wrongly, surely that means either the volume calculation is wrong or the speed/distance is not being correctly measured. Seeing as the distance is used for the manual calc as well, then the volume is the only variable. I have noted that the tank is not completely filled when gassing up, but i havent pushed the gas in the tank to less than 10 miles from empty yet either - does it go negative? Yet to put more than 18.5 gal in the 20.8 gal tank on a fill up given when the pump cuts out. On my last car i could squeeze at least 1-1.5 more gals in there after the cutoff by topping up, but even that wouldnt cut it.
  10. Still waiting for my cross bars to come in. There seems to be a lack of certain supplies out there. I might have liked to have the vista roof if it could have been mounted with the crossbars, but unfortunately that didnt seem to be an option. Not sure how the roof structure might have supported or not supported it.
  11. The "invoice" prices are on msn autos or edmunds or cars direct or other such sites: http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/pricing....e&trimid=-1 http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/ford/edge/...size/index.html http://www.carsdirect.com/buildyourcar/zip...amp;modelid=613 Most of them have a calculator showing the invoice and MSRP prices of each component you are interested in and all of them list the MSRP and "invoice" price of each trim without the extras. The price that they wont tell you, only Consumer Reports seems to sell that info ($14 to get that info), if the holdback price which is below the "invoice" price, ie what the dealer is most likely paying - buying in bulk they can get even more of a deal. The dealer is going to go in with whatever price they reckon is reasonable. There are also some credits available and other discounts slowly working into the market that the dealers can use, i dont know if the price on Ford includes that or the dealer is holding that back to use as another bargaining piece. I would do some more research if i were you, regarding which features, the range of costs that the car could go for with that price and dont limit it to just Ford sites or what the dealer suggests.
  12. There are two invoice prices, the advertised one you can find on Edmunds/MSN/whoever, and the dealer invoice which is less than the advertised invoice by a figure known as a holdback. I think the holdback on the SE's is something near $500, as you go up the trims, the holdback gets somewhere near $900. The holdback is typically is about 2-4% or so of the car value before adding in the extras. That is why they can offer you "invoice" pricing and still make some profit on the deal. As far as i am aware, the holdback is a time-limited feature to encourage the dealer to sell the models within a certain time period. Those that have been on the lot a while, the dealer might have paid that holdback back, in the case of the Edge's that doesnt seem to be an issue! I wouldnt try to beat a dealer down below this bottom line dealer invoice price as they probably wouldnt make a penny on the car - everyone is in business after all! Allow them some room for profit, just not the usual margin that they get off Joe Public paying MSRP. We had a good deal, this X-plan thing sounds like a great deal we didnt know about before, but i didnt think they were generally offering prices quite that low yet on a relatively new car! We have quite a shortage of Edge's on the lots here, so given the demand, the general selling price has been only a little under MSRP from what i have seen/heard in a few places.
  13. So if i am beating the EPA now, in the future i'll beat it by more. I only had one fill up this weekend, did 405 miles on 20.5 gallons (1 of those was a quick top up in an expensive area to get me home for a cheaper full fill up) which is about 19.7mpg. This was about 150 miles in the city, 100 miles highway, 50 miles slow going around campsites and off road and another 100 on country roads through small towns. Half of the highway and country road driving was my wife as well, she has a heavier foot than me though in all the cars we have driven together. The overall so far in the 917 miles in 44.85 gals ~ 20.4mpg with about 60/40 split highway/city, its still going up every week it seems for the same commute. Hoping its still being broken in if 3k miles is the estimate.
  14. Just found a couple of very small nicks in the passenger seat, havent seen them before, so they might be ours. The only thing up with ours on delivery was the weatherstripping on the passenger window - they said they would replace it, but havent done so yet, intend to call them next week to discuss.
  15. I have seen the ad all of once, hardly shown on tv from what i have seen, we also TIVO and fast forward past quite a few ads, so that might be where i missed it.
  16. As noted above, the difference is about 3%, it makes a little difference over the life of the car, but in the grand scheme of things pretty similar. Assuming that the sidewalls arent shorter (which to be honest 60% of 245 vs 65% of 235, 6mm per wheel wall is not much again), the extra size would allow the tire to roll over a bump a little easier than a smaller tire which would kind of bump into it and kind of bump over it as it tried to roll past it - think of the size of the object versus the wheel size. You can notice the difference in 14 to 18" wheels say moving over a 1" high bump, the difference between 17 and 18" wheels might not be so pronounced.
