  1. Did the update fix the annoying steering wheel seek button behaviour?
  2. Thank you for the response. I will not be wasting my time at the dealership anytime soon. Unless I start seeing oil on my garage floor or start hearing a knock myself, it will be business as usual. I'm currently operating under the assumption that slight seal seepage was attributed to the few times I brought it out of storage last winter for a short drive. I travel in the winter time and had my Edge in storage, inside, and fired it up a few times and ran it for about fifteen minutes per time during the months of December through March. Whatever helps me sleep at night. I've traded vehicles for less than a little oil leakage. Just going to keep a close eye on oil levels going forward. Best personal regards,
  3. I had my '11 Edge in to my favourite quick lube this morning for it's second oil change at 5,300 miles (8,500km) and 13 months ownership. They know and respect that I only want the oil and filter changed and not to fool with anything else in the engine bay, etc. I like that it's not an all day process as it seems to be at the dealership and that I can see what's going on at all times. Yeah, I'm anal like that. Anyway, at the end of the process the 'downstairs' guy comes up and tells me there are a few things he noticed.... There appears to be an oil leak of some sort coming from the top rear of the engine and 'sweating' (as he puts it) down the back of the block. He couldn't see where it was coming from. The passenger side half shaft has oil on it at the transaxle end and it's slinging fluid on the engine. He heard a knock in the bottom end at idle but when he tried to locate the source with his ear to a ratchet extension he said it was coming from within the engine. The 'topside' tech could not hear the knock. The level was about half a quart low. Last oil change was in November at about 2,800 miles (4,500km) so about 2,500 miles ago. I'm not sure what to think at this point. I certainly do not drive my vehicles hard - quite the opposite. I haven't had anyone comment on oil leakage from any of my vehicles for at least the last 7 years. I always use high quality full synthetic oil. There is no oil spotting on my garage floor. When I got home (after about four hours of driving) I got as far as I could under the vehicle and yes, the engine end of the passenger half-shaft appears to have oil of some sort on it. A very light coat and I couldn't see any signs of fluid being slung anywhere. I couldn't get myself far enough under to inspect this other leak. As far as any low end knock, I'm blindsided. I haven't heard it, aside from the engine being a bit noisy when cold. Nothing I would consider a problem. Lots of warranty left regardless. Anyone else have any of these issues as such a low mileage?
  4. Are you law enforcement? Otherwise why do you feel a need to carry a weapon with you? Sorry, as a Canadian I can't understand the fear that someone must have to feel the need to carry a gun.
  5. I see. They seem like a small dealership. That can be good or bad. I bought my second GMC Terrain from Thomas actually, mostly because I didn't like the service I got from the Trenton/Belleville GM dealers.
  6. Hello fellow Edge owner and fellow Ontarian. I hail from just east of you by about 45 minutes along the 401. May I ask which dealer you purchased from? Was it the outfit across from the Northumberland Mall?
  7. I think it's more about how you drive than what. I've never owned a two wheel drive vehicle.... Always Jeeps, 4x4 half tons and AWD SUVs. And I've driven successfully and safely in every condition there is. That being said, I've also passed countless AWD/4WD vehicles upside down in the ditch on a winter's day. Traction for acceleration is going to be there at all times.... But that's where the benefits end. Don't become overconfident just because you have an AWD badge on the lift gate. That's the quickest way to become rubber side up.
  8. I will. I have no major complaints with my Edge, but I am extremely worried about the future of powertrains in vehicles. I like a larger V6 as opposed to turbo four cylinders and small and twin turbo V6s. That worry has driven me to upgrade more often than one normally does. I may have to drive the same vehicle forever if the 2.0L turbo four is the only engine on the market!
  9. Thanks for all of your responses to my OT question. I guess I notice it more in the Edge because the leather is softer than I'm used to. I'd hate to see the seats in 50,000 mi if they look like this in 5,000. As far as creaking and popping, 'weak' seats are something I've seen in Ford vehicles all the way back to the '80s. Myself, I am quite careful not to 'stress' the seat too much. Although my Edge has had a bit of a popping sound in the lumbar (I keep it deflated because it's not in the right spot for me) from day 1. Not too big a deal... nothing's perfect. And I've got my eye on the 2013 Lincoln MKZ 3.7L AWD. Can't wait to test drive one!
