PJFW8
After driving my brother's '11 Edge and every '11 Edge on the dealer's lot, it is clear that my '11 is much louder. It is also much louder than my '08 Edge. My former post complained of a rumble or harmonic, But after driving these other cars I note they produce the same sounds just at much lower and acceptable levels. It's not wind or road noise but low frequency engine, drivetrain and suspension noise. Luckily the dealer can hear it too. They have tried many fixes: remove and rebuild the fuel tank, replaced the tires with a different brand (helped suspension noise a little..did not affect other sources), Swapped 20" wheel/tire (Similar result as different tire), removed the subwoofer (possible harmonic...no help), removed spare tire, checked interior and exterior panels, heat shields, etc. Nothing works. They are calling the rep for help. WHY IS MY EDGE LOUDER THAT YOURS?
ThinLine
This issue is going to eat away at you and piss you off everytime you even think about driving. The noise will get louder....at least in your mind, and will end up absolutely hating an otherwise great vehicle. If you have the financial means to take a loss on trading it in on another '11......do it. Ford and your dealer will do absolutely nothing in terms of a replacement vehicle at no cost due to the issues you are having. If you have a good dealer, they may offer free routine maintenance for 5 years or free extended warranty after you take the hit. They are under no obligation to do these things but it would be nice. I appreciate your response. Your thoughts echo the advice I got from a retired zone rep. Has anyone had experience with Dynamat? For $200 - $300 I could have a car audio place dampen the doors and floors. If my problem is general loudness will this make a noticeable difference? any advice is appreciated. Waldo
Could be any one of a million things, but it's probably just one thing. Could be as simple as a missing grommet or plug somewhere. Could be a ground out in the exhaust. Could be a leak in the exhaust. Have they tried neutralizing the engine mounts and subframe? Could be that some part like a dash insulator, baffle or something was "missed". Ā Dynamat isn't going to do anything for you. Usually when you have an error state like this, you can't mask it. It's kind of like a leaky pipe. You might have a hundred joints that are perfect, but if just one of them is bad, you're still getting wet. The dealer is willing to keep looking and would install the Dynamat . They agree my car is unusually loud. What is odd is that it is only a particular low frequency that is loud. It is otherwise quiet! I will look for a missing plug or grommet.

Ā Missing grommets usually result in high frequency noise, low frequency is more likely a ground out. I'd focus on neutralizing the engine mounts and subframe. He has an '11 Edge SEL which is very quiet.
Fingernip
If it seems just like the same noise but louder do you think maybe it could be something as simple as missing insulation somewhere?

Ā Dynamite is a waste of money. In all of my previous cars I've used a product called quiet car. Www.quietcar.net. Fantastic spray on visco elastic that takes vibration energy (noise) and turns it into low level heat. I've used this with great success. It's worth buying the gun and using a compressor. When I sprayed this into my 2005 Escape, it was quieter than my dads Lexus RX300. Plus the weight in dynamite that you would need to equal the noise canceling of this stuff is beyond compare. Read up on it, try it, you won't be disappointed. Edited May 22, 2011 by Edgieguy
PJFW8
If it seems just like the same noise but louder do you think maybe it could be something as simple as missing insulation somewhere? My guess is that you are right. I assumed my dealer checked that. It's been in 7 days trying to find the cause. My car was built around the time Ford modified the roof structure in February. I wonder if they missed something on my car during the transition. Tapping the roof does not reveal any unusual sound.
