Consumer Reports Reviews '11 Edge & MKX
Waldo replied to Hockey87's topic in Articles, News & Reviews
Do you mean the same Ford software engineers who designed the engine controls that give you such great performance and fuel economy? Do you mean the same Ford software engineers who designed the stability control and AWD systems that areamong the best in the business. Do you mean the same Ford software engineers who designed the auto wiper, adaptive cruise, BLIS and other leading edge technologies? Actually the truth is none of those things are really done by Ford software engineers. Almost every piece of software in the vehicle, including MyFordTouch, is lead by outside suppliers. -

There is nothing wrong with the hardware in the MyFordTouch system. The issues - including the slowness - are 100% software related. -
It's unfortunate that you're in such a frustrating situation, but this kind of thing happens all the time. Suppliers ship a batch of bad parts, parts are missing or defects are found in the process that need to be fixed. Of course someone in Ford knows exactly what is holding your car, but it's not the kind of information Ford wants out in the public. Would you really want to know your car is on hold because some forklift driver ran into the fender? Would you want to know that the seatbelt suppliers produced a batch of bad belt material? Would the suppliers want you to know that they couldn't keep up with production, what would that do to their reputation? Just be assured that Ford has your best interests in mind. They are holding your vehicle to be sure that when it's delivered it will be of the best quality possible. They would rather make you wait then deliver to you something that you'll just have to bring back to the dealer later.

But as Edgieguys link describes, Ford's latest tuning goes a step further and will advance timing until the knock sensors are triggered. Thus there is a performance benefit to running higher octane, though it still may not pay off considering the higher cost per gallon. The 2011 Edge has this strategy, but the 2008 of the OP does not.

Transport mode will end after 50 miles. If it's come back then something is really messed up. Also this was the procedure to turn it off on some of the older Ford's, not sure if it will still work on the 2011 Edge: Turn ignition to Run Press brake pedal 5 times Press Hazard switch 4 times Turn ignition to Off

There won't be anything different about the 2012s. Ford is continuously improving the product, they don't sit around and wait for a model year change. When a fix is ready, they put it in production. The 2011 Explorer has exactly the same MyFordTouch system as the Edge and the 2012 Edge will have exactly the same system as the 2011. All the software will be update-able in the 2011 so there's not much point in trading up to a 2012.

It does sound like an alignment issue to me. Too much rear toe-out will cause the issue you're describing and it will certainly be exaggerated in the snow.

Compass display is not correct
Waldo replied to phlatlander's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
Look closely at that picture of the dial compass in the guy's hand. While it's clear that it's pointing west, which direction is actually closest to the user? If the dial were actually a ball that you couldn't see through, you would only be able to see the E, even though you are pointed W. -
Compass display is not correct
Waldo replied to phlatlander's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
Consider the compass as a ball that is fixed in space. When you turn, it's actually the vehicle rotating around the compass. Thus when you are going North and turn left (to go west), since the ball doesn't move, you rotate around it to the side that says West. Sounds like everything is correct to me. -
Ford Recalls Edge & MKX for Potential Fire Hazard
Waldo replied to Mikerose's topic in Recalls, TSBs & Warranty
Tony, you don't need a letter from anyone to get the software update. Just take it to your dealer and complain about the bugs. You'll get the same update as the people who get the letter. -
Ford Recalls Edge & MKX for Potential Fire Hazard

No, one recall. A supplier screwed up something in their quality and Ford caught it just a few days too late. Nissan probably just doesn't catch this stuff at all. The fix is just replacing a module, the only question related to time is the part availability. Once they have the part, it will only take 1/2 day to replace. The software update is just the MrFordTouch update that everyone here has been talking about. Your Nissans never had anything close to this level of software and they certainly never offered anyone free upgrades. It's just like the updates you get for Windows every once in a while. Nissan figures what you don't know won't hurt you. Ford wants you to enjoy your vehicle to it's fullest potential. -
Enabling the Nav system to work while moving
Waldo replied to skimaniaz's topic in Interior, A.C., Heat, Interior Trim
Would you say the same thing if I walked in front of your house with a gun? But to the point, the 2009+ system is a totally different system and the same hacks won't work. The 2011 system is different again. There are aftermarket devices to enable the 2009+ systems, but I haven't heard of anything out there for the 2011 yet. -
I don't see how you could get any "draft" from that far back. In fact you're more likely to just get turbulent air which will make things worse, including the airflow into your cooling system.

Add nav to a 2011 with myford touch?
Waldo replied to tknice's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
Given how much trouble dealers are having just installing a basic upgrade on people's cars (without changing any settings), asking them to do something even more complicated isn't a good idea until everyone's a little more familiar with the system. -

Sync uses the GPS for 911 assist and Sync services. All Ford's with Sync have had a GPS unit since 2010 model year. Again, the reason a dealer can't enable it is purely financial. How could Ford control the revenue generated from the Nav option if any dealer could just go and turn it on? Even a 2010 Lincoln MKT (which has standard touch screen but not MyLincolnTouch) has all the hardware required for Nav, just not the software. -
Indeed, the Canadian order guide shows Adaptive Cruise as a separate stand-alone option on the Limited.
-
That's the way it's printed in the Order Guide.

Hmm, the decel fuel shut off usually kicks in pretty quick, so if it's a delay like you're saying, something doesn't seem quite right.
-
The Edge is the first vehicle to use MyFordTouch. Sync has been around for a while, but it's really a totally new system in the Edge.
-
I'm with johnd01, I don't think your vehicle is changing your braking at all, it's just the decel control of the engine that's a feeling you're not used to. Have you ever driven manual transmission cars on a regular basis?

I think nextime has a perfectly valid point. 1/4 mile times are a measure of performance, horsepower numbers are not. His point is that anyone can get good HP numbers and good fuel economy, the tough part is getting good performance numbers and good fuel economy. While the Edge does do fairly well on both counts, the truth is that Ford is intentionally "misleading" the public by emphasizing HP numbers without bringing to attention the offsets of tall gearing as it relates to performance. Now my personal opinion is that it's only "misleading" in that customers are uninformed/uneducated about what performance really is and Ford is doing nothing more than exploiting this, which is the same thing every other manufacturer and really every advertiser for any product does. However I also think it's not fair to call Ford's choice of gearing "bad" or "incorrect". Ford made those choices based on a huge number of factors and expected customers. They did not choose the gearing with the specific goal of getting good performance numbers because that's not what they think the customers want.

Ford would be pretty dumb to charge $800 for factory nav but let you buy an SD card for $400 and just plug it in. The issues aren't technical, they are business. -
Roof crush is determined by the strength of the pillars, it has nothing to do with the roof itself.

You have to have sensors inside the snow tires. Then you have to program the sensors to the car every time you change them. Do a search on TPMS.