  10. Sorry this is off-topic... but do any of you notice the left-most part of the seat cushion on the leather seat has developed some wrinkles? I ask because there seem to be some 'larger' folks posting here (I'm 6'2"-230 myself). I only have 5,000 miles on my '11 Edge.
  11. Interesting you mention the wheels. I like the 20" wheels up close on a stationary Edge but, at a distance out on the road, IMHO they change the look of the vehicle dramatically in a way that doesn't appeal to me. The best way I can describe it is that the Edge looks as if it's on 'stilts'. I feel the same way about other vehicles... the Chrysler Aspen comes to mind. Of course, I am in an area where only about 1 in 20 vehicles has custom wheels so I'm not used to the 'jacked up' look of big wheels.
  12. I haven't heard an Ecoboost running but I know from my last vehicle (GMC Terrain) that Direct Injection engines, due to their high pressure fuel pump, are noisier at idle than MPFI engines. I always likened the sound at idle to a sewing machine (don't know why... when was the last time I was near one of those???).
  13. ^ Do you know if the MKX has a better ride and is substantially quieter inside than the Edge? I have read that the Sport is encumbered by the huge wheels in terms of performance. To be honest, I'd be fine with an MKX with the 18" polished aluminum wheels... I'm not a 'wheels' man lol. Love the idea of power telescoping steering wheel as well as the cooled seats. Being over 6' tall my seat is already almost all the way back so Easy Exit isn't something I'd use. Also I really like the 'Bridge of Weir" leather on the seats. I remember them being quite cushy when I sat in one at the Toronto Auto Show last winter. Love the idea of a heated steering wheel as well as the real wood trim. I understand the MKX will be all-new for MY 2014 but I'm not too thrilled with the thought of a 2.7L V6 (twin turbo?) that is rumoured to be the engine. I think maybe I should wait until more details are released about the next gen before I make a decision to buy either a new one or a 'leftover' 2013. Gotta be honest... I'm not liking the trend of engines becoming smaller in displacement and turbocharged. Direct Injection would be a good addition to the current V6 lineup IMHO.
  14. I'm getting the itch for a new vehicle again and was doing a little research. I am quite happy with my Edge still but only have 4,000 miles aftter 11 months of ownership. Nevertheless, I'm always keeping my options open for bigger and better things. I've been looking at MKXs as the prices are pretty good with the Employee Pricing discount they have right now. I haven't gone to the a Lincoln dealership yet... the nearest one is about an hour's drive away. I'm interested in improving on the already excellent Edge with a cushier ride (I'm assuming), quieter interior and the other options you cannot get on the Edge. I was considering taking a look at a '13 Sport to see if the 3.7L was worth making the switch but in looking at the brochure I see you can't get HIDs or the radar cruise system and that the passenger seat still has manual recline. I find that strange. In any event, I also noticed in the brochure they refer to the transmission as having a "6-Speed SelectShift Automatic Transmission with Sport Mode" the Sport also mentions this but adds "with Paddle Shift Activation". Anyone know what that means? Are they referring to the ability to shift gears manually via the button on the shifter? Also of note (Canadian 2013 brochure btw) is an SEL Appearance Package: "SEL Appearance Package includes unique leather-trimmed seats with grey Alcantara suede perforated inserts, 20" painted black aluminum wheels with machined faces, unique headlamp and tail lamp treatment, body-colour grille and floor mats with logo (requires 201A)" Has anyone purchased one with this package, or encountered one on the street?
  15. I realized this morning, after exactly 11 months and 6,400 kilometres that my Edge is not Tuxedo Black as I had (I guess) assumed. The window sticker says Ebony Black. I don't drive my Edge much, let alone wash it, and I figured the permanent film of dust had obstructed the metallic from showing through. What I don't understand is why the brochure for the 2011s doesn't even show a non-metallic black as being available. Did it have something to do with the disaster in Japan?
