Because the OEMs have to meet FMVSS regulations.

You hook it up to the dealer computer.

There are 4 holes on the back of the airbag, you need to stick something through them and release the clips that hold the module in place. You do know that the ABS module has to be recalibrated if you install a new steering angle sensor, right? Also the clockspring is very delicate , you must follow the proper procedures to align it and keep it from rotating. You really ought to get yourself a copy of the shop manual before attempting this job,

AWOL Nav in my new 2011 Limited?????
Waldo replied to HotLap's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
I'm sure the software is the issue. Just get the update done, you'll be glad you did. -
There is no hardware needed, just the SD card. But you have to find someone who can figure out how to reprogram the system with the Nav software. Essentially you have to "hack" the system as Ford has not made it available for dealers to do.

Have them perform the software update per the TSB. -
Turn by Turn Navigation in Canada
Waldo replied to Hockey87's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
I think it's all related to licensing and availability of data. Travel Link - which is also separate from Sync services, is also not available in Canada. -
Have you found a forum for the various Japanese cars that has as much activity as this forum and they are not reporting problems?

Does 11 Edge trailer hitch option add a transmission cooler?
Waldo replied to trockli's topic in Mods & Tech
The Edge uses a "combo cooler", where the transmission cooler and A/C condenser are all the same part. The top half is the trans cooler and the bottom half is the condenser. So all Edges come from the factory with a trans cooler, but unless you really follow the lines, you would never notice it. -
Turn by Turn Navigation in Canada
Waldo replied to Hockey87's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
Sync Services is not available in Canada. One of the features of Sync Services is turn-by-turn directions. However if you order the Navigation system, that is not part of Sync Services and will so it provide turn-by-turn directions. -
Well that should certainly be enough to trigger the warning. Have you tried dropping the pressure in one tire below 20psi to see if the warning comes on? It should come on right away, no need to drive with low pressure.

Of course not. That's why Ford manages brake (not break, please) failures to much less than 5%. Ford also spends more money on critical systems like brakes and steering to reduce the failure rate. They spend comparably less on convenience features like MFT. Would I be comfortable knowing that my car's brakes had a 95% chance of working? No way. Would I be comfortable knowing that my bluetooth connection had a 95% chance of working? Absolutely.

Ford (and every manufacturer of any goods) ship products knowing that a certain percentage of them will be defective. This isn't the aerospace industry, you don't need to spend the money to build parts that are so tight on tolerances that there is 0% chance any of them will fail. This is the way business is done, it's all about managing the statistics. Ford might have underestimated the failure rate (based on testing and predictions) but that doesn't make it a scam.

How many miles have you driven in those 2 weeks?

2011 FORD EDGE SYNC DEFECTS vs Japanese Auto Makers
Waldo replied to pinkedge's topic in 2011 Edge & MKX
Seriously? Ford has swept much worse issues under the rug than this. -
Ford should SYNC themselves for selling 2011 Edge with known problems.
Waldo replied to pinkedge's topic in 2011 Edge & MKX
Ford's built over 30,000 Edges and 1 sitting in a dealer for 4 weeks is not a significant problem in the big picture. It certainly doesn't lend evidence to any kind of scam. -
I don't see the connection between your dealer screwing up the repair on one vehicle and a huge corporate scam. If they were all defective, they would all be defective. But clearly there are plenty of people that do not have major issues.

The cruise control isn't a separate device anymore. it's just a bunch of code in the engine computer, thus there is no fuse. But it still requires inputs from the switches, my first guess would be to check the brake pedal switch. If it's been bumped out of alignment then the computer will think the brakes are on and not allow the cruise. Could also mean the brake lights are on all the time. Another possibility is the steering wheel switches. Do the other switches (radio, horn) still work? There's not much else you're going to be able to do without a diagnostic tool. Disconnecting the battery for a couple minutes will reset the PCM and might help if it's some kind of software bug.
-
Yep, then as ablb says it's likely a defective sensor, or more likely a sensor that was damaged when the tires were replaced.

What does the message center say? Does it say "Low tire pressure" or "Tire pressure system fault"?

Ford issued a TSB last Friday to update the software. Have you had that done yet? -
TSB 10-24-9 was just published on Friday. It states: Some 2011 Edge and MKX vehicles may experience various concerns with MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch Systems that include the following areas: Traffic, Direction and Information (TDI) calling wrong phone number, Travel Link subscription, voice recognition, phone pairing, address book downloads, intermittent touch screen inoperable conditions, SD card fault, screen reboots, performing system maintenance, navigation set in kilometers/voice communicates in miles, and reverse camera scrolling display. To correct these conditions the APIM will need to be reprogrammed.

Autoclimate Control Issue?
Waldo replied to GreenDragon68's topic in Interior, A.C., Heat, Interior Trim
Just think of the system like the thermostat in your house. The temperature you set it to is the temperature you want in the car, it has no relation to the temperature of the air actually coming out of the vents. The car uses temperature sensors inside and outside the car to determine what temperature of air to put out. Ford designs their systems to operate normally when set at 72 degrees. If you have it set to 68, it thinks you want it pretty cool inside, so it will tend not to put out much hot air. Defrost gets a bit complicated as it forces open the recirc door (allowing only outside air). It also will use the A/C compressor, even when it's cold outside. I imagine the system is programed to turn itself on every time you start, just to avoid the possibilities of carbon monoxide poisoning, since with the system off there is no fresh air entering the vehicle. Personally I just set to 72, hit auto and forget about it. -
I think you are confusing memory positions with the easy entry feature. Easy entry (the slide back when you turn off the key) will not change the seat height ever. The memory positions certainly will allow adjustment to different heights.

As I posted on the previous page, DRL is purely a software device. There are no additional fuses or wires.
