  1. Hi All,

I replaced the fluid on my 2017 Sport. 22 oz came out of the PTU! Double the capacity stated in the user manual. I filled with OEM synthetic and it took 22 oz as well. The change was done at 7500 miles, sort of early for this, but since crawling under for the oil change, it was an easy change to do. The fluid was liquid, and dirty. The drain plug has a magnet, and had typical shavings on it.

Does anyone know if there was a design change in 2017? Btw the fill and drain plugs are Torx 50. However the T50 felt a little loose but worked. The torque spec I found was 33 ftLbs. While I did torque it to that, that did feel pretty tight. The seal is metal to metal, no o-ring or crush washer, so perhaps that tight makes sense.

That's what mine held, and only that you mentioned the manual I took a look and it states the capacity as 11.8 oz which is clearly incorrect - very odd.

  2.

    Motorcraft doesn't market their oil

How do you think the retailers get hold of it then, and does that really matter seeing as its freely available across the country?

    Did you see this?

    Not sure what's your point.

Doesn't mention that they add it to Motocraft.

According to ConocoPhillips, Guardol ECT and Kendall Super-D XA reformulated with the new additive improves engine-wear and bearing-corrosion protection and increases oxidation stability, with no tradeoffs in other performance advantages.

The company explained that the liquid titanium additive chemically binds with engine parts to reduce wear and extend engine life. Not available as an aftermarket additive, the liquid titanium is completely soluble in the lubricant and contains no solids or material in suspension.

ConocoPhillips has put the oil through extensive field trials with several fleets to gain “proof of performance,” Reggie Dias, director of commercial product, told FleetOwner. “We wanted to corroborate the enhanced wear protection and extended drain capabilities [of the oil in fleet service.”

  3. Congratulations. You just went to all of this trouble to test the same oil in different bottles. Conoco-Phillips makes both Motorcraft and Kendall motor oils.

Honestly, just use Mobil 1. Better oil, available at Wal-Mart for $23/jug, $12/jug rebates twice a year.

You keep using Mobil-1, but you could be a little more courteous to other forum members.

The Kendall has specific additive which is lacking in the Motorcraft.

Titanium oxide nanoparticles as additives in engine oil

This research study investigates the tribological behaviour of titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles as additives in mineral based multi-grade engine oil. All tests were performed under variable load and varying concentrations of nanoparticles in lubricating oil. The friction and wear experiments were performed using pin-on-disc tribotester. This study shows that mixing of TiO2 nanoparticles in engine oil significantly reduces the friction and wear rate and hence improves the lubricating properties of engine oil. The dispersion analysis of TiO2 nanoparticles in lubricating oil using UV spectrometer confirms that TiO2 nanoparticles possess good stability and solubility in the lubricant and improve the lubricating properties of the engine oil.

  4. I've never had a problem with factory audio, but the Sony system is by far the worst I've ever heard. I shouldn't have to replace the sound system in a $35,000+ vehicle to get something listanble.

Same response to your multiple posts on the same subject, Sounds like you have a defective product which should still be under warranty, so return the vehicle as you plan, or get it repaired under warranty - by no means is what you describe the norm.

  5. My iPhone 7 works great with my cordless headphones. However, it sounds terrible in my 2016 Edge with the Sony sound system. That problem is on Sony, not the phone. I tried it in a 2018 Honda CRV, and it sounded perfect.

As mentioned in your other posts on the same subject, Sounds like you have a defective product which should still be under warranty, so return the vehicle as you plan, or get it repaired under warranty - by no means is what you describe the norm.

  6. From what I've read in other forums, Sony put a different amp in after the 2011 or 12 year. If you have the part #, you can find a used on on eBay, or maybe through a junk yard. People have also said to disconnect the center speaker to make it sound better. The center speaker is supposedly mono, and that is all I seem to hear. The bass thumps regardless of how I set it, and sounds separated from the rest of the mix. I just bought a used 2016 Edge Titanium, and had I listened a little better wouldn't have bought the car. My stock radio in my 2011 Honda Accord was much better. Everything sounds muddy. The sound of the blue tooth is so bad that calls or driving directions are unlistenable. Every time a different song comes on through my iPhone there is a loud "pop" at the beginning of each song. I do a lot of traveling so a listenable radio is a must. This is the worst stereo I've ever heard. The dealer ship has a 7 day like it or return it, and I hate to say I will be returning the Edge due to to the poor audio system.

Sounds like you have a defective product which should still be under warranty, so return the vehicle as you plan, or get it repaired under warranty - by no means is what you describe the norm.

  7. Here's an interesting article on using premium (doesn't mean top tier gas)

Turns out 'recommended' Premium gas doesn't do much

In many cars and SUVs, Premium gasoline is "recommended," but not "required." Engineers at AAA set out to see whether using Premium gas instead of Regular really makes a difference in these cars.

On average, the vehicles got 2.7% better fuel economy when running Premium gas. But that's just an average. The results varied from a 7.1% improvement in the big Escalade SUV to a 1% decrease in fuel economy in the small Audi A3.

