Ecoboost Fuel Effienciency

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about purchasing a AWD/Ecoboost but am concerned about conflicting owner's reports about fuel effeciency. Some Edge drivers claim 24-25 Hwy while others get far less. I presently drive an 02 Jeep Liberty and its best Hwy is about 21. I just got to do better than the latter. Amy comments out there?

You may know this already, but you can’t get an Edge AWD with the Ecoboost engine; AWDs are equipped with the V6, only.

Check out fuelly.com for some real world mpg results on the 2011 Edge FWD/AWD/SPORT.

I haven’t done enough highway driving to comment on my AWDs highway performance.

Having the V6...I cannot fully answer your question...but coming from a Liberty myself, I can tell you that the V6 mileage is only marginally better all around. I was averaging 18MPG in mixed driving with the KJ, but I'm only hitting upper 18's to 19 in the Edge. It's pretty far off from the 21-25 that it had listed on the window sticker. I would assume a similar drop in numbers for the Eco model.

Good luck with your decision.

I have a 2011 Edge awd v6 and an Explored Ecoboost with 2,600 miles. Road tests on both report that the payback for the Ecoboost (a $995 option) is about 3 years. On recent 1,500 mile trips my Edge got ~23 mpg (summer gas) while the Explorer got ~25 mpg (winter gas). The Explorer is larger and heavier than the Edge, so an Ecoboost Edge should do at least as well. Both engines are excellent, but a couple of mpg and longer range are a free bonus if you keep your vehicle 3 or more years. The real question is if you can live without all wheel drive. If you can, test drive an Ecoboost!

I opted for the ecoboost option, which is totally awesome. We have only had it 3 days though. We have allready seen 32 mpg on the highway and its not even broke in yet. I did alot of research before buying the ecoboost motor and ive read alot of info of people stating upwards of 36 on the highway with the ecoboost motor. After seeing 32 mpg yesterday im a believer! Ecoboost all the way!!!!!!

I was seeing in the low 40's today with no a/c, flat road, and cruise set at 60. Averaged about 35 for the highway part of the trip. Have about 3500 miles on it so far. Haven't been super impressed so far, but today was a nice surprise. Hopefully it keeps getting better on average.

Maybe better MPG with the eco boost but turbos require high maintenance $$$ and can be expensive to repair if or when they fail after the warranty runs out.

Just me but not a fan...just sayin...

Dude - it's not the 1980s any more. Ecoboost engines don't require any more maintenance than NA engines and they're designed to last 150K miles minimum just like all other engines.

After the first 1500 miles, I am averaging 28mpg on ecoboost. Mixed driving, although more heavily weighted towards highway. Ecoboost makes sense if do not need towing capacity, do not need awd and plan on keeping veh >=3 yrs. I would also suspect the resale value may be positively impacted with the ecoboost - due to rising fuel prices. Plus, it is smooth as silk.

I know I'm late again on this but I wanted to add:

I'd agree on the Ecoboost...I purchased one. I bought it for the long range, highway mileage...close to 28-30mpg. Mine has 1150 miles on it and on a 150 mile round trip a couple weeks ago I got 28mpg...90% highway.

I'm leaving on a 2800 mile round trip in 11 days and am guessing it'll be about the same...95% highway mileage.

I don't need it for towing or AWD. I drive a 2008 Explorer 4x4 for work and have a 1999 Ford F-150 beater if it gets bad with snow here in MN.

Also..and this is my personal opinion/observation: Most factory turbo's are de-tuned...meaning they could actually pull a much higher PSI than what they are actually tuned at.

I run a 13.5 PSI Eaton M112 supercharger on my 2004 Mercury Marauder and thats about maxed out.... but it was originally tuned for about 8lbs. I had a smaller pulley installed (for more PSI) but it

required a new tune.

The 2.0 Ecoboost could probably put out much more but to get more life out of the engine its de-tuned to put out only 240hp/270lbs of torque. This way it lasts longer...less stress on the engine overall.

Again..that last part is personal opinion... :)
