Help please! Acceleration stops on freeway!

Hello,

I really need help. We bought our daughter a used 2016 Ford Edge in May 2020 and it had roughly 35,000 miles on it. It currently has 46,000 miles. This summer, while driving on the freeway, her car lost acceleration. Although she could maintain for a little while (without acceleration the car naturally started to slow down), but she couldn't accelerate! She pulled off on the shoulder of the freeway and turned her car off. She restarted it, got back on the freeway and it did it again. Eventually she got home (thank you, Jesus!). We tried to recreate it, but it didn't happen for me. Since then, the problem has occurred a handful of times (see video). We've taken the car to Mossy Ford three times and they can't seem to experience it so they can't investigate the problem. I sent them the video, but unless the problem happens when they drive the car, they can't do anything about it. In the video you will see the check engine light on which was the first time the light ever came on when the car was experiencing the acceleration failure. Mossy Ford cleared the code but didn't think it was related to the problem. It must not have been because the acceleration has failed since then. We are so frustrated! Our daughter is 17 years old and can no longer drive the car anywhere on the freeway. Does anyone know anything about this? Any advice or recommendation? I'm very appreciative and grateful for any help! Sorry...apparently I can't upload an 8 second video. If you are interested in helping or might think you have an idea of what's going on, I can email the video to you.

This is probably a long shot but if your vehicle has traction control maybe it is detecting wheel slippage either due to a wrong size tire or a faulty sensor.  If it detects wheel slippage it cuts power to the wheels.  Traction control can be turned off for 1 ignition cycle.  On my 2015 Edge I was able to do this via the menu.  On my 2019 Edge there is a button on the dash.

Thank you so much for your reply! I will give this info to my husband and will see if this could be it. The road was dry, a normal sunny CA day. But, I will have him check it out. Thank you again!

There is no video posted in your post.

Any warning lights comes on when the issue happens?

Hello, only one time did a check engine warning light come on although the acceleration issue has been happening for at least 4 months. The code that popped up was P1016 (turbo wastegate control) in the PCM memory. The Ford service tech/mechanic cleared the code and was unable to replicate the acceleration issue. Unfortunately, the acceleration issue occurred again a few days later when my daughter was driving on the freeway!

Also, I can't seem to upload the video no matter how short I make it. The attachment option must only be for pictures.

possibly the wastegate solenoid, although still could be the actuator on the turbo, which usually sets a different code. electrical problems can be really flaky.

some connectors are known to have loose pins, so while the part is ok, the wiring is compromised.

i would also verify the battery is charging correctly and has good CCAs.

This is exactly what has been happening to me with my 2016 Ford Edge. Did you get the issue fixed?

Hello Janice. Yes the Edge was fixed. I will have to ask my husband or call the Ford dealership where we took the car for it to be fixed. After taking the car to Mossy Ford about four times, the mechanics were finally able to witness the issue first hand. As I recall, it was a $2 part and the end of it had frayed. I'll get it figured out and respond.

Hi!  I was wondering if you could share what the part was?  I'm having the same exact issue with my 2016 Ford edge and have already paid diagnostic fees from the dealership only to have them be clueless as to the problem.  I just had the engine light come on as well and got the same error code as you had P1016.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as i was told I need to pay for diagnostics fees every time I bring it in (even though it's for the same issue every time which is frustrating!).