AAA also looked at horsepower output. On average, vehicles produced 1.4% more horsepower using Premium. It made the biggest difference in the V8-powered Mustang GT, which generated 3.2% more power using Premium. But the Jeep Renegade actually produced slightly less power when running on Premium.

Enough for me to stick with top tier premium - Costco is convenient for me, so I almost exclusively use their fuel, which is typically 20 to 30 cents cheaper.

  8. Welp Im back with the battery drawing issue. I let my edge sit for a week and dead battery. Back in November I put a brand new interstate battery in it. I pulled the battery brought it inside popped the caps and two of the cells were froze. Called interstate and they told me this was due to the battery discharging. Something is coming on intermittently while the vehicle sits. The past two weeks have been super cold where I live. Highs in the mid 20s. I will get to the bottom of this. Just got to have to do some investigating.

Good luck finding the parasitic drain, because it takes just one deep discharge to ruin a lead acid battery.

The place where you bought the Interstate should still give you a free replacement regardless.

Costco has the best deal on Interstate batteries these days, lowest price ans longest warranty at 42 months free replacement.

  9. This is from my manual:

    E161513
Your vehicle is designed to operate on
regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum
pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
Some fuel stations, particularly those in
high altitude areas, offer fuels posted as
regular unleaded gasoline with an octane
rating below 87. We do not recommend
    these fuels.
For best overall vehicle and engine
performance, premium fuel with an octane
rating of 91 or higher is recommended.
    The
performance gained by using premium fuel
is most noticeable in hot weather as well
as other conditions, for example when
towing a trailer. See Towing (page 230).

  10. My 2017 Sport that I bought in March 2017 had the drivers side airbag and controller replaced at in Aug 2017 - could have had it done earlier, but chose to wait until I took it in for service.

    • Airbag computer/module replaced
    • Left airbag assembly replaced
  11. I'm quite happy with my Sports brakes and plan on sticking with the OEM Motorcraft pads, unless others here convince me that there's better alternatives available.

I searched my owners handbook but cant find the Motocraft brake pad part numbers - can someone confirm these for me please.

  12. I just got a 2017 fusion Sport which has the same engine. Automakers originally used these cartridge oil filters way back in the day. GM switched to these for their Ecotec engines in the early 2000s and I believe VW Audi used them earlier as well. Ford just recently switched over. It's a lot cleaner, but not less expensive. AC Delco PF457G is like 9 bux at Walmart and it is just a cartridge without o rings. FL500s is half that price and has the metal canister, adbv, etc...

I like the metal canister if its mounting orientation allows you to remove it without a major mess.

I buy OEM service parts from Amazon (Greenway Ford).

  13. Guys, sorry for coming back to you on this, but I'm still not 100% sure on what to get.

It appears that the switchback 7443 lights are what we should use, which is a dual light - now for my question, is the Sport really a dual light and is it the 7443 Standard connector?

I'll be going with the AO switching option - Amber On - Amber Off - Amber On.

Edit: Roots, I found your post where you mentioned the wiring modification to make the switchbacks work - could you give me a little more detail on how you did that?

If the original globe is a single filament, how does it switch from low power to high power when the turn signals are on, and how would an LED work?

  14. water/antifreeze in the oil is almost always a head gasket. if they drained the antifreeze and didn't fill it then i'd say they are liable. if all they did was the belt, i don't see it being related. if it overheated it could have very well blown the head gasket.

weird that you have no batter power though. almost like the alternator wasn't working either.. which is belt driven. slippage in the belt? like they put the wrong size on? strange series of events

True in most cases, but not with this engine.

The Ford 3.5 Duratec has an internal water pump that upon failure may and can allow coolant to leak into the oil sump/pan filling it with coolant. This coolant mix into the oil decrease lubrication to the internal engine parts and subsequently complete engine failure.

If hey forgot to put coolant in the engine, the coolant pump mechanical seal could be damaged.

Why would they need to drain the coolant to replace the serpentine belt?

  15. I am switching to Mobil One full synthetic @ my next change, now that I've gone over 10k miles. I'm going away from the Motorcraft blended oil. I've used Mobil 1 oil in my vehicles almost exclusively for the last 20 years, IMO the best engine oil. The problem is that I doubt I can get the dealership to put it in, so I may have to do it myself. Has anyone had success getting their dealership to use something other than Motorcraft oil if requested, or even provided for them to put in?

My local dealership uses oil I supply, Mobil-1, when doing "The Works" for $39 and deduct a small amount for the oil that they would have supplied.

  16. if you buy the cheap foglight shrouds/fogs on ebay/amazon that are all over the place for the Edge, just know, our North American Edge lacks the bracketry inside the bumper and it will be a full custom job. I have only upgraded my turn signals to LED and turned off the hyper blink via Forscan. I see no need to upgrade a bulb I have never turned on.

    Nick,

I'm keen to change the front turn signals to LED - please let me know which globes and how to go about turning off the hyper flash in Forscan.

I still need to buy a connector/communication device for Forscan.
