lug nut torque and cladding

Recommended Posts

hello all, newbie here!  just bought a 2024 Edge.  I have a question regarding the lug nut torque of 162 ft-lbs... really?  why would you need that much?  are you guys really torquing the lug nuts that much? It seems to me that would increase the risk of warped rotors?

and also, mine appear to have the SS clad lug nuts.  (I need to take one off to validate).  It seems to me that 162 ft-lbs would destroy the cladding in short order.   We swapped out clad lug nuts for solid steel lug nuts on two mustanges when the cladding starting giving issues... and we were only doing 90 ft-lbs !!!

would like to hear the comments the fellow edge owners please before I begin rotating the tires..   thanks

I don't use a torque wrench on the lug nuts, so can't comment on that question.

Within the first 15K miles of my Sports life the Ford dealership damaged the aluminum cladding on the lug nuts due to the use of impact wrenches for removing and installing them - they gave me a complete new set - 125K miles and they're still in "as new" condition.

Recently had tires installed at Costco - added clear instructions to the job card that no impact wrench be used - I watched and they didn't use impacts.

Where are you getting the 162 ft/lb number from?  Your User Manual?

Mine originally stated 150 ft/lbs which I can install & remove by hand, BUT it seems way too high.

What I ultimately found out is that the 150 ft/lb value was for trucks, not cars.

I now torque to 100 ft/lbs.  Haven't had a wheel come off yet.
