  1. I have used a Hi-Polymer eraser by Pentel to remove the wax on the black plastic.

I tried that, but I suspect mine is too tough for that due to the length of time its had to bake on.

I used Goo Off (like Goo Gone) with a magic eraser and it worked the best of all, finished off with Ultimate Black and it still looking good since a day after your post.

I use turtle wax ice,can be put in all the parts, even the plastic, works great I think.

Thanks, I'll be giving that a try.

    Rear Axle and PTU Maintenance

The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) and rear axle (AWD only) in your vehicle does not require any normal scheduled maintenance, unless the vehicle has experienced extended periods of extreme or severe duty cycle driving or both PTU and the axle has been submerged in water. Checking the PTU and rear axle fluid is not necessary unless the unit shows signs of leakage. Contact an authorized dealer for service.

So for most owners in the US Ford considers the PTU lubed for life.

  3. the Service Advisor and the Service Manager both told me that the "new" leak was actually just residual transmission fluid from when the 1st PTU had blown out the upper valve. They said the old transmission fluid collected inside the lower transmission mount, and the old fluid was dripping out of that. .

Does your PTU use transmission oil or gear oil?

  4. I just picked up my 2013 Edge LTD AWD from the dealer. They changed the PTU last week, and after just 37 miles on the new PTU I noticed it was leaking again from the same spot. I brought it back today, and the Service Advisor and the Service Manager both told me that the "new" leak was actually just residual transmission fluid from when the 1st PTU had blown out the upper valve. They said the old transmission fluid collected inside the lower transmission mount, and the old fluid was dripping out of that. The repair ticket says they removed the lower mount and drained the residual fluid out of it, cleaned it, and then let the vehicle run on the lift for about 45 minutes. They checked again for fluid leaks and saw nothing, and they assured me there will be no more drips now. They're the "experts" and I'm hoping they are right, but my gut tells me I'll be back there again next week.

My gut also tells me you'll be back - is it a warranty repair, and if so can't you take it to another dealer?

  5. I have AWD, had the PTU replaced last year under extended warranty. Also have the lubricant changed by local dealer every 30k. (Although I haven't changed it since it was replaced).

If yours failed doing 30K oil change intervals I need to consider doing mine every 15K.

I wonder what the current models failure rate actually is, and if there's any stats to confirm that oil changes are really effective in avoiding failures vs Ford's "filled for life".

  6. I just got my 2013 Edge LTD AWD back from the dealer after having the PTU replaced. The service manager said it was blowing gear oil out the top valve. If anyone is interested, they replaced it with a PTU Part Number AT4Z7251G. They also replaced a gasket 7T4Z9450AA and a seal 7T4Z 5F263AA. The work was covered under my Extended Service Plan, but I had to pay the $100 plan deductible. I hope this PTU holds up, but after reading through these posts I'm not very optimistic.

The service manager said that they remedied the situation with a redesigned PTU on the 2nd Generation models, but only on the V6 AWDs. He says they haven't seen any problems at all with PTUs on the 2nd Generation models, although it's still early in the going for problems to arise.

I'm still thinking about buying a 2018 Edge Titanium AWD, but my enthusiasm level is a lot lower after experiencing a major component failure at just 47,000 miles on a car that's been well maintained and driven with TLC.

Change the PTU oil every 30K miles or less and you're unlikely to have issues.

  7. Cooling fans... I believe that there's a TSB on the issue

Thanks, that got me searching for the TSB and found this:

    TSB #SSM 45936 NHTSA ID #10091422

Summary: SOME 2015-2016 EDGE AND 2016 MKX VEHICLES BUILT ON OR BEFORE 6/11/2016 MAY EXHIBIT A NOISE FROM THE ELECTRIC COOLING FANS, MOST NOTICEABLE RIGHT AFTER THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF AS THEY SPIN DOWN TO A STOP. IF THE NOISE CAN BE PINPOINTED TO T

    Can't find more detail.

  8. Occasionally when after parking and turning off the ignition I hear what sounds like a fan coasting down, with a metallic rattle.

It could be one of the cooling fans or one of the two turbo chargers - anyone else hear this, and if it is the turbos coasting down, should I be concerned or does this sound normal?

Got 22K miles on it - it can only be heard if your outside the car near the front.

  9. The corrosion on the brake rotors might be effecting the feel, or the brake fluid being hygroscopic has drawn moisture - if the brakes don't settle in soon to what they were before the storage, I'd get them checked out. Check rotors and test the brake fluid.

  10. For those that have updated to version 3.0 do you see any difference in performance from v2.3. My edge recently did an auto update from 2.2 to 2.3 and since then I experience screen lockups that last 20-30 seconds at random when switching between functions. Didn't have that before 2.3. Does 3.0 solve this? Are there any issues with V3.0? I have downloaded it onto a flash drive but have yet to install it.

I never had any such issues going to 2.3 and neither with 3.0
