tafische
Hey everyone! I'm a mid level techie guy who knows how to dabble (and be dangerous), but brand new to the Edge and EcoBoost. Got my son a 2012 a little over 2 months ago. 92,000 miles. It has been a fantastic car. Today all of a sudden in the middle of a drive, it lost power. The RPMS go high but it doesn't want to shift unless you release the pedal and it just doesn't get up and go. If I just hold the pedal down a little I can go from 0-60 in about a minute lol.... When I went to restart the car, it turned over for a pretty long time. Pulled the codes and got a P87 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure - too Low. I pulled the advanced codes and looked at desired rail pressure vs actual rail pressure and they were way off. Low hundreds on current, over 1000 on desired. Not ever looking at this engine before I have no idea what is expected. There are no underboost codes or values and I looked at the waste gate percentage meter and it changing although again I dont know what is normal. What is kinda confusing to me is I get a pretty high RPM but no power..... would a clogged fuel system or bad fuel pump give this result? Any suggestions on where to look next would be appreciated! enigma-2
Fuel pump, fuel filter, etc. https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0087-obd-ii-trouble-code-fuel-rail-system-pressure-too-low-by-spencer-clayton
Snox801
More than likely its the hpfp. Also any chance he added e85 on accident? If so it cant pump enough e to get the power so you loose fuel rail pressure and this power.

I did wonder if it could be bad gas...maybe a little water? Trying to decide if I want to keep running it in this state and burn some fuel off or if that might be too much of a risk if it is something else..... WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Probably needs a fuel pump control module. Second guess would be the intank low pressure fuel pump. Have had this failure code on the 3.5 EB's and it has been the control module.
Snox801
You may be right the module is pretty rare but it does happen more than the hpfp failing. In these instances I always start with what is the cheapest to try and fix. So I think that is the way to go. Bad fuel wont give you low rail pressure it will give you bad performance but because the car would be pulling timing and boost you would have rail pressure. tamugrad2013
When mine did this it was the fuel pump. Symptoms were extremely similar except I got a check engine light. At that point the dealership insisted that they tow it in for safety reasons, but I could have limped it to the dealer. I guess I should clarify it was the low pressure fuel pump. Somehow missed it in my previous search.... Anyway, I pretty much ran out of talent on this guy and decided to let my local mechanic do it. They believe it is the High pressure pump and are going to replace it tomorrow. Hopefully that will get us back on the road. Will update with final resolution. Snox801
To bad livernois did not have one for the 2.0. They did a hpfp on my rs and now Im flex fuel. I would love to have that on my edge
tafische
Thanks for all the help. It did end up being the high pressure pump. Also have to say this car has a ton of diagnostics. I forgot to save the before graph, but the actually pressure was running 200-400 and that was it. I think the car has more pep that before. Likely wasnt working at full capability and finally gave up.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Wow that was really low pressure! There was absolutely no change in sound during operation? Usually you can hear a rattle or something especially if the spring is broken or the cam follower is broken. Enjoy the newfound power!