  16. Hello, fellow Ontarian! Can you comment on the refinement of the 2.0L compared with your BMW? I have to believe the Edge is much more coarse and noisy compared with BMW's nice inline sixes.
  17. Can't you get a Limited without the vision package? I had the same dilemma last July when I bought mine. An SEL with the Driver's Entry, Canadian Comfort and Canadian Touring packages along with the chrome 18" wheels was quite close to the Limited I ended up with. In the end I couldn't forego the Sony stereo and the backup camera (the camera is standard now I think). The ambient lighting and homelink are icing on the cake. Woodgrain I could live without though!
  18. This is exactly the reason why I drive four wheel drive vehicles exclusively and have never owned a "two wheel drive". I realize 4WD/AWD only really helps to accelerate the vehicle and I use that to my advantage with the full understanding of its limitations. To me there is nothing worse than to see a vehicle sliding toward me not have the traction to get out of the way, or otherwise maneuvre evasively.
  19. I haven't heard an Edge Ecoboost at idle yet but I know that Direct Injection engines are quite a bit noisier due to the high pressure fuel pump and injectors. Like a loud sewing machine. Take notice next time you walk in front of an idling late model BMW. Those engines sound like they are diesels when they aren't. Also, four cylinders generally have more vibration than larger V-engines. Especially in situations like being stopped, idling in drive with the A/C on. It could be an interior panel fitment issue, but engine bay size? Now that's creative!
  20. I was on the fence myself last year when I bought my Edge. The dealer stocked similarly equipped SELs for less (obviously) but I didn't want to go with a 6-speaker stereo system (my previous vehicle had 8). Also, ambient lighting, homelink, rear view camera and HIDs weren't available on SELs at the time.
  21. Hub caps are something else, no? Like a cap for the hub. I always LOL when I read people finally notice they have chrome clad wheels. You've never noticed the telltale 'lip' they all have, or the fact they have to use stick on wheel weights because they can't use conventional ones? Lots of manufacturers are using these now. Besides, isn't a chrome wheel essentially chromed steel? I thought your choices were always chromed steel, painted aluminum, clear coated aluminum or polished aluminum. Chrome clad is a way to get the really shiny look with the benefit of an alloy wheel.
  22. lol beauty is in the eye of the beholder! While I don't disagree with you on the earlier models, I love the 2011+ MKX. Very classy look.
  23. Not to take this thread further off track, but consider this: the new Explorer Sport with the Ecoboost has a liquid cooling system on its PTO clutch due to the extra power. I'd want to be pretty sure the existing system in the Edge could handle the extra juice. In other news, a new article was posted on Ford Inside News in the last couple of days that mentioned work on the new Edge/MKX/something-Max was underway and confirmed again there would be no V6 in the Edge. Different story for the Lincoln though which is at least a ray of hope. I think I'll wait until more details emerge on the new models and decide whether to wait for the '14 or just grab a '13 MKX.
  24. Ahh you caved! But in all seriousness, glad you are happy with the upgrade. I haven't upgraded yet, mostly because I don't think the interface needed to be simplified. I kind of wish they provided an option for 'Beginner' or 'Advanced' so we could choose the depth of info displayed. I like the look of the new nav and I don't use the phone system much but I do have a couple of hangups about the radio and climate functions. Can someone answer me the following... On the home screen, currently the two seat heater buttons show, while the temps and 'Auto' (or fan speed icon?) are in the bottom bar. With the upgrade, it looks like the heater buttons are stll there and the temps have been moved above them with only the word 'Climate' in the bottom bar. So, does the 'Auto' no longer show anywhere on the home screen? Currently the 6 radio presets show on the home screen while the current song (and channel?) displays in the bottom bar. WIth the new system, the station/channel only appears above the presets? Or does the song still appear there?
  25. I think choice is key. They could still position a super-efficient turbo-4 as the mainstream engine offering while providing a V6 for those who prefer it. Personally I (and I'm sure I'm not alone) don't care if they make an 800 hp four cylinder... until they can massage out the coarseness and high RPM whine there will be a certain portion of the market that will still not buy in. Either way, I hope the next gen Edge goes on a serious diet.
