Today I changed engine oil, oil filter, and PTU oil at 5,200 mi.
The PTU oil change was real easy with the drain fitted on these later models.
As can be seen in the photo, the oil blacken the paper towel and there was a few filling attached to the drain plug magnet.
I used Royal Purple 75-140 synthetic, and will most likely change it every 10 ~ 15K
Today I did another lube service at 15K miles - the 10K mile service was done by Ford - I plan to have Ford do alternate services.
The Royal purple that came out the PTU still looks good and the magnetic drain plug was clean after 10K miles.
It doesn't take much to do the PTU lube service so I'll stick to a 10 ~ 15K mile interval.
Also pleased to report that the engine is now 100% dry - no more oil leaks since the solenoid was replaced by Ford.

It does seems extreme, but the guy has a known business reputation to maintain, and would be a fool to go on youtube and lie.
He is taking the word of one of his clients, its not a trial that he conducted himself under controlled conditions.
If this was really plausible, the tire manufacturers would have got onto it as well - you could counter that argument with a comment that they want to sell more tires, but on the other hand they would outsell their competitors if they advertised that kind of mileage with good performance.
It's like all the gimmicks that claim to save 10 to 20% on fuel consumption - the competition between manufacturers is tight and some have even paid penalties for overstating their efficiency figures, so they'd have been all over those gimmicks if they were for real .

i just wana know if ptu units having built in drain plug and refill plug?because i dont want waste money to go small garage to refill the fluid and suddenly they will tell me they can refill cuz there is no drain plug.or i should go the ford service center itself.
thanks for your reply..
I've read that the Middle East versions do in fact have a drain plug on the PTU, so best you crawl under and take a look.

I've never heard of that stuff before… What is it exactly?…a cleaner, a sealer? Also who sells it?
Claude.
I've only started using about a year ago and very happy with it.
I'm not buying the extended mileage on the tires - if that was possible, it would be at a major sacrifice of grip, particularly in the wet.

Mobil-1 5W30 every 5K miles which is overkill seeing as my driving is light, Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor triggers around 10K and the oil is good for 15-20K miles.

@1004ron
Did you find that the re-circulation was the cause of the "damp" smell?
I'm pretty sure it was, because it took only a couple of days with it turned off for the smell to go.
I did a search on why it auto kicks off recirc mode, and a few sites cited the damp smell as the reason.

Fordpass and the SYNC3 "VHR" worked fine for me when I tested it out a while back.
You have to have FordPass app on your phone, plug your phone in via USB and run the app on your phone. I believe there is also some permission settings under the mobile apps setting on SYNC3 that also have to be set up. Most people have found this to be a waste of time to set all of this up.
Ford's links say that Sync Connect is required and not available on our model - I'd appreciate it if you gave it a try on your Edge and report back if it works.
-
My car was only a few weeks old and I started to get the damp smell, and realized that it was my extended use of the recirc button - it will auto switch off recirc and I'd turn it back on immediately.
I seldom use the recirc now and its all good now.
I realize that the chances are slim that this is your issue seeing as it only came up after you'd owned the car for some time.

VHR, With Sync3 you are suppose to be able to get and schedule a VHR by your cell phone using the FordPass app. If you sign in to owner.ford.com and sign up your vehicle you can then get instructions there on how to do it. Select the "Service & Maintenance" section in the ford.owner.com site and then "vehicle health report", you will also need the FordPass app. on your cell phone.
Give it a try and report back if it works for you, but it doesn't on my 2017 Sport, and I haven't read of any other Edge Sync3 systems working.
Sync Connect will be making its debut on the 2017 Ford Escape. The 2017 Fusion will be the next model to receive the features before it moves on to other vehicles in the Ford lineup. Five years of complimentary Ford service are included with the Sync Connect system
If your vehicle is equipped with SYNC® Connect, once activated, you’ll be able to see your Vehicle Health Alerts & Vehicle Health Report.
If your vehicle is not equipped with SYNC Connect, connect your phone to SYNC AppLink and let the engine run for at least 60 seconds.
After you have connected your phone to SYNC AppLink and your vehicle has collected the data, please log out of your Owner account, log back in, and return to this page to access your vehicle’s most up-to-date Vehicle Health Alerts & Vehicle Health Report.
Having trouble connecting your phone to SYNC AppLink? Ensure your smartphone is compatible with SYNC.

No VHR with sync 3. It doesn’t have anything to do with adaptive cruise either.
You don’t have to keep the engine running. That’s just a precaution in case you have a weak battery.
Thanks for that.
Do you know what Ford's reason is for dumping VHR ?
Not knowing what the update involved, I started speculating that it could be the cause of the unusual behaviour of the adaptive cruise.
I'll definitely remember not to run the engine for the update next time.
-
When you update does it reset any of previous settings?
I did not find any settings changed and my iPhone was still paired.
Its poor that Ford offer no explanation of the update.
I have a fairly long drive on a winding farm type road to my place of work, and always use the adaptive cruise control, and on some of the curves it will decelerate a little, and today on the way home it felt very erratic when regulating the speed in some of the bends - could this be a result of the update?

