victoryrider
Thinking about buying a new Edge for the wife and the ecoboost seems like a great engine from all the info Ive seen but was wondering about long term reliability . The v 6 has a little worse mpg but seems like a 4cyl would be considerably over worked to get that much out of it and all the extra heat too. 037
V6 is a lot more fun and you will work a lot less. Also, if you ever need another 100 hp it's $620 away.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Guess we should clear up WHICH V6 we are talking about now, LOL. The 3.5 or the 2.7 ...
037
In my mind there is only the 2.7 v6, 3.5 was not even in the running.

IWRBB
I've not heard a lot of bad things about the 2.0 engine. The 3.5L is a known quantity. It'll run a quarter million miles as long as a leaking water pump doesn't take out the bottom end. If I had to bet which would need less repairs- I'd pick the 3.5L. It's less stressed and has less parts/systems to go wrong. If you plan to keep it for 5 years and sell it, it doesn't matter. If you plan to keep it long term and drive the wheels off it, I'd get the 3.5L personally.
akirby
I dont buy the more stress argument on the 2.0LEB because it was designed from day one for turbocharging including the block and all the components. You never hear those comments about turbodiesels which are designed the same way. Edited April 25, 2018 by akirby
IWRBB
A boosted engine sees higher peak cylinder pressures than a N/A engine, by far. That's bad on pistons, rings, blocks, and bearings- whether it's "designed for it" or not. A non-turbo diesel engine will always be way more reliable than a turbo diesel. Same goes for gas engines. However, since very few Ford engine problems are short block related these days, I'll give you that.
akirby
Both should easily last over 150K miles so to me it's a moot issue.
Victor91
It's now 2024, so I'm posting for future purchasers. I know it depends and can be anecdotal on which is better but now since a lot of time has passed since the 2.0 Ecoboosts have been out..I see nothing but issues posted about the 2.0. sure, the 3.5 duratec has it own issues, just going off of what I've seen. Most now say to stay away from the Ecoboost.
FX3
17 2.0l here at 81500miles (bought new with 12miles) No issues and I tend to drive it hard. I see the complaints on the 2.0l but have not seen this on mine. Avoided the flywheel issue also. Had it checked when recall came out and tech found no issues. Contemplated trading it but passed on it and no regrets. The only real issue I have is what to replace it with if I loose it due to accident.
