Tow Package/Radiator/Cooling Fans
Haz replied to coeperc's topic in Cargo, Hauling, Roof Racks & Towing
I crawed beneath my Factory Tow Package equipped 2012 MKX and I can see the transmission cooler lines and related components shown in the attached Ford Parts online illustration. The transmission cooler is separate and immediately forward of the (engine cooling) radiator. A Ford Parts illustration of the radiator is also attached. I'm not aware of any setting of the Factory Tow Package which modifies transmission shift points, though the "Distance to empty" calculation can be changed to use a lower Towing MPG value, and the Trailer Sway Control can be turned "off" or left "on", which is its default setting. Good luck! -
That is a great looking Edge! It's impressive that you chose the Sport over Evoque & Q5. Nice that you could save money by having a Ford retiree in your immediate family. Since you are new to Edge, perhaps you'll enjoy the attached document. Good luck! 2014 Ford Edge Source Book.pdf

Try inputting your vehicle's VIN using this website, to see if it reveals any more detail... http://owner.ford.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Owner/Page/RecallsPage The brief Action description from ETIS suggests the PCM might need reflashing. ETIS does not show this Action applying to my 2012 MKX. Good luck!

While I am partial to the toothy front grill of my MKX, I am especially happy to have the 3.7L powertrain for towing slightly above the MKX's 3,500 lb capacity. I don't know why the Edge Sport's towing capacity is downgraded to 2,000 lbs -- perhaps it's suspension related -- but, the MKX has been a no-regrets purchase for me. Good luck!

Looking at the photo, I also expected there must be a clearance issue. So, I took a look at my 2012 MKX and I found its doors have similar marks. In the operation of the door, there is nothing in the vicinity of those sheet metal surfaces that can be marking them. Since the paint at the mark on the metal edge is slightly disturbed, I am guessing the marks are the result of the assembly process. The doors are painted before the latch mechanism is installed, so the marks are probably from a locator pin used during the assembly of the door. At the edge of the marks, there was a very small metal burr that flaked off when I ran my finger over it. It probably does create a very slight risk of rust that could be eliminated by applying touch-up paint on that very small, potentially-bare metal edge. Ford would do well if they gave Omar an Inspector job in their assembly plant. To orient Omar for his new job, and for everyone else who has not seen the inside of an assembly plant, here is video taken inside Ford's Oakville Assembly Plant where Edge, MKX, Flex, and MKT vehicles are built... http://www.youtube.com/embed/hqzVo6_5ZHQ Good luck!

13N02 - Extended Warranty Coverage on Brake Booster
Haz replied to omar302's topic in Recalls, TSBs & Warranty
A variety of information, including Build Date, can be viewed by entering your vehicle's VIN on this site... https://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleRegSelector.do After you input your VIN and click on Search, your Vehicle Summary page will be displayed. Beneath the Minor Features heading of your Vehicle Summary page, make sure you click on the sentence "There are more minor features for this vehicle..." in order to see the full feature listing for your vehicle. The Vehicle Summary page also lists Outstanding Field Service Actions for your vehicle. Good luck! -
Using Sync V3.6.2, the new Lincoln logo animation appears when either front door is opened, however, my MKX is not equipped with the THX II audio system, so I've not ever seen that logo appear. Good luck!

My 2012 MKX has three levels of front seat heating (and cooling). Good luck!

Did two trial runs without touching up/down switch on my 2012 MKX's shifter while in "Manual" mode. The transmission only upshifted at the tachometer's redline and it only downshifted when vehicle was brought to a stop. It was quite a wild ride, red-lining up to 4th gear. Good luck!

The 2014 Edge Source Book adds this encouragement to dealership Sales Reps, saying the capability exists with 3.5L & 3.7L engines, meaning Edge Sport and other Edge models are included... "Make The Point: SelectShift Transmission Sport Mode - When conducting a test-drive with Edge, be sure to show the customer how Sport mode operates, providing the performance of a manual transmission without the fuss of operating a clutch. Point out how the SelectShift automatic transmission works in harmony with the 3.5L and 3.7L V6 engines. Also take the time to show the customer how the display in the instrument cluster indicates the gear selection. SelectShift Sport mode is a performance feature the Edge enthusiast customer is sure to appreciate." The 2013 Edge Source Book page that I attached in an earlier post says it more explicitly, this way... And don’t forget, SE, SEL and Limited models operate Sport mode from a switch on the transmission shifter while Sport includes the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. SelectShift Sport mode is a performance feature the Edge enthusiast customer is sure to appreciate." Since 2012 on MKX, the transmission mode continues to be described as "Manual". Steering wheel-mounted shift paddles were added as standard equipment to MKX in 2013 and they continue as standard for 2014. Lincoln describes the 2014 MKX's paddle shifter operation this way... "ELECTRONIC SIX-SPEED SELECTSHIFT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITH PADDLE ACTIVATION - The six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with paddle activation is a racing-inspired feature that includes steering wheel-mounted “paddle” shifters that enable the driver to select Manual mode and change gears up or down without using a clutch. • Paddle activation complements the six-speed automatic transmission, which offers short first and second gears for impressive launch and acceleration, plus tall override gears for fuel economy • Helps increase acceleration and/or braking effect on the engine • A squeeze back on the right paddle will deliver an upshift; a squeeze back on the left will induce a matched-rev downshift" It would be interesting to hear from someone with a 2013/2014 MKX in order to learn if the newer Lincoln "Manual" mode includes the enhanced performance automatic shift profile that newer Edge owners are describing as a benefit of the 2013/2014 Edge's "Sport" mode. Good luck! 2014 Ford Edge Source Book - Transmission Page.pdf 2014 Lincoln MKX Product Portfolio - Performance-Handling Page.pdf