Vehicle Health Report:
Does this work with Sync3 ?

JL1T-14G381-AJ
This software release is the latest update in our continued efforts to improve system performance, device connectivity, and the overall SYNC experience.
This software contains all previous enhancements, so there is no need to install any other updates. The installation of this update will take up to 60 minutes to complete. DO NOT remove your USB drive or turn off your vehicle. You must wait until Installation Complete is displayed on the center screen before removing your drive or turning your vehicle off.
While the update is loading, SYNC will not recognize your mobile phone or media device. Be sure your vehicle engine is running (not in accessory mode) throughout the entire installation process. Although your vehicle must be in park when you initiate the installation process, once the download process has begun, you may drive your vehicle.
Really, Ford couldn't figure out a way to do this without the engine running for up to 60 minutes !!!!

The space used on my USB stick was 1.61GB
Crazy that they specify 32GB - maybe the updates that include NAV maps need that size.
-
just installed it, don't see any difference. and couldn't find the release notes
I just updated mine using a USB stick, which I think is a better method.
I can't find the release notes, and cannot see any obvious difference.
How does Ford do the Navigation Map updates? - I'm in a new subdivision and my street isn't on the Sync Nav maps yet.
-
Has anyone experienced tramlining? Under what conditions did it occur? What did you do to solve the problem?
Have you?

Try calling the SYNC support team (Monday-Saturday, 8:30am-8:00pm EST).
United States: 1-800-521-4140.
Canada: 1-800-387-9333.
Thanks, I'll call them on Monday as the automated recording advised that they're only available Mon-Fri.
When it doesn't actually make a call to "0", I get a message that it could not establish a phone call.
-
Apologies if this has been covered - a search revealed nothing.
This problem comes and goes, and hasn't made an appearance for a few weeks, and then out of the blue its back.
Often when I turn on the car it attempts to make a call and the voice advises to call 911 if this is an emergency, and if I look at the dialled numbers on my phone it show a solitary "0" in the "recents".
Also, occasionally when turning on the car the radio goes silent and then a notice appears that it could not connect to my phone, and when closing the message the phone shows connected, and is able to make handsfree calls.
2017 Ford Edge Sport Sync 3 with iPhone 7.
PS. I see another Android user reporting the same.

Either way, it was a constant result measured over 6 years of track use I am certainly convinced. To each their own
Redline is most certainly one of the top lubricant brands, but your coolant or oil temperature observations aren't really a measure of the oils performance.
-
The temperature gauge underneath the tachometer in the BMW. I assumed it was water... maybe it was oil. Either way, it ran cooler. Hey, I am just the driver lol...
EDIT:
Yeah, lol definitely oil. Here is a pic:
Ran around 240-250 unless at track, would get up near 260. After Redline, Never got above about 248 even at the track. Normal driving it stayed down around 240.
The automatic control of the coolant will also have a greater impact on the oil temperature than the anti-frication properties of the oil, so its more likely some other influence such as ambient temperature that you noticed.
Redline products are good, but in my opinion you're using the wrong thing to gage its performance.
-
water/coolant
The coolant temperature is regulated by the thermostat, so not representative of the anti-friction properties of the oil.

I previously owned a Nissan 350z and then a BMW 335i. in the 350z I started using Mobil 1 full sythetic but I noticed after a while it was leaving black exhaust residue on the back of my car. I also noticed temps weren't any different from the stock oil. I changed over to Redline and the black crap stopped and average track temperatures dropped by about 5 degrees. In the 335i, same results when switching from the BMW stock Euro-Castrol blend over to Redline oil. 5-10 degrees cooler at the track. I later added Redline water-wetter to the radiator and dropped another 3-5 degrees.
Redline is the real deal. It is ether-based and seems to work much better than newer type synthetics for keeping temperatures cool. Usually runs about 12-14 dollars per quart... I do plan to use it in this 2.7EB as well: engine oil, radiator additive, transmission fluid if applicable (my 1st automatic lol) , and differential fluid. The 335i also had a top mounted open-element filter, with o-rings, and for comparison I never found anywhere but the dealer to buy them. OEM, yep, but they worked great! FYI I never had issues with O2 sensors, etc. using Redline and the 335i was also a DI TT engine that I am sure is just as advanced if not more so...
What temperature indication were you referring to above?

UPDATE on PTU that was replaced 2 days ago. I got about 20 miles before the new PTU started leaking trans fluid in the garage. Leaking much more than it was when I took it in the first time to be replaced (98,000 miles). Just got back from dealer and looked at it on the rack. Fluid is leaking from the seal to the half shaft.
What is the problem with these PTU parts?
more to follow I am sure......
Sounds like you got a poorly refurbished one.

Flood control is enabled. Please wait at least 4 seconds before attempting to search again
tried a forum search for "GPS" and that came up with nothing, so for the second search attempt I use "Navigation" and get the above notice.
Really, two successive searches is flagged as a "Flood", LOL.
