Remove rear drivers door to fix rust

I have a 2013 SEL and as clean as my machine is, Ford's lack of seam sealer has done it in. I have rust on the inside of the bottom of the door on the round part above the wheel. It's on the seam between the outer and inner skins about where your hip would be if sitting in the back.

Dealer wants to pull the door off, grind out any rust, chemically treat what they can't get out and then repaint and reassemble. All for a mere $450.00. I have extended warranty but not sure if it covers rust. I will have to check. Also have TriCare paint protection but that's just for acid rain, peeling paint, etc.

My question is this. Has anyone pulled a rear door off a 13 Edge? If it wasn't too difficult to do, I could just deliver the door and re-install myself when they are done.

Hello

I also have a 2013 Sel. When it was new I cleaned the bottom of all the doors and blew out with air compressor, let them thoroughly dry, I filled the seams with liquid car wax, let dry.

When I wash the car I rinse the inside bottom of doors. So far no sign of the ugly rust. I've done this on my past vehicles , it worked for me. Just have wax residue on inside of doors. You could probably rub it off but it doesn't bother me. Just my 2 cents worth. :)

Been reported here before on the 2013 models. Some were only 3 months old when the rust started to appear.

Here's backup on it being iron filings from manufacturing, guy used IronX to neutralize. http://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/11589-my-edge-is-rusting/

Been seen on the Escapes as well: http://www.fordescape.org/forum/exterior-interior/8081-rust-rear-door-lip.html

And on the 2013 Explorer:

My rust is on the curved part over the wheel well. I always spray down the inside bottom of the door at the car wash. I haven't seen any rust in the bottom corner yet but I'll keep an eye on that now.

On a side note, I took my Edge to the GM dealer (one of my co-workers knows someone there) and the guy that came out to look at my Edge thought it was new. I really must look after it well.

  • 2 months later...

I had the exact same spot have rust on my 2013 Edge Limited. Just bought it in July and didn't notice it until over a month later. Had a body shop clean it up and repaint it. Cost $400 cdn. I also had a tiny spot on the front drivers door just down near the bottom on the vertical lip. Nice to know I'm not the only one that has seen this. Might be something to watch out for on others. Really weird spot as it's sort of on a vertical and water shouldn't be sitting there. The body shop was able to clean it up without removing the door.