Omar: Thanks for adding your experience. Ford should be highlighting the added value & functionality of "Sport" mode because references provided to dealers do not make it clear. Good luck!

Based on the similarity of the descriptions of "Sport" & "Manual' modes in the Source Book references, I expect they're functionally identical. Depending on the model year and the vehicle model, the shift mode indicator says either "S" or "M" and the driver's selection method is either the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters or the rocker switch on the shifter handle. It's all about providing the driver the ability to modify the gear change timing so long as the driver's selection does not bring harm to the engine or transmission. Relating to this feature, there is probably a programming difference between transmissions mated to 3.5L engines (Edge) and 3.7L engines (Edge Sport & MKX), in order to prevent over revving the engine when the driver fails at properly timing an upshift or downshift. But I don't think you need to feel cheated if you have "Manual" mode on your shift indicator, which was what it was also called on 2011 & 2012 Edge Sport models. I think this is simply a Marketing decision to call it "Sport" on the newer model year Edges. The Marketing folks must believe Edge buyers prefer having Sport mode, while MKX buyers are satisfied with Manual mode. Good luck!

The 2013 Edge Owners Guide says... "Battery Saver - If you leave the courtesy lamps, dome lamps or headlamps on, the battery saver shuts them off 10 minutes after you switch the ignition off." It does not mention any Battery Saver affect upon parking lights. I did a 10-minute test on my MKX's parking lights and the Battery Saver did not shut them off. Perhaps the parking lights are excluded from auto-shutoff in the same way as the 4-way Emergency Flashers -- to ensure the vehicle can be more visible when stationary, especially in the dark, when the driver leaves the parking lights on to warn other drivers that the vehicle is parked and poses a potential traffic hazard. When I did the 10-minute parking lights test, the Warning Chime did sound when I opened the door, to inform me that I had left the parking lights on after the ignition was turned off. Thanks to EDwin, we all know the gravity of that chimed warning if we unintentionally leave our parking lights on. Good luck!

The attached files provide fuller description of the 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission's non-automatic function, marketed as "Sport" mode on 2013 & 2014 Edges and marketed as "Manual" mode on 2011 & 2012 Edges and 2011-to-2014 MKXs... What are people towing with there EDGE's
Haz replied to ErikB's topic in Cargo, Hauling, Roof Racks & Towing
Spitfire: Your 2013 Edge SEL has 3,500 lbs towing capacity rating if it is equipped with the factory trailer tow package, which provides the 2-inch Class II hitch receiver, a larger radiator, upgraded cooling fans, trailer sway control capability added to the AdvanceTrac electronic stability control program, and a 4-pin wiring harness. If your 2013 Edge SEL does not have the factory trailer tow package, its towing capacity rating is only 2,000 lbs. BoatTest lists the dry weight of just your boat, without any trailer, at 2,280 lbs. If your dealer did not provide you the original window sticker with your 2013 Edge SEL and you want to determine if your vehicle has the factory trailer tow package, you can input your Edge SEL's VIN using this website, which will provide you the window sticker showing your Edge SEL's optional equipment. I am towing a Robalo R180 boat on a single-axle aluminum trailer with surge brakes, weighing a total of 4,030 lbs when the boat's 50-gallon gas tank is full. My 2012 MKX with factory trailer tow package pulls the boat & trailer extremely well, even at highway speed. I've experienced no problem with the boat pushing my FWD vehicle around during normal driving. I drive defensively and avoid circumstances that might lead to a panic stop. And as you expect, the front wheels of my MKX remain on the level surface of boat ramps when I am launching and retrieving my boat. I bought my MKX expecting to tow this boat and my MKX purchase has proven to be a good decision. Good luck! -
