2011 Edge Sport 22" slow leaking tires...decisions

So as others have stated the 22" in tires that seem to slow leak like crazy. I have been to the Ford dealer and they say that I have a bent rim because they can rotate the tire around and the the leak is in the same area. Besides that tire the other seem to leak more often then any other tires I have ever had and am getting fed up. I love my 22's but at what cost.

 

So here are my options that I have considered (with questions):

 

- try to find somewhere to machine the "bent rim". Not sure how much success people have had with that.

 

- buy a replacement rim so I don't have to keep refilling it every week

 

- ditch the 22's and move down to a set of 20's. This would also benefit me in the cost of upcoming tires (I am still on the originals). Not sure if I have to do any centering or anything for this?

 

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

More than 1 are leaking. The one is leaking pretty bad...filling up once a week (so annoying). And yes it is around the bead.

 

After reading some more I am wondering if it is a problem with the rims and not a bent rim. Others seem to have similar problems.

Have you had the updated TSB performed (not the original TSB) that adds the goo stuff following the rim cleaning but before the remount? It's been pretty effective on our issue (knock on wood!!) thought a PITA if you need to replace your tires anywhere other than Ford dealership.

I have not taken it in to Ford yet. I plan on doing that really soon. What is the updated TSB number?

 

As a side note I didn't know there was TSB for the tires and I took it to Ford Quick Lube and they struggled with stopping the leak but they "claimed" they got it and charged me the 20 bucks. This was the 2nd time I took it back too. They shouldn't have charged me anything if there was a TSB and fixed it right. I am taking it to the service department next time and they will get an earful.

A TSB does not mean no cost to repair. If you're out of the 3/36K b2b warranty then it's not covered regardless of whether there is a TSB or not. If they extend the warranty with the TSB or do a safety recall then it's no cost.

Vehicles: 2009-2011 Ford Edge and Mercury MKX

Condition: Corrosion and on the lip of 22-inch rims and whiskers/vents on the tire’s bead seat may cause the TPMS to illuminate.

Solution: Disassemble the rim and tire and clean the rim and tire bead seats with a maroon Scotch-Brite pad.

This is an update/replacement for TSB 11-05-16.

Hope that helps! (Sorry, I don't have a copy of the actual TSB or I'd of uploaded it here) The dealer can look it up by the number though and reference the original TSB too.

Solution: Disassemble the rim and tire and clean the rim and tire bead seats with a maroon Scotch-Brite pad.

As an FYI, our dealer performed the TSB on all 4 rims and tires just because they didn't want to chance any issues. (We had 1 frequently leaking and 1 other occasionally.) That dealer's service department is pretty solid (the local dealer we went to previously was HORRIBLE) so if you have a good relationship with your dealer it's worth asking to have all 4 done while you can.

Maybe the tires are compressing and pulling off the seal. Just a guess, but man am I annoyed. Considering I only have 600 miles left on my warranty. This sucks.

There might be rust on the wheels that needs to be properly sanded off before the tires are remounted. Either that, or the wheels should be replaced, maybe a smaller wheel to prevent recurrence? Hopefully you will get free Tire Care warranty or something similar to keep these costs from hitting your wallet.

First of all thank you very much for noticing this. Before I saw this I had already made the appointment with my local dealer (Mike Bass Ford) and worked with their Quick Lube manager Chris. I dropped the car off and it turns out only one of the 2 tires had a bead leak (the other one had a nail which I couldn't see). He once again fixed the rim with the bead leak and assured me that even though I would be out of warranty very shortly, it has been well documented and shouldn't be a problem going forward. If I do need to bring it again, we might have to find a more permanent solution. I will keep you in my back pocket if this happens again. Thanks

So all 4 tires have leaked since 2012 (it's a 2011 Sport). A year ago (April 2013) they did the TSB 12-6-2, which unfortunately was an update to the previous one where they would just replace the wheels. Now one of the wheels leaks again and in one-two days without driving it, is is completely FLAT! Nonetheless I have to pump the tire every single morning!! I took it into the dealer and they said I now have to contact corporate as they already did the TSB previously and now there is nothing they can do. I don't understand why they can'd do the TSB again or take pictures of the issue and send into Ford for me?? Do they expect me to take the tire off the wheel? Sounds like BS, so not sure what to do. Any thoughts? FordService can you help point me in the right direction? PLEASE HELP!

2013 edge. Was just told i have 3 leaking beads. Was just in the service quick lane the today before and was told all is good. Got home and less then 12 hours later i have 3 flats. I see this is happening to others. And this is not a warranty issue.

I can't understand how tires leaking because of faulty rims isn't a safety recall issue. BMW doesn't recall their wheels when they get cracks in the rims that cause the tires to leak. I guess installing the TPMS systems on their cars removes the responsibility for dangerous defective parts from them to you. Maybe the auto manufacturers should put warning lights on the dash to warn of too much humidity and your air bag may decapitate you.
