choff1138 Posted October 29, 2010 Report Share Posted October 29, 2010 So - first official snow fall in my little town in Alaska happened last night which meant black ice driving this morning since Anchorage just got rain then freezing temps. (love winter) My stock 18's Michelin something or others handled great. I felt the AWD kick on at a couple of starts from red lights, but no weaving or swaying or in general not goingness. Did a couple of "break checks" on our neighborhood street since no one is up as early as we are, and it stopped great. Overall. Very happy. Yeah- I have played with it some, but most of the time my hubby drives my lazy butt around (actually we work about 5 minutes apart so just car pool) so I told him about it and he had it on yesterday and told me it was way to distracting. choff1138 Posted November 2, 2010 Author Report Share Posted November 2, 2010 Another snow storm this morning with anywhere between 1 - 4 inches of snow right before rush hour this morning. A bit of a rain mix in to add some extra excitement. Last year's first snow fall resulted in something like 150 ditch divers - haven't seen a count for today yet but I am guessing a few since school buses should count as more than one. The Edge with stock 18's handled perfectly. We got pulled a bit into a snow/slush buildup between lanes but never felt like we lost control of the car like I used to with the Escort. Coming from a super light car, I am glad for the extra weight. Winter is officially in South Central Alaska and the Edge is handling just how I wanted it to. YEAH ME! Now that the first snow fall is out of the way - most of the rest of winter should be good. Amazing how people forget how to drive or push it to the limits to get their tires changed. The all weathers have been handling great and I am loving hearing other cars spin their tires at lights. (give it more gas that will help...hehehehe) But after our drive home last night in very wet snow/rain mix we noticed a fun spot that snow collects... That's aerodynamics for ya Oh I knew I was going AWD no matter what anyone said... got to dodge those moose (YES I AM KIDDING) Yeah - we were knocking slush out of the wheel wells and looked up... pretty funny to me. It's interesting how much different it drives with traction control turned off. Try turning yours off sometime so you can appreciate it when it's activated. I've gone through six snow storms plsu a rain/ice one. The snow banks at my condo's parking lot behind my car tower over ten feet. I'm having a ball building snowbanks by shovel. Weather guy's say another storm's headed in Tuesday night I want to wash my car so it stays clean for ten minutes. BTW, I love driving in the snow and tormenting Camrys. Aslo, great heating system in the car. Oh yeah, I like staring at weather maps with radar when I'm sitting in a parking lot. A trip during an ice storm with fozen streets was the diciest driving i've done, but that was like driving on a hockey rink...and I still got to my destination safely. Dont think a second set of tires will be needed here in NJ, but if anyone is interested, Pirelli does make specific Snow/Ice tires in a 22" size to match our stock tires. First, the backup proximity sensors don't seem to be able to detect snow mounds until the very last minute. Second, the remote start seems to have lost a lot of range. I used to be able to start it from about 100 ft, but now it seems to be down to about 50ft or less. I'm not sure if it's the reduced reflectivity of the snow, or that the electronics aren't as sensitive at colder temps. Any one else notice these? When I bought it, it would pick up a curb from 15ft away when backing up. How I back into the same exact parking spot at work and it can't see the snowbank until it's registering in the red zone right before I hit it about a foot away. I went out this morning ...in the 0 F temp...to shovel my Edge out of the drifts. When i hit remote start, the Edge sounded pretty tight but finally kicked in and started. Wow, that was just 2 nights in sub zero temps and it's straining to start. Do any of you Canadian's use the block heater? And let's not leave out Choff.
