Happy New Year everyone!

So my wife bought a 2007 Ford Edge brand new, puts 15,000 miles on it in 1.5 years, and then the engine light came on, the car rattles and acts like it is going to stall whenever she stops at a light...the car acts like it's kinda choking or something.

We took it to our local gas station to have it looked at, and were told that it needs to have some parts replaced and it will cost around $700, that's when I found out that the car has not had an oil change ever!

I immediately had the car sent to the local Ford service center, the guy there called after a few days and told us that our car needs a brand new engine and the warranty is voided due the the lack of oil changes.

The cost will be around $10,000!

Is this possible?

TIA!

Hi thau919. :D I am very sorry to hear about your misfortune, but I am not sure what your question is.

Are you asking if it is possible for an engine to fail after not changing or checking (?) the oil for 15,000 miles? Yes it is possible.

Are you asking if it is possible that Ford would not cover an engine replacement on a vehicle that did not have proper (or possibly any) regular maintenance performed for 15,000 miles? Yes that is also possible.

Or are you asking if it is possible for a new engine to cost $10,000? Well, the price sounds a bit high to me, but I am not completely familiar with the price of installing a new 3.5L engine in an Edge, so it may be possible that the price is that high.

What is certain is the following: The recommended "Normal" oil change interval for the Edge is every 7,500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

The oil change interval for an Edge used for heavy stop and go driving, towing, severe duty etc. is every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. So according to how your wife drove the car, it should have had at least 3 oil changes performed in the last year and a half. Unfortunately, it had none performed.

Let me make it clear that I am expressing no personal judgment as to how your wife maintained her new Edge, nor am I trying to give you a hard time or pile onto an already bad situation . All I am doing is giving you the facts according to the information you provided.

Unfortunately, in this case the Dealer/Ford is perfectly within their rights to refuse Warranty coverage for a vehicle which was not properly maintained. All you can do is appeal to Ford or the BBB Autoline Program. The instructions concerning how to do that are contained in the Warranty Guide Booklet you were given when you purchased your new Edge. Or you can give the shop that told you they could fix it for $700 a shot at fixing it. Maybe you will get lucky and it is not a blown engine. It is unlikely you can take it to another Ford Dealer for Warranty repairs at this point, as the lack of maintenance is already noted in your vehicle records.

Also, I am curious as to how the Dealer determined that no oil changes were performed in a year and a half? And how much oil was actually remaining in the vehicle when it was brought to the Dealer?

I wish you the best of luck. :beerchug:

10K for parts and labor does sound a little high.

15k miles even on the original oil should not cause the engine to fail (ask my brother in law what 18K oil looks like).

BUT it will void your warranty.

I'm betting the motor didn't have any oil the last time she drove it.

I wouldn't let the dealer start without a second opinion.

Try here for a much cheaper way to get a motor installed http://www.autopartsfair.com/used_engines/...-inventory.html

Looks like $1500 + shipping + installation.

I'm thinking you can find a "auto repair" shop in your yellow pages that will do it for 3K.

BUT YOU NEED TO DO SOME HOMEWORK, check them out first.

Here's my opinion, he's pulling our legs. Nobody is that stupid!

Don't call them stupid, just "mechanically un-inclined.

35 yr’s ago I helped change the oil in my new brother in law's 2 yr old Chevy with 18000+ miles for the first time  , this was before he earned a Masters degree from Baylor.

An ex-coworker (retired from the army) bought a LoJack for a new 97 escort.

A friend tells me his wife killed a motor, the check engine light was on for several days.

It would have been nice if the repair shop had repaired the problem (leaking heater core) while they were working on the symptom (burned up motor). She was back in 2 weeks for another motor. She worked for a law office so she didn't pay for the second motor.