  17. Both the Extended Warranty and Maintenance Plan have the ESP written in the title, i want to know about the maintenance, not the warranty. As for the US car thing, Ford seems to have a bad rep over here for being unreliable. The previous 3 Fords i owned in the UK were all great cars, but they are known for quality over there, i heard otherwise over here. As for cars 82 Ford Fiesta, 89 Ford Escort, 95 Ford Escort (no problems on any of these), 01 Nissan Sentra (probably as many if not more problems than you found with the 90 Accord - i almost pushed it into the dealership to trade) and most recently 05 Honda Accord (again a great car, probably fixed a few of the things since 1990) for my wife and now the 07 Ford Edge for me. She also drove a Honda Civic (95?) which she said she had no issues with. I wanted to buy a Ford, this particular one, i just want to cover my backside if the reliability is as i have heard of other Ford models, that is why i have bought the Geico extended warranty. However i am debating whether the price and coverage of the maintenance plan (also ESP designated) is good enough to take it rather than paying as i go on maintenance. My questions relate to whether there is an option to go without the premium wear items coverage, if the replacements are hard to come by due to their policies and also whether other people have tried and have any comments about these types of plans on other cars.
  18. You can always use the parking brake on the left and give it some gas on the right before releasing, which would treat it like a stick hillstart. We dont have hills around here, but i have lived in extremely hilly areas in the past (in fact i miss that scenery, but not the gas mileage!) and that is the way a hillstart should be done rather than holding on the clutch. Automatics are a new thing to me over the last 5-6 years and rarely in hills so i am not 100% on the protocol, but that is the way i approached it when i had a hand parking brake, the foot pedal one seems to work about the same though.
  19. Glad it finally arrived. So are you going to swap out the rims/tires?
  20. Still getting good numbers down here, however when the heat comes and the AC goes on, who knows what will happen. Hopefully the roads will clear up a little when the snowbirds go home and i can get a little more speed in the city/stop-go traffic on the highway. Started with 176 on the clock when i bought my Edge. So far it was 17mpg on the first fill up, 100 miles or so of city traffic, just under 6 gallons. Road trip 22.5mpg on second fill up, approx 350 miles highway and 50 city (although that was really slow) - 400 miles on the tank and then some still in reserve as i only topped off at 18.3 gallons. Third fill up to come this weekend after another week of city driving, numbers on the guage say i am getting just over 19mpg for the same driving as the first week, again just over 100 miles and still more than 3/4 full, probably around 6-7 gallons tomorrow for around 120-130 miles. Fourth fill up likely at the end of the week after we take another road trip to go camping.
  21. Sometimes It only took 5 mins to find the info and then do the calc's.
  22. We didnt order, i didnt want to wait that long as my current car was literally falling apart, it almost did by the time we got it to the dealer to trade in, but after jumping it again - it made it there. So we were looking through inventories of various car dealers and like i said and that was the only feature we didnt get from our list. The MSRP on it on order or factory fitted before delivery is 65, its somewhere in the mid-upper 50's invoice (58 maybe springs to mind), but it was quoted as $300 after market through Ford if you didnt get it as part of the original package. Roofbars are similarly 81/95 from the factory and 200+/- aftermarket, the list goes on.
  23. The aftermarket service is our insurance carrier, a national company, so if it goes out of business we also dont have that insurance either. I feel ok about doing, maybe i'll live and learn, maybe it'll work out ok. I dont know if we are talking across purposes here, i was asking about the maintenance plan, i only mentioned the extended warranty thing in passing. Thanks for your advice on the warranty though, i appreciate the time spent writing it. I will continue to try to find info about the plan and see what others have said/done about it and any issues found to date.
  24. Sorry to hijack this thread with the X-plan talk. Thanks for the info, while i might have spent a little extra this time around, i'll look into this next time! The dealer invoice (according the the Consumer Reports bottom line - after holdbacks) with all the options we have would have been $30,407 (MSRP $33,470) plus taxes etc, we ended up after the price offered by the dealer to get it brught down from Atlanta, rebates/credits and such for $31,000 plus taxes, which our trade in paid for (they paid over the book value for that as well) and then some, not so bad for now, next time it'll be a little lower.
  25. Whilst the brakes feel a little soft on a gentle touch, just enough to drop a little speed when required, they stop quite quickly enough with a little extra pressure. Mileage is probably about right for the speed you were doing (80+/- with the rest in the city etc). It does get better at a slightly slower speed as well, between 60-70 is where you can easily hit the EPA numbers (plus keeping the speed relatively constant).
