Mainstream Media Discusses Safety of MFT
Waldo replied to rkaplan's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
The basic assumption behind Ford's stance is that people are going to do these things anyway, so why not make it as safe as possible. If you "ban" Sync and other such devices, people will just go back to using their phones like they used to. Maybe not as many people, but a big distraction for a few people is worse than a small distraction for many people. Also intrigued how this guy Sinclair makes the leap that the MyFordTouch allows you to send text messages and check facebook pages while driving. I don't believe that is actually true, he ought to actually try the system before condemning it. -
Well that's just about the understatement of the century. Updates are released internally every week and have been since about April. The team involves far more than just Microsoft and Ford employees (most of the software programming is done by third parties) and they've been working on it for years, not weeks.

Just wait, the warning will come. Dealers can be held liable for disabling a safety device. You wouldn't expect the dealer to remove your seat belt for you and give you back the car would you?

Went to dealer today he had a list of all the bugs MFT has
Waldo replied to Garemz's topic in 2011 Edge & MKX
3 pages sounds like just the big ones. The real list is probably closer to 10 pages. -
Does the Edge have auto lock?
Waldo replied to tknice's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
Good grief, how could that ever be possible? How would the car ever know if you forgot to lock or left them unlocked intentionally? -
To try to bring this back on topic, according to the shop manual, no there are no parts that can make those buttons work. To get Sync to work you must change out the FDIM, which would replace the buttons. 2012 might be a different story.
-
Things have moved quickly in the automotive industry since the last time you worked at a Ford dealership. Ford has been putting "buttons that don't work" on radios for some time now. My wife's 07 Mariner has a SAT button but no satellite module or antenna (though I think it is available as a kit). Many of Ford's 2008 and newer (Escape, Flex, Taurus, Fusion) models all have phone buttons that are present even when Sync is not installed. These phone buttons "don't work". From the Edge shop manual, here is a description of the components: All audio systems have the following functional components: Audio Control Module (ACM) Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM) Speakers (see Audio Line-Up for locations) Antenna, located at front of roof AM/FM antenna cable Steering wheel controls Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) The following functional components vary by vehicle option content: Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), located behind and directly connected to the Front Display Interface Module (FDIM) FDIM Front Control/Display Interface Module (FCDIM) Global Positioning System Module (GPSM), located behind the instrument panel Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module (THX® or Sony® sound), located behind the RH rear quarter panel Audio amplifier (Premium or THX®), located behind the RH rear quarter panel Satellite radio antenna cable Audio input jack Media hub Microphone, located in the headliner So ultimately you need to add the microphone, media hub, satellite antenna, steering wheel controls, GPSM, FDIM and APIM to get full Sync functionality. I can also tell you with 99% confidence that the wiring harnesses will not be there to connect all these modules, so you'll need to rewire everything. Then you have to figure out how to reconfigure all the other modules to communicate with the new modules, as they are all networked together.

Do you really think that Ford engineers are just sitting around waiting for problems to show up on some chart? Ford engineers have been driving around in hundreds of vehicles for years testing the system. They have a list of over 1500 issues that they are working through. They don't need help from you or anyone else right now. They know what the issues are and are working them out.
-
Well then don't tell them you want an update, describe to them a problem.

Seems like money thrown away to me. I'm sure it will pro-rate your tires based on wear so you'll still have to pay out-of-pocket if something happens anyway. A quick search found a couple similar programs for about $50 per wheel/tire, which is still too much in my opinion.
-
If you think you can outsmart Ford's engineers and the Edge's computer into getting higher mileage you're dreaming. If you keep the throttle pressure light and smooth, there's nothing SST can do to improve mileage. SST is designed for performance driving, not fuel economy.
-
Well not really, you will still need to reprogram the sensors every time you switch the tires (so twice a year). But as bbf states, it's very easy. To your original question though, if you're winter tires come with band-style sensors, they will not work on the 2011 Edge.
-
Your salesman is 100% wrong. Your tires will change by 2psi just driving around or even just sitting in your driveway between morning and afternoon. It would be ridiculous if Ford made their system that sensitive. The TPMS has several criteria it uses to determine when to set off the light and I think those are all mandated by federal law. If any one tire falls below a certain percentage of the recommended pressure or any 2 tires fall below a certain (higher) percentage it will go off. If a tire changes dramatically in a short period of time it will go off. There are a bunch of time and speed functions that go into the calculation as well. But generally if the door says 35psi, the TPMS won't go off until a tire gets down to about 26psi. Last time I had a slow leak it one by the time the light came on and I was able to stop and check the pressure was at 24psi. Also the spare tire does not have a sensor in it.

It can take months to download all ones CDs onto the hard drive in the MKS. It should take less than an hour to put as many songs onto a memory stick. And then you can take the memory stick from one car to the other.

Automatic Headlights
Waldo replied to DadofMany's topic in Glass, Lenses, Lighting, Mirrors, Sunroof (BAMR), Wipers
I installed a "Geniune Ford Accessory" autolamp system on my 2002 Focus. It doesn't have the full functionality of a factory system (you can never turn the lamps off when it's dark) but it works well. Installing the factory parts is a lottery. The SJB will need to be reconfigured as it sends input to the headlamps over the CAN network. Autolamps also uses input from the windshield wiper controller, not sure if your car will have that. When you said "harness" what did you mean? You will need the wires that go to the light sensor obviously, but you'll also need the extra wire that goes from the SJB to the headlamp switch, it's likely not there on your car. But at least you won't need to change the headlights!! -
Disabling FOB buttons
Waldo replied to wilsons66604's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
Good thing, otherwise the logo was going to use the remote start to launch your car through the garage and into your living room. -
I'm more interested in getting the basics working first, the stuff you're already supposed to have...
-
They aren't new tools, they are just a public release of what's already underneath MyFordTouch.
-
Yep, there aren't that many buildings in there to show. If they are in the database, they will show up automatically.
-
I don't know that much, I just have access to and know how to read a wiring diagram. A fuse is just a wire, so you could always rig up a wire that fits into the fuse location and attach a switch (and the original fuse) to it. Last time I did any wiring work on my own car I install a auto-dimming mirror with compass. The compass only worked when I was pressing the brakes and the auto-dimming only worked when the door was open. It was quite tricky to calibrate the compass while driving in circles with the brakes on the whole time. That's how much I know about wiring.

You are probably thinking of the headlamp delay "battery saver". If you leave your headlamps on it will turn them off after 10 minutes - this is unrelated to the accessory mode. But there is nothing that will shut down all battery power.
-
No, hardwired means hard wired. As in a wire directly from the battery through the powerpoint to the ground. There is nothing of any intelligence in the circuit. The feature you're describing (called accessory delay) does exactly what you experienced, but the powerpoints are not on the same circuit and so they will remain on.
-
Yes, it is a software issue. The DRL module can be configured, you just have to change the DID DE0A from 00 (off) to 01 (low beam), 02 (fog lamps) or 03 (turn lamps). But this is not part of the standard dealer software package. They must have the software that allows them to go right into the SPDJB to change this. Canadian dealers get the same software as US dealers.

Oops, double post.

There is no way that caster reading can be correct, you just can't add up all the tolerances to get it that far out of range. But having said that, everything you describe points to the tires being the problem. Ford actually sorts the production tires into 4 ranges and then only installs tires from within the same range on any one vehicle in order to reduce drifting. In the aftermarket you can end up with anything, so don't waste any more time on the alignment.