. . .short story. . .

had a '72 Impala back in '75

drove it 20k one summer without checking/changing the oil :banghead:

an idiot light came on one day in the fall :redcard:

so I took it to the local garage

undid the oil drain plug. . .nothing came out. . .put a flashlight up to the hole,

looked like a solid of some kind. . .put my finger in the hole, pulled it back out and it was covered

with what looked like wheel bearing grease. A can of engine cleaner in the oil and 20 minutes

later it drained. Engine ran fine till we got rid of it several years later. Began changing the oil every 3k after that schooling.

Hard to believe 15k and no oil change would kill a vehicle. . .but things could be different now I guess. :stats:

Factory oil is not to be left in any longer then what the service book says. It's not normal oil. It's ment to break in the motor. 15K with the thin factory oil in a new DOHC motor is not good. I would think it would be enough to kiss it good by! However if that was me I would be getting a motor from a rear end total loss Edge out of the junk yard, get it running, and trade it in for a little shit box for my wife to drive since she cant take 30 minutes to get the oil changed in her new car. :finger:

Hi Steve. :D I first want to offer my advance apologies before I go on with this reply. I do not want it to seem as though I am picking on you, since this is the second time tonight that I am correcting you. It is just that we should all have the correct information. So again, my apologies in advance.

That being said upfront, I need to point out that our Owners Manuals clearly explain the following information: The Factory oil fill is a "normal oil". It is the same 5W-20 Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic oil that we can all buy in any Automotive store. It is not a "break-in oil". And it is not a "thin oil". In fact, the Edge Owners Manual clearly states not to use any type of break-in oils or friction modifiers, especially during the break-in period (approximately the first 1,000 miles).

However, you are correct that the factory fill should not be left in any longer than what the Maintenance Schedule states. And that is a "Normal Schedule" of 7,500 miles/6 months, and a "Severe Duty" or "Towing" schedule of 5,000 miles/6 months. To carry your statement a step further, no oil should be left in for longer than the Maintenance Schedule states. Doing so can be damaging to your engine and void any engine related Warranty claims (as thau818 unfortunately found out).

If anyone doubts the information stated above, they can check their Owners Manual for corroboration.

I am only posting this correction so that all of our fellow forum members have the correct information.

Good luck. :beerchug:

I think the main problem was it was out of oil. which is not good for a car to use 5 Qts of oil in 15k miles.

I have a 06 f-250 6.0 with a fs2500 bypass oil filter I run rotela synthetic oil. And I have put 30k miles on the oil with no trouble.

I change the bypass filter every 10k miles and send a oil sample off to blackstone be analized and they tell me when to change it.

I do check my oil.

we have an 08 limited with 12k miles on it and I have never raised the hood on it.

but the oil has been changed 2 times by the dealer.

but they have allways put 5k miles on the oil change sticker.

Thanks for your input however dont count on the book being right 100% of the time. These are both Motorcraft filters WITH THE SAME PART NUMBER by the book. You tell me if the factory filter is the same as the service replacement filter? Keep in mind the Owners manual would have you think the factory filter and service replacement are the same. They even have the same part number.....

IMO that is really sad, any engine with that misfortune of an owner should be blessed by the pope in Rome...But OTOH I do not beleive that 15K in todays synthetic oils or blends, which are said to last at least 7.5K-10K, will make an oil completelly useless, and to cause a motor to catastrophically fail to the point of need replacement, that is IMO an exageration of the dealer to say the least, unless the oil was completelly gone, and the engine was working completelly dry...

As a quick comparison, I have seen some russian V8 trucks to work far more than that, with just burnt oil on them, completelly black, not even the right kind, and not even the required level (in some cases far below the minimum) and none of them broke or failed (BTW no filters at all) and those engines are far worst than those we have nowadays...copied mainly from old american models...

Now it is indeed a very good excuse for the dealer to refuse the warranty, and you will be on your own. now given that the warranty is alreade voided, in your shoes, I will get a used new motor of the ones they have there in that link, and have it installed, or better open that one, and make the mechanic rebuild it, in case it is absolutelly needed, there are a lot of places that will sell you parts for it, even the same dealer...it will be a lot cheaper to get the parts that are damaged that pay 10K for a brand new engine...
